Lexus is Toyota’s premium vehicle brand, introduced in the United States in 1989 with the LS 400 as its launch-era flagship. Its history includes an early luxury hybrid, a 500-unit V10 supercar, and newer model-specific hybrid systems. Here are 10 useful facts, with the distinction between historical milestones and current concepts kept clear.
When did Lexus start?
1. Lexus was introduced in 1989
Toyota’s official history timeline dates Lexus’s introduction to 1989, alongside the establishment of U.S. dealerships and the launch of the LS 400. That is the U.S. launch context documented by Toyota; it should not be read as a claim that Lexus launched in every market at the same time. Toyota’s history timeline records those milestones.
2. The LS 400 was the launch-era flagship
The LS 400 was the flagship sedan associated with Lexus’s introduction. Toyota’s chronology places its launch in the same 1989 milestone as the brand’s U.S. introduction.
What was Lexus’s first hybrid?
3. The RX 400h arrived in 2005
Toyota identifies the RX 400h as the first Lexus hybrid, introduced in 2005. The milestone refers to Lexus’s first hybrid model, not the start of hybrid vehicles across Toyota’s broader brands. Toyota’s Form 20-F filings state the date and model.

What makes the Lexus LFA special?
4. The LFA was limited to 500 cars worldwide
Toyota announced the LFA in 2009 and specified a worldwide production run of 500 units. Its announcement gave a production period of December 2010 through December 2012. Toyota’s LFA announcement contains the production details.
5. Its original engine was a 4.8-liter V10
The original LFA used a 4.8-liter V10. Toyota’s announcement also highlighted Lexus-developed production technology for carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, an example of the engineering work associated with the car.

6. The LFA Concept is electric, but it remains a concept
On December 5, 2025, Toyota described the LFA Concept as a battery-electric sports-car concept developed alongside the GR GT and GR GT3. The announcement establishes its concept status and battery-electric powertrain; it does not establish a production commitment or launch date. Toyota’s December 2025 announcement calls it a “battery electric vehicle (BEV) sports car concept model.”
How do Lexus hybrid systems differ?
7. The LX 700h combines a twin-turbo V6 with a motor generator
Toyota announced the LX 700h in 2024 as a hybrid SUV. Its described parallel hybrid system combines a motor generator with a twin-turbo V6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Toyota’s LX 700h announcement describes the announced configuration.

8. The announced LX 700h design retains off-road hardware
Toyota said the LX 700h configuration preserves full-time four-wheel drive and a low-range transfer case. These are details of that announced model, not a general specification for Lexus hybrids.
9. Lexus hybrid approaches vary by model
The 2017 LC announcement describes a multi-stage hybrid system combining Lexus hybrid technology with variable gears, while the 2024 LX 700h announcement describes a parallel hybrid setup. These are distinct model-specific approaches rather than a single hybrid layout shared by every Lexus. Toyota’s LC announcement and LX 700h announcement describe their respective systems.

What should drivers know about Lexus safety features?
10. Toyota Safety Sense combines several active-safety functions
Toyota lists pre-collision support, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams among major Toyota Safety Sense functions. Exact availability and feature names can vary by Lexus model and market. These driver-assistance functions do not make a vehicle autonomous or remove the driver’s responsibility to drive attentively.
Toyota reported “More than 40.5 million equipped vehicles — Toyota Motor Corporation, July 2023.” This is a global deployment figure for Toyota Safety Sense-equipped vehicles across Toyota’s brands, not a Lexus-only count.
