The Mercedes-Benz G-Class—better known to many as the G-Wagen—began as a practical off-road vehicle developed across national borders. Since its 1979 debut, it has kept a distinctive shape and serious off-road hardware, while the latest electric version adds a very different powertrain. Here are ten facts that explain how the G-Wagen got its character and what sets the electric G 580 apart.
1. The G-Wagen began as a joint project
In 1972, Daimler-Benz and Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch began working together on a vehicle for demanding on-road and off-road conditions. Mercedes-Benz says the intended customers included commercial and state users as well as private drivers. The G-Class began as a useful, broadly capable vehicle—not simply a luxury status symbol. Mercedes-Benz’s development timeline records the start of the collaboration.
2. It entered production in Graz in 1979
The 460-series G-Model was presented in 1979, and series production began in February that year. Mercedes-Benz says the vehicle was built from the outset at the Puch plant in Graz-Thondorf, Austria. In its 2019 history release, the company noted that Geländefahrzeug Gesellschaft, founded by the two partners in 1977, was responsible for the production process. The company timeline and its anniversary release document the launch.
3. The original came in five body styles and two wheelbases
The first 460-series G-Model was not a single fixed configuration. Mercedes-Benz’s historical timeline describes it as having a ladder-type frame and coil-sprung rigid axles, with a choice of two wheelbases and five body variants. Those are launch-era details, not a description of today’s G-Class range. Mercedes-Benz’s timeline preserves the distinction between the original model and later generations.

4. Its boxy shape had practical roots
The G-Wagen’s squared-off outline is memorable, but Mercedes-Benz’s account of its design points to function as well as style. Broad, smooth body surfaces were combined with geometry intended to suit off-road use: substantial height, relatively narrow width, and large approach and departure angles. Mercedes-Benz Design, under Bruno Sacco, defined the final styling. The shape was distinctive, but it also reflected the vehicle’s intended terrain. Mercedes-Benz’s 2019 history release describes the design approach.
5. A 280 GE won its category at the 1983 Paris-Dakar
In 1983, Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur won the passenger-car category of the Paris-Dakar Rally in a Mercedes-Benz 280 GE. That is an impressive rally result, but the category matters: Mercedes-Benz records it as a passenger-car-category win, not an overall victory. The official G-Class timeline gives the result and its wording.

6. Two differential locks became standard in 1985
Mercedes-Benz says two differential locks became standard equipment across the 460 series in 1985. Together with all-wheel drive and a ladder frame, locking differentials became part of the G-Class’s foundational off-road identity. A differential lock helps limit wheelspin when traction differs from one wheel to another; on uneven ground, that can help keep power going to wheels with grip. The company timeline dates the standard-equipment change, while Mercedes-Benz’s 500,000th-unit retrospective describes those enduring design traits.
7. Production reached 600,000 vehicles in August 2025
Mercedes-Benz announced that the 600,000th G-Class rolled off the production line in Graz on August 5, 2025. The milestone vehicle was an obsidian-black G 580 with EQ Technology. This is a dated production milestone, not a live count of how many G-Class vehicles have been built since then. Mercedes-Benz’s announcement identifies the vehicle and date.

8. The electric G 580 has four motors controlled individually
The G 580 with EQ Technology uses four electric motors positioned near the wheels, each controlled individually. Mercedes-Benz lists total output of up to 432 kW and torque of 1,164 Nm. These figures apply to the electric G 580; they should not be read as specifications for every G-Class model. Mercedes-Benz’s G 580 press materials give the powertrain details.
9. The electric G 580 keeps recognizable off-road hardware
Electric power did not mean abandoning the G-Class’s established chassis layout. Mercedes-Benz says the G 580 with EQ Technology retains a ladder frame, selectable LOW RANGE, independent front suspension, and a rigid rear axle. The company’s press materials list a 116 kWh battery and up to 473 km of WLTP range. WLTP is a standardized test cycle; the stated maximum is not a promise of the distance a driver will achieve in everyday conditions. The G 580 press kit provides the battery and range figures, and Mercedes-Benz’s technical information describes its off-road equipment.

Mercedes-Benz lists a maximum DC charging rate of 200 kW and a 32-minute DC charging time for the electric G 580 under the conditions specified in its technical-data table. The same maker-published data lists 620 litres of luggage capacity. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; charging time in practice depends on conditions such as the charger and battery state. Mercedes-Benz’s technical-data materials contain the charging and luggage figures.
