Several genuinely quick 1990s cars remain attainable in the U.S. market, but “dirt cheap” describes their purchase prices only in a relative sense. Road & Track’s 2026 estimates put a C5 Corvette at $10,000–$20,000 and a Porsche Boxster at $5,000–$20,000; condition, mileage, originality, trim and maintenance needs can change the real cost substantially. These are editorial estimates and rounded benchmarks, not guaranteed asking prices or a single market-wide valuation study.
The list below focuses on models with a credible performance case and a comparatively accessible entry point. Check the exact variant: a turbocharged 300ZX, a 3000GT VR-4 and an ordinary version of either model are not interchangeable buys.
How to read these 2026 prices
Unless otherwise noted, ranges are Road & Track editorial estimates updated in 2026. WC Shipping’s September 2026 figures are rounded U.S. benchmarks attributed to Classic.com and Hagerty, rather than direct valuation-series data in the article reporting them. Neither type of figure guarantees a car’s asking or sale price. Mileage, originality, modifications, title history, trim and condition can move an individual car well beyond a broad range.
Use the figures to identify models worth investigating, not to assume a low-priced listing is a sound example. A vehicle inspection and a review of its history matter especially when age, specialized systems or a performance variant are involved.

10 fast 1990s cars with relatively low entry prices
1. Chevrolet Corvette C5 (1997–2004)
Price: Road & Track’s 2026 estimate is $10,000–$20,000, with about $15,000 described as a possible purchase point. The estimate covers the C5 generation, not a promise that a clean, ready-to-drive car will be available at the bottom of the range.
Why it’s fast: Road & Track cites a 350-hp V-8, good handling and a 175-mph top speed. That makes the C5 one of the clearest combinations here of performance and comparatively accessible pricing. Assess condition and history before treating an inexpensive example as a bargain.
2. Ford Mustang SVT Cobra (1993–2004; 1990s examples)
Price: Road & Track gives a $10,000–$30,000 estimate for the 1993–2004 SVT Cobra run. That span includes multiple model years and does not mean every car is a 1990s example or that the variants share one price.
Why it’s fast: The SVT Cobra is the performance-focused Mustang in this list. Be precise about year and version when comparing listings. The later supercharged “Terminator” Cobra belongs to the 2003–2004 part of the run and is not a 1990s car; its price should not be used as a proxy for 1990s examples.

3. Nissan 300ZX Z32, especially the Twin Turbo
Price: Road & Track’s 2026 range for the 300ZX is $15,000–$45,000. It says a very good car can be around $20,000 and decent examples can cost less, while warning that Twin Turbo versions in good condition cost considerably more. WC Shipping reported a rounded $28,000 benchmark for the 300ZX Twin Turbo in September 2026, attributed to Classic.com and Hagerty. These figures describe different scopes and methods; they are not interchangeable prices for every Z32.
Why it’s fast: Road & Track gives the Turbo Z 300 hp. Confirm that a listing is actually the turbo model before comparing it with naturally aspirated cars. Turbo specification, condition and originality all affect whether a low asking price represents value.
4. Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4
Price: Road & Track estimates $10,000–$25,000 for the 3000GT and says even an all-wheel-drive VR-4 can be found well under $20,000. WC Shipping’s September 2026 rounded benchmark for the VR-4 is about $25,000, attributed to Classic.com and Hagerty. The gap reflects different sources and price methods, and is a reason to verify current local listings rather than rely on one figure.
Why it’s fast: The VR-4 is the performance variant to seek out; the broad 3000GT range is not a VR-4 valuation. Its all-wheel drive and twin-turbo V-6 make it a technically ambitious choice. Check that its systems are present and functioning, and weigh the car’s condition and likely upkeep against its purchase price.

5. Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo (1991–1996)
Price: WC Shipping put the 1991–1996 Stealth R/T Twin Turbo benchmark at about $17,500 in September 2026, attributing its rounded figure to Classic.com and Hagerty. Treat this as a reported benchmark, not a fixed asking price.
Why it’s fast: The source describes the Stealth as the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4’s twin, with all-wheel drive and a twin-turbo V-6. It offers a less common alternative, but the same distinction applies: the figure is for the Twin Turbo, not every Stealth. Confirm trim, history and system condition before comparing it with other cars on the list.
6. Porsche Boxster (986, 1997–2004)
Price: Road & Track’s 2026 estimate is $5,000–$20,000 for the 986 Boxster; it notes that an S can sometimes be found under $15,000. Those are broad estimates, not assurance that a low-priced S—or any Boxster—is in good condition.
Why it’s fast: The Boxster S is the performance-focused variant to identify when that is the comparison you want to make. Road & Track flags quality issues in early cars. Have a prospective example assessed on its own merits rather than assuming the lowest purchase price is the lowest-cost route into ownership.

7. Toyota MR2 Turbo (SW20)
Price: Road & Track estimates $15,000–$35,000 for turbo versions and says examples can be found under $20,000, though they are becoming harder to find. The figures apply to the Turbo, not every SW20 MR2.
Why it’s fast: The turbo model is the relevant performance version for this list. Its increasingly limited availability means a sub-$20,000 figure should be treated as a possibility, not a dependable price for a well-preserved example. Verify the car’s specification and condition.
8. BMW 8-Series (E31)
Price: Road & Track’s 2026 estimate is $12,000–$30,000, and it says V-8 models can routinely be found below $15,000. V-12 and manual versions cost more. The publication specifically advises budgeting extra for maintenance, so a low purchase price alone is a poor measure of affordability.
Why it’s fast: The E31 is a fast grand tourer, not a lightweight sports car. Compare like with like: engine and transmission specification influence both price and the kind of ownership commitment involved.

9. BMW M3 (E36, 1995–1999 U.S. manual coupes)
Price: Road & Track calls the E36 a relative bargain compared with the older E30 M3 and gives an editorial range of $15,000–$25,000. Separately, WC Shipping reported an approximately $29,000 rounded benchmark for 1995–1999 U.S. manual coupes in September 2026, attributed to Classic.com and Hagerty. The estimates differ in source, date and scope; the higher benchmark is specifically for manual coupes, not all E36 M3s.
Why it’s fast: The M3 is the performance model, but body style, transmission, condition and originality matter when comparing prices. These figures do not establish a single market value for every E36 M3.
10. Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 (C4, 1990–1995)
Price: Road & Track’s 2026 estimate is $15,000–$35,000 and notes that some examples fall below $20,000. That lower figure should not be confused with the cost of buying and maintaining a sound example.
Why it’s fast: Road & Track highlights the ZR-1’s 32-valve, quad-cam V-8 and adaptive dampers. Its specialized engine and systems make the condition and functionality of a specific car central to the buying decision.

Quick Recap
How to decide whether a low price is a real bargain
- Confirm the exact model and trim. Make sure the listing is for the performance version you intend to buy: for example, a 300ZX Twin Turbo, 3000GT VR-4, Stealth R/T Twin Turbo or Boxster S. Do not apply a performance-trim price to a base model, or vice versa.
- Compare only similar examples. Match year, body style, transmission and specification where possible. The E36 M3 figures show why this matters: one estimate covers the model broadly, while another specifically benchmarks U.S. manual coupes.
- Check condition, mileage, originality and history. These factors can put a car well outside its model’s broad estimate. A low listing price is not evidence that the car is road-ready or unmodified in ways that suit your needs.
- Inspect the car before committing. Have a qualified mechanic assess the individual vehicle, including its performance systems and any model-specific complexity. The sources do not establish a comparable reliability or maintenance-cost ranking across these ten cars.
- Budget for ownership, not just purchase. Age-related needs can erase a purchase-price advantage. The E31 is explicitly flagged for additional maintenance budgeting; specialized systems on the VR-4 and ZR-1 also make inspection findings especially important.
- Check local listings and transaction context. The quoted figures are U.S.-market estimates and rounded benchmarks from 2026 sources. They are not live listings, guaranteed sale prices or a promise that the same price is available in another region.
