Current, destination-inclusive prices and comparable comfort findings are not established for every model here, so confirm the exact model year, trim, and local price before comparing. The strongest specific price and equipment details available in this comparison are for the 2026 Chevrolet Trax; several other figures below apply to 2025 models or have unresolved price differences.
How to read this budget SUV shortlist
“Budget” here means a small SUV being considered under a $30,000 ceiling, following the scope of an Edmunds/AP comparison. That does not mean every listed vehicle has a current, destination-inclusive entry price below $30,000. MSRP is not the same as the amount due at the dealer: destination, taxes, registration, options, fees, and local offers affect the final cost.
Style, simplicity, and comfort are shopper priorities, not a standardized score established across these ten vehicles. Comfort depends on seat fit, ride, noise, and the trim’s equipment; simplicity depends on controls and infotainment as well as the driver’s preferences. Use the list to choose vehicles to compare, then verify current specifications and test-drive the trims you can afford.
Ten small SUVs to put on your comparison list
1. Chevrolet Trax
The 2026 Trax has the most complete current-year entry-price evidence in this shortlist: Chevrolet lists a $21,700 starting price and 30 mpg combined. The manufacturer also lists Chevy Safety Assist as standard and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for the LS. Chevrolet notes that MSRP exclusions apply, so check the live listing for destination and other charges before treating that figure as an out-the-door price. These specifications support a value-oriented comparison, but they do not establish that every trim is comfortable or simple for every driver. Chevrolet 2026 Trax.

2. Nissan Kicks
The Kicks appears in the under-$30,000 comparison from Edmunds/AP, making it a reasonable candidate to investigate. The available evidence here does not establish its current model-year price, drivetrain availability, fuel economy, or trim-specific comfort equipment. Check those details on Nissan’s current listing before comparing it with a particular Trax or another SUV.
3. Hyundai Kona
For the 2025 Kona SEL with front-wheel drive, Hyundai lists EPA estimates of 28 mpg city, 35 highway, and 31 combined. Hyundai’s page also identifies that 2025 vehicle as an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Those are model-year- and trim-specific details, not a guarantee about a newer Kona. Confirm current pricing, equipment, and award applicability for the exact model year and trim. Hyundai 2025 Kona.
4. Toyota Corolla Cross
Toyota’s 2026 newsroom release lists gas Corolla Cross models from a $24,635 MSRP and manufacturer-estimated combined fuel economy of 30 mpg with all-wheel drive or 32 mpg with front-wheel drive. Toyota’s model page has also surfaced a $25,335 starting MSRP, so the starting-price figures do not align. Check Toyota’s live configurator and local inventory for the chosen model and drivetrain rather than assuming either figure is the current destination-inclusive price. 5. Honda HR-V
Honda’s 2025 release lists the HR-V LX with all-wheel drive at $26,900 MSRP, or $28,295 including destination, and fuel economy of 25 mpg city, 30 highway, and 27 combined. The MSRP excludes tax, license, registration, and options. Edmunds/AP describes the HR-V as spacious but underpowered, a useful tradeoff to assess on a test drive rather than a universal verdict. These prices and figures are for the 2025 LX AWD, not a current-year quote. Honda 2025 HR-V pricing and specifications and Edmunds/AP comparison.
6. Kia Seltos
The Seltos appears in the IIHS small-SUV summary and in a surfaced manufacturer comparison that mixes model years. That is enough to keep it on a research shortlist, but not enough to establish a current starting price, EPA figures, comfort equipment, or a specific safety award. Verify those facts for the exact year and trim; a class-summary mention alone does not prove an award. IIHS small-SUV class summary.
7. Mazda CX-30
IIHS lists the 2025-26 CX-30 among Top Safety Pick+ vehicles. Check the award’s exact year and applicability against the vehicle you are considering, then compare its current price and equipment with other SUVs in budget. The award does not by itself establish seat comfort, cargo usefulness, or ease of using the cabin controls. IIHS Top Safety Picks.
8. Subaru Crosstrek
The Crosstrek appears in a comparison table alongside vehicles from different model years, so that table is not a sound same-year price comparison. Confirm current pricing, standard drivetrain, fuel economy, and trim equipment using Subaru’s current specifications. If all-wheel drive is important, compare its value and efficiency with the specific front- or all-wheel-drive versions of the other candidates rather than assuming their configurations match.
9. Volkswagen Taos
The Taos appears in the IIHS small-SUV summary and a mixed-year comparison table. The available evidence does not establish its current starting price, fuel economy, or standard equipment for a comparable model year. Verify those details from Volkswagen for the trim under consideration, and check the exact safety result rather than inferring one from a class listing.

Edmunds/AP includes the Envista in its under-$30,000 comparison, supporting its consideration as a budget candidate. The available facts do not establish its current model-year price, drivetrain, or comfort criteria. Confirm the current trim’s price and equipment, then judge seat fit, ride, and cabin controls in person. Edmunds/AP comparison.

Compare the confirmed figures without mixing model years
The table separates dated, trim-specific facts from figures that still need current verification. MSRP is shown separately from destination-inclusive price where the source provides both; none of these figures should be read as a local transaction quote.

Chevrolet’s comparison page separately gives the Trax a $23,495 starting price and 28/32/30 mpg, figures that do not align cleanly with its 2026 model page. Do not combine those numbers with the 2026 specifications; compare vehicles using the same model year and source basis. Chevrolet vehicle comparison.

Published evidence offers a specific HR-V tradeoff—space versus limited power—and Edmunds/AP emphasizes the Trax’s passenger and cargo room and value. It does not provide a comparable comfort score for all ten SUVs. A specification sheet cannot tell you whether a seat fits your body or a control layout feels intuitive, so use the same checks in each vehicle.
Best Value
- Seat fit: Adjust the driver’s seat and steering wheel, check visibility, and sit in the front and rear seats you expect to use.
- Ride and noise: Drive over a familiar rough patch as well as smooth pavement. Listen for tire and wind noise at ordinary road speeds.
- Power delivery: Try a safe merge or hill if possible; this is especially relevant if you are considering the HR-V and are sensitive to acceleration.
- Controls: Set climate controls, pair a phone, and use navigation or audio without relying on a salesperson to do it for you.
- Practical space: Bring a child seat, mobility aid, or typical cargo item if relevant, and check both rear-seat access and cargo opening.
- Configuration: Record model year, trim, drivetrain, destination, and optional equipment for every quote so the comparison is like-for-like.
Check safety results and the final price by exact vehicle
IIHS lists the 2025-26 Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30, and Toyota Corolla Cross among award recipients. Award names and applicability are model-year-specific; check the vehicle’s exact listing rather than treating a class summary or an award for one year as proof for another. IIHS award listings.
Before deciding, get a written quote for the exact trim and drivetrain, with destination and dealer-installed options identified separately. Compare that figure with the manufacturer’s current price listing and check what safety and comfort features are standard versus optional. The advertised starting MSRP alone cannot establish which SUV will cost least to buy locally.
