No reliable figures in the available sources establish which 10 Harley-Davidson models retain value best, so a ranked “shockingly well” list would be misleading. Here are 10 models worth checking in valuation guides and local listings—not a proven resale ranking. A model name alone cannot predict what a specific motorcycle will sell for: year, trim, factory options, condition, mileage, maintenance, and location all matter.
10 Harley-Davidson models to check—not a resale ranking
J.D. Power’s Harley-Davidson valuation guide includes the following models in its year-and-model selection. That confirms they can be researched there; it does not show that they outperform other Harleys on resale value. Use the exact year and configuration when checking a bike.
-
Fat Boy
Check the specific model year and factory configuration in a valuation guide, then compare nearby listings for the same year and similar condition.
-
Heritage Classic
Compare like-for-like years and options. Differences in equipment can affect a guide’s valuation.

The ten models above are not a definitive shortlist of the best retainers. Apply the same checks to any Harley you are shopping for or selling; the available evidence does not justify excluding other models from a resale comparison.

Why a model name cannot tell you what a Harley is worth
J.D. Power’s Harley-Davidson valuation guide lets users select a year and model and notes that transmission, clutch, electronics, engine options, brakes, and sidecars can affect value. Harley-Davidson likewise cautions that mileage is only one factor. The relevant comparison is therefore a particular motorcycle against similar examples—not a model name against another model name.
- Year, trim, and factory options: Compare matching configurations wherever possible.
- Condition and history: Service records, storage, use, modifications, and damage help explain a price.
- Mileage: Interpret it in light of the motorcycle type and how it was used.
- Location and season: Local supply and demand can differ, and listings are geographically specific.
- Price type: Guide estimates, advertised asking prices, and completed sale prices are not interchangeable.
What counts as high mileage on a Harley-Davidson?
Harley-Davidson’s mileage guidance reports that J.D. Power estimates average motorcycle use at “3,000 miles per year,” while noting that the estimate varies by motorcycle type, rider, and location. That is context, not a pass-or-fail threshold for an individual bike.
The same guidance says a sport motorcycle or a dual-purpose motorcycle frequently ridden off pavement may be considered high mileage at 20,000 to 30,000 miles, while a touring motorcycle may not be considered high mileage until 50,000 to 60,000 miles. These ranges are broad guidance, not a guarantee of mechanical condition or value.
Harley-Davidson advises examining maintenance evidence, storage, and riding history. A well-maintained bike with higher mileage may be a better prospect than a low-mileage example showing neglect. Inspect the motorcycle and records rather than using the odometer alone to decide whether a price is fair.

How to estimate a Harley’s resale value
- Identify the bike precisely. Note its model year, model, trim, factory options, mileage, condition, and any modifications or damage.
- Check a valuation guide. Select the year and model in J.D. Power’s motorcycle valuation guide. Where coverage overlaps, compare it with Kelley Blue Book’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle values. Treat both as estimates, not guaranteed sale prices.
- Compare local listings. Use H-D1 used inventory to look for comparable model years in your area. Record advertised prices separately; listings show what sellers are asking, not necessarily what buyers pay.
- Adjust your comparison for the individual bike. Review service records, storage, use, modifications, and signs of damage alongside mileage and condition.
- Get a transaction-oriented estimate if needed. Harley-Davidson’s valuation flow asks for mileage and contact and location details. Read its estimate as an input for a sale or trade-in decision, not as proof of a final transaction price.
Kelley Blue Book’s cited Harley-Davidson values cover model years 1989 through 2024, so its listed coverage does not extend through 2026. J.D. Power’s guide includes 2026 models, but availability in that guide is not evidence of superior resale retention.
What current market context does—and does not—show
J.D. Power’s Q1 2026 Powersports Market Insights report says used motorcycle values continued to rise, with strong demand particularly for well-maintained units in the two- to four-year age range. This is broad motorcycle-market context. It does not identify Harley-Davidson models with the strongest resale performance or establish a model-by-model retention rate.
To substantiate a true top-ten ranking, comparisons would need to use the same valuation method and date, a clear baseline such as original MSRP, comparable model years and configurations, and consistent treatment of mileage, condition, geography, and sale versus asking prices. No numerical retention rate for ten Harley-Davidson models is established by the cited sources.
