Which full-size SUV gets the best gas mileage?
Among these ten 2026 models, the 2WD Chevrolet Tahoe with the 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel has the highest listed rating: 24 mpg combined. The 2WD diesel Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and GMC Yukon XL are each rated at 23 mpg combined. The next-highest entry is the 2WD Toyota Sequoia hybrid at 22 mpg.
The figures below are U.S. Department of Energy and EPA estimates from the 2026 Fuel Economy Guide. Each rating applies to the configuration shown; a model name alone does not tell you its fuel economy.

What stands out about the top-rated SUVs?
Chevrolet Tahoe: the group’s highest rating
The Tahoe’s 24 mpg combined rating belongs to its 2WD 3.0-liter diesel configuration. The guide lists the 4WD diesel Tahoe at 22 mpg combined, a two-MPG difference between the listed drivetrains. Buyers comparing trims should check that the engine and drivetrain match the rating they have in mind.
Suburban and Yukon models: 23 mpg with 2WD diesel
The 2WD diesel Suburban, Yukon, and longer Yukon XL each reach 23 mpg combined in the guide. Their 4WD diesel configurations are listed at 22 mpg combined. Toyota Sequoia: hybrid efficiency with substantial towing capacity
The 2WD Sequoia hybrid is rated at 22 mpg combined. Toyota describes its system as the i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid and advertises up to 9,500 pounds of towing capacity; that towing figure is a manufacturer specification, not an EPA fuel-economy measure. Expedition and Grand Wagoneer: 19 mpg in the listed 2WD versions

Armada and QX80: 18 mpg in the listed 2WD versions
The 2WD Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX80 each have an 18 mpg combined rating in the guide. Nissan specifies a twin-turbo V6 for the Armada; its engine description is separate from the EPA rating source. See Nissan Armada specifications.
Why drivetrain and engine change the comparison
These rankings are not simple model-to-model comparisons: the highest figures in this group come from specific 2WD diesel configurations, while the Sequoia’s 22 mpg rating comes from a hybrid powertrain. Four-wheel drive can also change a model’s rating. For example, the guide lists the diesel Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, and Yukon XL at 22 mpg combined with 4WD, versus 23 or 24 mpg in their 2WD diesel configurations. The 4WD Expedition is listed at 18 mpg combined, compared with 19 mpg for 2WD.

Before comparing two listings, match the engine and drivetrain and check the city, highway, and combined figures for the exact version. The EPA and DOE fuel-economy site provides a way to check vehicle-specific ratings. For a larger SUV, also weigh the passenger and cargo space you need; a higher combined MPG figure is only one part of whether a particular configuration fits your use.
