For Pontiac, the muscle-car story starts with the GTO: General Motors dates its debut to 1964, when the midsize car arrived with a 325-horsepower V-8. The story also runs through the Firebird and Trans Am, Pontiac’s distinct pony-car line and road-racing identity. This list weighs historical importance, performance identity, design and collector significance—not a universal or measurable definition of “best.” “Golden age” here means the mid-1960s through the 1970s performance transition.
The cars below span GTOs, Firebird Trans Ams and one Can Am. Production figures and specifications are included only where the cited sources establish them; many details vary by engine, body style and year.
How the list is judged
The GTO and Firebird/Trans Am are related parts of Pontiac’s performance history, but they are different model lines: the GTO was a midsize muscle car, while the Firebird was a pony car. The Wisconsin Historical Society’s exhibit summary places the Trans Am in the SCCA series context, noting that the series was founded in 1966 and included the Firebird among the era’s pony cars.
The order below favors landmark status, distinctive design and documented performance or rarity. It is an editorial shortlist, not a claim that one car is objectively superior to another. Collector interest, driving priorities and restoration goals can lead to a different choice.

The 10 best classic Pontiac muscle cars
-
1964 Pontiac GTO
The GTO earns the first place on this list because it is the foundational Pontiac muscle-car story. General Motors’ heritage page dates its introduction to 1964 and describes it as a midsize car with a 325-horsepower V-8. That combination gives the model its central place in the period’s performance history. General Motors Heritage.
-
1965 Pontiac GTO
The 1965 model is an early representative of the GTO formula and a strong choice for readers drawn to the first years of Pontiac’s muscle-car identity. Hemmings’ collector-car selection, reproduced by the Pontiac-Oakland Club International (POCI), includes the 1965 GTO among its notable American collector cars. POCI’s reproduced Hemmings selection.

1967 Pontiac GTO
The 1967 GTO is a vivid expression of the model’s established formula, with styling and power that Hemmings’ POCI-reproduced entry treats as emblematic of the muscle-car era. That entry reports more than 81,000 built for the 1967 model year, a figure that marks its reach without diminishing its historical importance. POCI’s reproduced Hemmings selection.
-
1969 Pontiac GTO Judge
The Judge brought high-profile identity to the GTO line as a distinctive performance package. Its place in Pontiac’s collector-car story is reflected both in Hemmings’ POCI-reproduced selection and in the American Muscle Car Museum’s Pontiac inventory. Those sources support its significance as a recognized model, but do not establish a universal ranking against other GTO years. 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
The 1969 Trans Am was the first model-year Firebird to wear the Trans Am name. Hemmings’ entry reproduced by POCI describes the white cars with blue stripes and reports production of 689 hardtops and eight convertibles. That combination of first-year significance, striking livery and limited production makes it one of the most compelling Firebird Trans Ams on this list. POCI’s reproduced Hemmings selection.
-
1970 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
The 1970 Trans Am is a second-generation Firebird design anchor and represents the Firebird side of Pontiac performance at a point when the line had its own identity apart from the GTO. The American Muscle Car Museum’s Pontiac inventory includes a 1972 Trans Am, documenting the model’s place in a collection of significant Pontiac cars; the available cited sources do not establish detailed 1970 specifications, so this entry rests on its design and lineage role rather than a claimed power figure. 1973 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Super Duty
The Super Duty Trans Am shows that Pontiac performance continued into the 1970s transition rather than ending abruptly. Hemmings’ POCI-reproduced entry treats the 1973–74 Super Duty Trans Ams as a rare late-era highlight and gives a combined production figure of 1,195 cars across those two model years. That is a two-year total, not a figure for 1973 alone. POCI’s reproduced Hemmings selection.

1974 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Super Duty 455
The 1974 Super Duty 455 is the most thoroughly specified late-era car in the cited material. Audrain Automobile Museum states that 943 Trans Am 455 Super Duties were produced in 1974 and lists the featured car at 290 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. Audrain also gives 5.4 seconds for 0–60 mph and 14.5 seconds for the quarter-mile for that profile’s car; those are the museum’s figures for its described example, not a guarantee for every surviving 1974 car. 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
The 1977 Trans Am represents the late-1970s Firebird’s strong design and cultural identity. The American Muscle Car Museum’s Pontiac inventory documents a 1977 Can Am, but the cited sources do not establish a specific film connection or a sales claim for the 1977 Trans Am; this choice is based on its place in Pontiac’s Firebird and Trans Am lineage rather than those unsupported claims. -
1977 Pontiac Can Am
The Can Am broadens the list beyond the familiar GTO and Firebird families, adding an intermediate Pontiac performance model. The American Muscle Car Museum lists a 1977 Can Am in its Pontiac collection, providing a documented example of the model’s collector presence. Its inclusion here recognizes that Pontiac’s performance identity extended beyond two nameplates; the cited inventory does not establish production totals or comparative specifications. Choosing among the GTO, Trans Am and Can Am
| What matters most | Good starting point | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Foundational Pontiac muscle-car history | 1964 GTO | GM Heritage documents the model’s introduction and 325-horsepower V-8. |
| Early GTO character and collector recognition | 1965 or 1967 GTO | Both appear in Hemmings’ POCI-reproduced selection; the 1967 entry also reports more than 81,000 built. |
| Distinctive package identity | 1969 GTO Judge | It is represented in collector-car material and a museum inventory. |
| Firebird design and Trans Am lineage | 1969 or 1970 Trans Am | The 1969 car is the first-year Trans Am with documented production; the 1970 car represents the second-generation design. |
| Late-era performance and documented figures | 1973 or 1974 Super Duty Trans Am | The 1973–74 combined production figure and 1974-specific museum figures are available, with different year scopes. |
| A less familiar Pontiac performance branch | 1977 Can Am | It adds an intermediate model to a list otherwise centered on GTO and Firebird. |
What the production figures do—and do not—show
The figures in this list are not directly comparable measures of rarity: some refer to a single model year, while the Super Duty count of 1,195 covers 1973 and 1974 together. The 943 figure is for 1974 alone. The 1969 Trans Am figures distinguish hardtops from convertibles. Treat each number with its stated scope rather than using it to imply a complete ranking of scarcity.
For restorations or specification research, verify the exact car by model year, body style and equipment. The sources cited here establish a historical shortlist, not a complete specification guide for every engine or option combination.
