What the 2024 cheapest-car ranking counted
Cars.com selected and ordered the vehicles by lowest base price in the United States as of April 2024, according to Fox Money’s October 16, 2024 account. The listed prices include destination charges and automatic transmissions. They exclude cash incentives, taxes, and fees. Why another 2024 list can show different prices
A separate TheStreet compilation, based on automaker websites and model information gathered by early June 2024, reported a different set of starting prices and put the Volkswagen Jetta in tenth place instead of the Toyota Corolla. It listed, in order, the Nissan Versa at $16,680, Mitsubishi Mirage at $16,695, Mitsubishi Mirage G4 at $17,795, Hyundai Venue at $19,900, Kia Forte at $19,990, Kia Soul at $20,190, Chevrolet Trax at $20,400, Nissan Sentra at $21,180, Nissan Kicks at $21,340, and Volkswagen Jetta at $21,345. The Versa price difference: ranking price versus Nissan MSRP
Nissan’s September 26, 2023 announcement gave the 2024 Versa S an MSRP of $16,130 with a five-speed manual or $17,800 with the Xtronic CVT. It listed the SV at $19,420 and SR at $20,140. Nissan said its $1,115 destination and handling charge was extra, and that MSRP excluded destination, applicable taxes, title, license, and options. The Cars.com-based ranking’s $19,200 Versa S figure uses a different basis: the ranking includes destination and assumes an automatic transmission, while Nissan’s announced MSRP separated destination and also quoted a manual version. The amounts therefore should not be treated as directly interchangeable or as a current dealer quote.

How to use this list when comparing cars
The ranking answers a narrow question—what models had the lowest listed base prices under its stated rules. It does not establish which car is the best value, most reliable, or cheapest to own. The list includes sedans, hatchbacks, and small SUVs, so compare the body style and equipment you need, as well as fuel economy and safety features.
What the Versa’s published equipment and fuel economy show
Nissan’s press kit says the 2024 Versa S included a 7-inch touchscreen and standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, rear automatic braking, and high-beam assist. Nissan rated specified Versa models with the Xtronic CVT at up to 32 mpg city, 40 highway, and 35 combined. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results. What to check before acting on an old price
- Confirm whether a quoted figure is MSRP, a list price with destination, or a dealer’s out-the-door offer.
- Ask for an itemized quote that accounts for destination, taxes, title, license, dealer fees, options, and any incentives for which you qualify.
- Verify local inventory and the exact trim and transmission. This ranking does not establish whether leftover 2024 vehicles are available now.
