#1 Best Overall
VisitPA presents this byway as a way to explore the region’s historical and outdoor attractions. Use its official itinerary to choose stops, then verify local access and travel times; the available route information does not establish one fixed trip duration.
3. Route 6 through the northern tier
Best for: Small towns, northern Pennsylvania scenery and a fall-foliage drive.
Route 6 stretches more than 400 miles, according to VisitPA, but its foliage itinerary focuses on an 87-mile starter section. Featured stops include Wellsboro, Pine Creek Gorge and Bradford. The route is a good way to sample the northern tier without treating the full highway as a single-day itinerary. Consult VisitPA’s Route 6 foliage plan for its suggested stops, and check seasonal attraction access before setting out.

4. Lincoln Highway

Recommended Free Tools
VisitPA identifies the Lincoln Highway as a Pennsylvania artistic byway. The available official information does not establish a complete turn-by-turn itinerary, so decide on a specific segment and stops using local destination information rather than assuming one route plan covers the whole drive. Start with VisitPA’s Lincoln Highway page.
5. Pennsylvania Wilds parks and wildlife
Best for: Hiking, wildlife viewing and water activities.
Rank #3
- Used Book in Good Condition
VisitPA’s Trails Mix presents a two-day, five-stop trip through the Pennsylvania Wilds. Its featured stops include the Elk Country Visitor Center, Quehanna Wild Area and Bald Eagle State Park. Treat those as a framework for an outdoor getaway, and confirm park and facility access for your dates. The Pennsylvania Wilds Trails Mix itinerary has the official stop list.
6. Pine Creek Gorge and Wellsboro
Best for: A nature-focused side trip with gorge scenery.
VisitPA’s Route 6 foliage plan features Wellsboro and Pine Creek Gorge; it describes the west-rim drive as about 12 miles off Route 6. Check road and overlook access before making the detour, particularly if you are traveling in a season when conditions may affect access. See the Route 6 foliage itinerary for the route context.

- Easy to fold means no fumbling
- Heavy-duty lamination allows you to write on, wipe off

7. Alleghenies trail-and-railroad country
Best for: Forest, water, trails and railroad history.

This is a flexible regional drive, not a verified turn-by-turn route: choose the attractions that fit your schedule and confirm their access directly. Explore the Alleghenies Trails Mix overview for regional ideas.
8. Laurel Highlands outdoor loop

The Laurel Highlands regional overview highlights steep terrain, country markets, inns, dining and historic or scenic side routes. For a trip that adds a historical-road element, pair regional stops with the Historic National Road Byway. The sources do not define a single loop or fixed duration, so map your own sequence and check local conditions. VisitPA’s Laurel Highlands Trails Mix and Historic National Road itinerary provide starting points.

Best for: Trails, rivers, swimming, fishing and scenic byways.
VisitPA’s regional overview describes outdoor opportunities alongside historic sites and lodging, and says a two-day trip can be extended. It does not prescribe one fixed route. Choose a base and activities that suit your plans, then confirm access and operating details with the relevant park or attraction. See VisitPA’s Pocono Mountains overview.
10. Erie and Presque Isle State Park
Best for: A Lake Erie shoreline outing and outdoor time at Presque Isle.
VisitPA’s February 1, 2026 spring-break feature recommends Erie and Presque Isle State Park, which it describes as Pennsylvania’s only shoreline. The article calls the drive scenic and two hours, but its starting point is not specified in the available text; do not use that as a general travel-time estimate. Check park conditions and access before you go. See VisitPA’s Erie spring-break feature.

- Art and history: Brandywine Valley or the Lincoln Highway.
- Foliage and northern-tier towns: Route 6, with Wellsboro and Pine Creek Gorge as featured stops.
- Wildlife and outdoor recreation: Pennsylvania Wilds.
- Trails and railroad history: The Alleghenies, or the Laurel Highlands paired with the Historic National Road.
- Water and shoreline: The Poconos or Erie and Presque Isle.
Confirm the details that can change
Before departure, check PennDOT for current road conditions and construction, then confirm hours, restrictions and access with each park or attraction operator. Route descriptions and suggested itineraries do not guarantee current operating status. For example, VisitPA’s Route 6 page lists Kinzua Skywalk dates of September 1–October 31, 2026; recheck the schedule for the season you plan to visit.
