10 Cars That Make the Most of a Six-Cylinder Engine

Ten very different cars—from a high-revving Honda NSX to a hybrid Ferrari 296 GTB—show how V6, straight-six, flat-six and VR6 engines can define a car.

These ten cars show why “six-cylinder” is not a single recipe. A high-revving V6 can define a mid-engine sports car, a straight-six can give a sedan its character, and a flat-six or unusual VR6 can shape a car’s engineering and identity. This is an editorial selection, not an objective ranking: the examples are chosen for how meaningfully their engines contribute to the whole car.

What makes a car make the most of a six-cylinder engine?

It takes more than a cylinder count or a large peak-power figure. The engine should matter to the car’s character, engineering, performance, packaging or usability. That can mean a distinctive rev range and induction sound, compact packaging, smooth power delivery, a notable motorsport lineage—or an unconventional solution to a particular car’s needs.

The layouts are different, too. A straight-six arranges its cylinders in one row; a V6 divides them between two banks; a flat-six places opposing banks horizontally. Volkswagen’s VR6 is a narrow-angle design that packages six cylinders in a way unlike a conventional V6 or an inline-six. Turbocharging and hybrid assistance further broaden what the format can do.

The order below is not a scorecard. Power and acceleration figures come from different years, markets and publications, so they are useful for describing individual cars, not for declaring a controlled-test winner.

Ten cars that put their six-cylinder engines to work

1. Honda NSX (NA1/NA2): a usable, high-revving mid-engine V6

The first-generation NSX made a V6 central to a sports car that was also intended to be usable day to day. Top Gear notes its forged pistons and titanium connecting rods, while Road & Track lists the 1991 Acura NSX’s 3.0-litre engine at 270 hp with an 8,000-rpm redline. Road & Track’s V6 overview provides that specific-year figure.

NA1 and NA2 cars are not one interchangeable specification: displacement and transmission choices differ by version. The important point is the pairing of a responsive, high-revving engine with a mid-engine layout and a car conceived for more than occasional track use.

2. Ford Falcon XR6 Sprint (2016): a turbo straight-six with Australian character

The XR6 Sprint was a vivid expression of Ford Australia’s Barra turbo straight-six. Top Gear reports 496 bhp on overboost for the 2016 Sprint and highlights the engine’s strength and simplicity. That is an overboost figure for this particular model, not a rating shared by every Barra-powered Falcon. Top Gear’s six-cylinder engine list covers the Sprint.

In a large sedan, the straight-six gives the Falcon a different kind of appeal from a compact, high-revving sports-car engine: plentiful turbocharged performance in a practical, familiar body style.

It fosters an appreciation for the ingenuity in today’s technology as well as the need for it in coming generations.

3. Alfa Romeo 147 GTA: the Busso V6 in a compact hatch

The 147 GTA puts Alfa Romeo’s 3.2-litre Busso V6 into a compact hot hatch. Top Gear reports 247 bhp and a six-speed manual. Its engine feature makes the case for the 147 GTA as an example of a distinctive V6 shaping a car’s personality, rather than serving as an anonymous source of output.

The contrast is part of the appeal: a relatively compact hatchback carries an engine more commonly associated with larger or more overtly sporting cars, giving the model a character that its body shape alone would not suggest.

4. Ferrari 296 GTB: a hybrid system that keeps a V6 at the centre

The 296 GTB shows how electrification can reinforce rather than erase a six-cylinder supercar identity. Its twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 works with an electric motor; Top Gear reports a combined-system output of 820 bhp and 546 lb-ft. Those figures describe the hybridized system, not the V6 by itself. Top Gear’s engine feature includes the 296 GTB.

It represents a different route to performance from the naturally aspirated examples elsewhere on this list: turbocharging and electric assistance contribute to the total, while the V6 remains the defining combustion engine.

5. Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 (997): a naturally aspirated flat-six at the end of an era

The 997-generation 911 GT3 RS 4.0 is a focused example of Porsche’s naturally aspirated flat-six tradition. Top Gear reports 500 bhp for this 4.0-litre Mezger-engined car. Top Gear’s list identifies the model and figure.

