The best electric SUVs for families depend on how many people you carry, how much luggage travels with them, what you can spend, and where you can charge. Car and Driver’s 2026 list is a useful starting point, not a universal family-fit ranking: it mixes two-row and three-row SUVs and includes model years from 2025 through 2027. Below, the best electric SUVs for families are organized around the tradeoffs families need to check before choosing.
How to use this family electric-SUV shortlist
Car and Driver says its 2026 ranking weighs roughly 200 data points, including comfort, cargo space, value, efficiency, and driving enjoyment. Its order is an editorial ranking, not a promise that the first vehicle suits every household. A two-row SUV may be a better match for a smaller family, while a three-row model can offer needed passenger capacity but leave less room for bags behind the third row.
The prices and EPA-estimated range spans below are the figures displayed in Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking page. They are not independently verified current offers or a trim-for-trim comparison; price, range, availability, and model year can vary. Check the exact vehicle and configuration being sold in your market.

Which of the 10 SUVs fit a family’s seating needs?
Start by separating two-row vehicles from three-row choices. The ranking includes both, and the list alone does not establish which models offer the most usable room for a particular family. If you need a third row, assess access, passenger comfort, and the luggage space left with all required seats occupied—not just maximum cargo volume with seats folded.
An Associated Press-hosted Edmunds comparison of 2025 models highlights the Kia EV9 as a comfortable, roomy three-row option, while noting that range and power vary by trim. It describes the Hyundai IONIQ 9 as roomy and quick to charge; the Volkswagen ID. Buzz as exceptionally spacious but limited by its cited 234-mile maximum range; the Rivian R1S as spacious and capable but expensive; and the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV as a luxury choice. Those observations concern 2025 vehicles and should not be read as current prices or specifications. Read the AP-hosted Edmunds comparison.

What to check in a three-row electric SUV
Third-row access and passenger fit
Try the entry mechanism with the second row set as your family would use it. Check whether children can reach the back safely and whether adults can sit there comfortably for the length of trips you make. Confirm car-seat installation, tether locations, and anchor positions in the exact configuration; the cited vehicle information does not settle those details model by model.
Cargo with every needed seat in use
Kia’s U.S. page for the 2026 EV9 lists 20.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 43.5 cubic feet behind the second, and 81.7 cubic feet behind the first. It also reports 42.8 inches of second-row legroom and describes a tilting, walk-in third-row entry. These are Kia’s published figures for the U.S. model. See Kia’s 2026 EV9 specifications.

Hyundai Motor Europe identifies the IONIQ 9 as a three-row model and lists 338 litres of luggage capacity with all three rows upright, rising to as much as 2,494 litres with the second and third rows folded. These are European-market figures in litres, not U.S. cargo-volume measurements. See Hyundai Europe’s IONIQ 9 page.
Range and charging on your actual routes
Compare the EPA range for the exact trim with the distance you commonly drive, including the effect of passengers, luggage, weather, speed, and route. A manufacturer’s fast-charging estimate is not a guaranteed stop duration: charging equipment, battery conditions, and other circumstances affect the result.

Kia says the 2026 EV9 can charge from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 24 minutes when using a 350 kW DC fast charger. That is a manufacturer estimate under stated equipment conditions, not a promise of a 24-minute family road-trip stop. Kia also says the 2026 EV9 has a built-in NACS port, and that a Kia NACS or CCS adapter is sold separately and may be needed at some chargers. Check the connector used by your intended charging network and confirm adapter compatibility for your model year before buying one.
Safety evidence by model year
Kia’s product page reports a 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ and a five-star NHTSA Overall Vehicle Score for the EV9. These are Kia’s cited claims. Before relying on them, check the relevant IIHS 2026 EV9 rating and NHTSA ratings for the tested model year and configuration. The shortlist does not provide matching official safety evidence for all ten vehicles, so it cannot support a like-for-like safety ranking.

A practical way to narrow the list
- Set the passenger requirement. If your household needs three rows, focus on verified three-row models and test third-row entry and passenger fit. If not, compare two-row space and cargo on its own merits.
- Measure the loaded-cargo need. Bring the stroller, sports gear, or luggage you actually carry, and check whether it fits with the seats your family needs upright.
- Compare exact trims. Match the trim’s price and EPA range to your budget and driving pattern; the displayed ranges span multiple configurations.
- Map charging. Check charging availability along regular routes, connector compatibility, and whether any adapter is needed. Treat quoted fast-charge times as conditional estimates.
- Verify the exact vehicle. Confirm current local availability, model year, safety ratings, and car-seat fit before purchase.
