Good first cars under $10,000 are available, but the model name alone cannot tell you whether a particular used car is a good buy. Start with these ten candidates from Kelley Blue Book’s June 2025 list, then check the specific car’s condition, history, safety equipment, insurance cost, and fit for the driver. The list is a dated shortlist—not a survey of what every car costs in 2026.

Ten used cars to consider under $10,000

Kelley Blue Book’s June 30, 2025 selection includes the following models. Its descriptions are useful for narrowing the search, but actual price and suitability depend on the individual vehicle’s year, trim, mileage, maintenance, condition, and local market. KBB stresses that condition and history matter more than year or trim for most shoppers (Kelley Blue Book’s list and buying guidance).

Candidate What to consider
2013 Toyota Camry KBB highlights comfort, fuel efficiency—particularly for the hybrid—and family-friendly practicality. Check the specific car’s service records and hybrid-system condition if considering a hybrid.
2013 Honda Accord A spacious, comfortable midsize option with balanced driving characteristics. KBB notes that well-equipped EX-L examples may fall within the budget; verify the actual vehicle’s equipment and condition.
2014 Toyota Corolla A compact choice for straightforward transportation. KBB points to the LE’s automatic transmission and basic conveniences; confirm features on the specific car.
2014 Honda Civic KBB cites fuel economy, handling, and comfort. The Civic Si is a performance-oriented variant, not interchangeable with ordinary trims when choosing a first car.
2015 Subaru Legacy Standard all-wheel drive may suit winter roads or gravel. The 2.5i and more powerful 3.6R differ in output, so consider driving experience, running costs, and insurance for the exact trim.
2015 Mazda3 Available as a sedan or hatchback, with a 2.0-liter or more powerful 2.5-liter engine. KBB describes it as practical and engaging; IIHS/Consumer Reports also includes qualifying 2014–18 Mazda3s among its Good Choices, subject to build-date and other criteria.
2015 Honda Fit A small footprint and flexible cargo space make it worth considering for city use or hauling everyday items. KBB cites highway fuel economy of up to 40 mpg; treat that as the source’s stated maximum, not a guarantee for a used car or a verified result for a particular example.
2015 Subaru Outback Standard all-wheel drive, ground clearance, and passenger and cargo room suit some weather and lifestyle needs. The six-cylinder version is more powerful; assess its handling and ownership costs rather than assuming the most powerful trim is the best first-car choice.
2017 Ford Fiesta Sold as a sedan or hatchback, with a wide range of engines and trims. The ST and turbocharged variants are not equivalent to the more ordinary versions; evaluate the specific powertrain and insurance quote.
2013 Volvo XC70 An all-wheel-drive wagon with a premium cabin and, in some versions, a turbocharged six-cylinder. Because it is an older premium vehicle, scrutinize maintenance records and have a mechanic assess it; get an insurance quote before committing.

These ten are KBB’s dated recommendations, not a newly measured ranking of reliability, safety, or total ownership cost. A well-maintained car that suits the driver is a stronger candidate than a model picked on reputation alone.

How the safety-focused shortlist differs

For a safety-led search, the May 2026 IIHS and Consumer Reports list is a useful separate screen. It identifies 45 used vehicles starting below $10,000 that provide good crash protection and are suitable for young drivers (IIHS release on the 2026 list). The current table includes the 2014–18 Mazda3, for vehicles built after October 2013, and the 2014–25 Honda Civic as Good Choices (IIHS/Consumer Reports model list and criteria). That gives the 2015 Mazda3 and 2014 Civic a particularly direct connection between KBB’s under-budget suggestions and the newer safety list.

Other models in the 2026 Good Choices table include the 2017–25 Hyundai Elantra, 2014–25 Subaru Impreza, and 2014–25 Chevrolet Malibu. IIHS reports median retail prices of $6,100 for the earliest applicable Elantra year, $8,000 for the earliest applicable Impreza year, and $5,800 for the earliest applicable Malibu year. These are not ceilings for every model year or guaranteed prices for a particular listing.

The IIHS figures for the 2014–18 Mazda3 and 2014–25 Honda Civic are $6,900 and $8,100, respectively, for each model’s earliest applicable year. IIHS says these are Black Book retail medians based on April 2026 data, rounded to the nearest $100. They are market reference points, not quotes for a specific car.

What the IIHS/Consumer Reports criteria mean

The 2026 list requires vehicles to weigh more than 2,750 pounds, earn a Good driver-side small-overlap front rating, and meet Consumer Reports minimum scores for braking, emergency and routine handling, and controls/display usability. All listed vehicles have standard electronic stability control. The additional requirements for automatic emergency braking and acceptable or Good headlights apply to IIHS/CR Best Choices; do not assume every Good Choice meets those extra standards.

The list is a safety and price screen, not a complete verdict on reliability, insurance, or the condition of an individual used car. Check the model year and trim against the listing’s criteria rather than extending a rating across every version of a nameplate.

How to choose between the candidates

Compare the actual cars you can buy, not just the model names. Use these checks in order:

  1. Verify the vehicle’s identity and history. Match the VIN, title status, mileage, service records, and accident history. Resolve gaps or inconsistencies with the seller before arranging an inspection.
  2. Check safety by model year and trim. Look up crashworthiness and crash-avoidance equipment for the exact version. Do not treat a model’s presence on a safety list as proof that every year, build date, or trim qualifies.
  3. Arrange an independent inspection. Ask a qualified mechanic to assess the specific car before purchase. A dashboard scan or seller-provided report cannot establish overall mechanical condition.
  4. Get an insurance quote using the VIN. IIHS/CR advises shoppers to contact an insurer before buying. Premiums can change the practical affordability of a car, particularly when comparing powertrains and trims.
  5. Match the car to the driver and routes. Consider passenger and cargo needs, local weather, fuel use, engine output, visibility, and how comfortable the new driver feels behind the wheel.
  6. Check recalls and estimate upkeep. Confirm open recalls and compare the maintenance needs of the exact vehicle. No normalized reliability or repair-cost ranking is available across all ten candidates, so avoid choosing on an unsupported total-cost claim.

Which first car makes the most sense?

If safety-list eligibility is a priority, begin by comparing qualifying 2015 Mazda3 and 2014 Civic examples, then check the 2026 IIHS/CR table for other models that fit the driver’s needs. If winter traction or extra cargo room matters, the Legacy and Outback may deserve a look, but all-wheel drive does not replace careful driving or an inspection. For a simpler compact, compare Corolla, Civic, Mazda3, and Fit examples by condition, equipment, and insurance quote. In every case, let the specific car—not a generic model reputation—decide the purchase.
