A high odometer reading does not, by itself, mean a car is near the end of its useful life. But the available evidence does not support naming a verified current list of ten specific cars—or promising that any individual vehicle has thousands of trouble-free miles left. Consumer Reports’ June 2026 analysis identifies 12 models whose owners most often reported reaching 200,000 miles or more without a problem in the previous 12 months, but its accessible summary does not name the full lineup and cautions that results vary by model year. For a used-car shopper, the safest takeaway is to evaluate the particular year and vehicle, not buy on a badge or odometer reading alone.
Why this title cannot support a current list of ten specific cars
Consumer Reports’ 12 Long-Lasting Cars Proven to Get to 200,000 Miles and Beyond was updated June 9, 2026. Its summary says the analysis uses Consumer Reports member surveys to select models whose owners most often reported at least 200,000 miles and no problems in the prior 12 months. Honda and Toyota models are prominent, but the accessible summary does not give all 12 names. It also warns that reliability, road-test results, and other ratings can differ across model years.
That evidence does not establish an exact set of ten current recommendations. Nor does a model-level survey result guarantee the future of a specific used car. A well-maintained example of a model with favorable longevity evidence may be a better prospect than a neglected example of the same model; the individual car’s condition and history matter.
What the historical ten-car list actually tells you
A 2014 Consumer Reports article reported an iSeeCars study of listings for 30 million vehicles advertised during the preceding year. It compared model years 1981–2010 by the share of advertised examples that had passed 200,000 miles. Its ten models, in order, were:

This is a historical observation about vehicles advertised with high mileage, not a current ranking of reliable used cars. Consumer Reports explicitly cautioned that the study did not establish the cars’ present condition or their reliability over time. It should not be used as proof that any model year—or any example you are considering—will cover a particular number of additional miles.
How to judge whether a high-mileage car is worth buying
Compare the exact model year and configuration
Reliability evidence can change from one model year to another, and vehicles carrying the same name may differ in equipment and configuration. Check evidence for the specific year and version you are considering, along with its safety equipment and suitability for your needs. A model’s reputation is a starting point, not a substitute for checking the car.

Review more than one history source
Ask for the service records and review vehicle-history information from multiple sources. Consumer Reports recommends checking more than one history report because one source may omit information found in another. Look for a coherent record of ownership, maintenance, and reported events rather than treating a clean-looking report as proof that the car is sound.
Have the individual vehicle assessed
Arrange an assessment of the car’s actual condition before buying. Consider expected maintenance and repairs alongside the purchase price, and make sure the vehicle fits your practical needs for space, comfort, and use. An OBD-II code reader can be an optional diagnostic aid, but a scan alone cannot establish overall condition or predict remaining service life.

How maintenance affects the miles ahead
Consumer Reports recommends following the maintenance schedule in the vehicle’s owner’s manual, using the specified oil formulation, and addressing minor problems early. Service intervals and fluid requirements are vehicle-specific, so there is no universal oil or schedule that fits every car. As Consumer Reports chief mechanic John Ibbotson puts it, “It’s not rocket science. The better you take care of your car, the better it will take care of you.”
Some expensive maintenance can come due at or shortly after 100,000 miles, but that milestone is not an automatic end-of-life marker. Consumer Reports lead technician Mike Crossen notes that “most cars today can last a lot longer.” The relevant question for a buyer is what maintenance and repairs this particular vehicle needs now, and whether its records and condition support the cost of owning it.

A practical decision rule
- Use longevity data to shortlist model years, not to guarantee an individual car’s future.
- Verify the exact year and configuration; broad model reputations can conceal year-to-year differences.
- Check service records and more than one vehicle-history source.
- Get the car’s condition assessed and account for likely repair needs.
- Follow the owner’s manual maintenance schedule and specified fluids after purchase.