This is specifically the 997 GT3 RS 4.0, not a proxy for every 911 GT3. The later 992.2 GT3 has a different engine and specification; its reported 503-bhp flat-six belongs to that newer car, not this one. Top Gear’s current-car feature describes the 992.2 separately.

6. BMW M3 CSL (E46): the straight-six as the heart of a lighter coupe

The E46 M3 CSL’s S54 straight-six is inseparable from the car’s focused character. evo highlights the engine’s response and induction character, as well as the CSL’s weight-saving measures, which removed 110 kg compared with a standard E46 M3. The result is a pairing in which engine response and a lighter chassis work together rather than competing for attention. evo’s six-cylinder engine feature discusses the CSL and its engine.

7. Buick GNX (1987): a turbo V6 with period-shocking pace

The 1987 Buick GNX demonstrates that a six-cylinder performance car need not rely on a high-revving naturally aspirated engine. Road & Track reports 300 hp and a 0–60 mph time under five seconds for the GNX. These are publication-reported figures, not results from a standardized comparison in this article. Road & Track’s V6 overview covers the GNX.

Its turbo V6 offered a very different kind of speed from the NSX’s high-rpm character: forceful performance in a period American coupe, making the engine’s delivery and the car’s role part of the same statement.

8. Nissan GT-R (R35): a twin-turbo V6 built into a performance platform

The R35 GT-R made a twin-turbo V6 the basis of a long-running performance-car platform. Road & Track reports 600 hp and 481 lb-ft for the GT-R Nismo. Those numbers apply to the Nismo version; they should not be assigned to every R35 GT-R. Road & Track’s V6 overview specifies the Nismo.

The GT-R belongs here because the V6 is not a footnote in a larger package: it is the powerplant around which this turbocharged, all-wheel-drive performance car is built.

9. Volkswagen Golf R32 (Mk IV): the unusual VR6 in an all-wheel-drive hatch

The Mk IV Golf R32 combines a 3.2-litre VR6 with all-wheel drive in a compact hatchback. The VR6 is a narrow-angle six-cylinder layout, not a conventional V6 and not an inline-six. Road & Track notes that the US-market version described in its feature came with a six-speed manual. Road & Track’s V6 overview discusses the R32 and its configuration.

Its significance is as much about packaging as outright performance: the VR6 gave Volkswagen a distinctive six-cylinder option for a hatchback, while the R32’s drivetrain suited a very different role from a rear-drive coupe or mid-engine supercar.

10. Maserati MC20: a clean-sheet twin-turbo V6 in a mid-engine supercar

The MC20’s Nettuno is a contemporary twin-turbo V6 designed for a mid-engine supercar. Top Gear reports 621 bhp, 538 lb-ft and a 0–62 mph time under three seconds for the MC20. The figures are publication-reported specifications and performance claims for this model, not a head-to-head test against the other cars here. Top Gear’s six-cylinder engine feature covers the Nettuno-powered car.

Where the Golf R32 makes a six-cylinder fit a compact hatch and the NSX emphasizes high-revving usability, the MC20 uses a newly designed turbo V6 as the centrepiece of a modern supercar.

How to compare six-cylinder cars without crowning a false winner

Peak output alone cannot establish which car makes the most of its engine. These examples span different decades, vehicle types, aspiration systems and drivetrain arrangements. Some figures describe a hybrid system; others are tied to a specific trim, such as the XR6 Sprint’s overboost or the GT-R Nismo’s output. Reported acceleration figures also come from publication sources rather than one shared test.

  • Look at the engine’s role in the car: the NSX’s daily usability, the CSL’s response in a lighter coupe and the R32’s packaging each tell a different story.
  • Distinguish layouts and power delivery: a straight-six, V6, flat-six and VR6 are not interchangeable, and turbocharging or hybrid assistance changes how a particular car makes power.
  • Keep variant and year attached to every specification. The NSX’s generations differ; the GNX and XR6 Sprint figures refer to specific models; and the R35 Nismo’s output is not the output of every GT-R.
  • Treat the list as an editorial selection, not a universal ranking. The available cited material does not establish a common scoring method or a definitive best six-cylinder car.
