The practical way to assess a used Harley is to compare the specific year and engine generation, inspect its records and check its VIN for open recalls.
What the reliability evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports’ 2015 survey covered more than 12,300 motorcycles from model years 2008–2014. It placed Harley-Davidson and Victory in the middle of the brands surveyed. That is historical, brand-level context; it does not establish which Harley-Davidson models or model years are more reliable than others. Consumer Reports’ 2015 motorcycle reliability report also estimated repair rates for four-year-old motorcycles without service contracts, adjusted for mileage over a 12-month period.
A separate finding from the same reporting is often easy to misread: 72% of surveyed Harley-Davidson owners said they would definitely buy the same bike again. Consumer Reports reported that in 2015 as an owner-satisfaction result, not a mechanical reliability rate or a model-specific statistic. Consumer Reports
Those sources do not provide comparable reliability scores for ten Harley-Davidson models. Naming ten winners would imply evidence that is not available here, so this guide does not present a fabricated top-ten list. Instead, use the following checks to decide whether a particular Harley is a sound candidate.

How to assess a Harley-Davidson model before buying
1. Pin down the exact year and engine generation
A model-family name alone is not enough to establish reliability: designs and components can differ across model years. Compare the exact year and engine generation of the motorcycle you are considering, and seek evidence tied to that specific combination. The sources cited here do not establish a model-history comparison or a most-reliable year for any Harley family.
2. Review records against the correct maintenance schedule
Ask for service records and receipts, then compare them with the schedule for that exact motorcycle. Harley-Davidson’s 2025 owner’s manual says owners are responsible for following the maintenance schedule at the specified mileage intervals; it recommends inspection and service before the first 1,000 miles (1,600 km), and says records and receipts should be retained and passed to later owners. Do not apply a single generic interval to every Harley. The 2026 owner’s manual says maintenance may need to be more frequent in severe conditions, including extreme temperatures, dusty environments, mountainous or rough roads, long storage, short trips, heavy stop-and-go traffic or poor fuel quality. Its maintenance schedule is specific to the motorcycle family. Harley-Davidson 2026 Owner’s Manual
3. Check recalls by VIN
Before purchase, enter the motorcycle’s VIN on Harley-Davidson’s U.S. recall page. The page’s database includes recall information beginning in July 1999 and directs users to NHTSA for recalls and technical service bulletins. A recall is a safety-campaign status, not a reliability rating; verify whether any applicable campaign has been completed.

4. Inspect condition and modifications
Have the actual motorcycle inspected, including its modifications, and consider how its use aligns with the maintenance demands in its own manual. The cited sources do not quantify how modifications affect failure rates, so treat them as things for an inspector to assess—not proof that a motorcycle is unreliable.
5. Confirm dealer support and any warranty terms
Harley-Davidson lists owner manuals, maintenance schedules, recall information, parts and authorized dealer service resources. It also advertises a factory-backed two-year warranty administered through its dealer network. Confirm the precise warranty terms and availability for the motorcycle and market you are considering; a listing of service resources does not establish that a particular used bike is covered. Which is the most reliable Harley model?
The evidence here cannot identify one. Consumer Reports’ cited survey reports brand-level results, not a model-by-model comparison, and its 72% figure measures owner willingness to buy the same bike again rather than mechanical reliability. For an individual purchase, documented maintenance, VIN-specific recall status, condition and a comparison tied to the exact year and engine generation provide more useful evidence than an unsupported model ranking.
What year Sportster is best for reliability?
No year can be named as the reliability leader from the sources cited here. To compare Sportsters, identify the exact year and engine generation, obtain its maintenance records and check the VIN for open recalls. The 2015 Consumer Reports findings do not break reliability down by Sportster year.
