For cross-country riding, start with a touring-ready motorcycle that fits you and your passenger, protects you from wind, and carries your gear. This shortlist covers ten current U.S.-market candidates from Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki and Indian Motorcycle. It is a feature-based guide, not a measured ranking: the available manufacturer information does not establish one universally best bike or compare comfort, reliability, range or performance under controlled conditions.

The Honda Gold Wing Tour is included as an adjacent full-touring option rather than a conventional American V-twin cruiser. Model years, trims, prices and dealer availability can change, so confirm the exact motorcycle with its manufacturer or dealer before buying.

How to choose a cruiser for a trip across America

Engine displacement alone does not make a motorcycle suitable for long days on the road. For cross-country travel, compare the features that affect comfort and practicality over hours of riding:

  • Wind protection: Fairing design and windshield coverage influence how much wind reaches your head and torso. The right airflow depends on your height, posture and helmet, so check it from the riding position you expect to use.
  • Luggage: Look at usable, weather-protected space and whether it will hold the gear you actually plan to bring. A trunk and saddlebags offer a different packing arrangement from a bagger’s storage.
  • Two-up comfort: If you will ride with a passenger, assess both seats, passenger footrests and available comfort features together—not just the rider’s seat.
  • Touring controls and technology: Cruise control, navigation, audio and rider aids can make long days more manageable, but equipment varies by model and trim.
  • Fit and manageability: Seat height is only one part of fit. Check reach to the bars and controls, balance at low speeds, and how the motorcycle feels when loaded and stopped.
  • Ownership logistics: Compare the dealer’s out-the-door price and ask about service access along the routes you expect to ride. The manufacturer pages cited here do not provide a consistent basis for ranking dealer support or reliability.

Manufacturer specifications below describe product claims, not independent test results. The lineup is organized by touring style rather than ranked from best to worst.

Ten touring-ready motorcycles to consider

1. Harley-Davidson Road Glide

The 2026 Road Glide is a bagger candidate for riders who want touring equipment without choosing a full-dress touring trim. Harley-Davidson lists a Milwaukee-Eight 117 engine, selectable ride modes, ride-tuned suspension and a 12.3-inch Skyline OS display on its 2026 Road Glide page. The manufacturer also lists 105 hp, 130 ft-lb of torque, 44 mpg and a 26.6-inch laden seat height; these are published specifications, not independent measurements or a promise of real-world fuel economy. Its advertised starting price is $25,999 plus, according to the same page; that is not a dealer quote or an out-the-door price. Harley-Davidson positions it for long-haul riding, but a test ride is the way to judge wind flow and fit for yourself.

2. Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited

For a more fully equipped Road Glide, the Limited adds a Grand Tour-Pak and is presented by Harley-Davidson as a long-haul touring trim. The manufacturer’s Road Glide Limited page also highlights a 12.3-inch display, navigation and premium audio. Confirm the model year and exact included equipment on the specific bike you are considering; the cited page does not provide a uniform independent comparison with the other candidates.

3. Honda Gold Wing Tour

The Gold Wing Tour is the shortlist’s adjacent full-touring choice, not a conventional American V-twin cruiser. Honda describes a horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine displacing 1,833cc, full-coverage bodywork and a 61-liter travel trunk; an automatic DCT is available. Honda’s Gold Wing model information also lists ABS and cruise control. See the Gold Wing Tour page and Gold Wing model page for the manufacturer’s details. Availability and equipment can differ by version, so verify the configuration with a dealer.

4. Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager ABS

The Voyager is Kawasaki’s full touring cruiser in this pair of Vulcan 1700 options. Kawasaki lists a 1,700cc fuel-injected V-twin, electronic cruise control, K-ACT ABS, locking saddlebags and a trunk on its Vulcan 1700 Voyager ABS page. Those features make it worth considering if enclosed luggage and a trunk matter to your travel setup. The cited page does not establish comparative comfort, range or reliability.

5. Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Vaquero ABS

The Vaquero is the bagger-style option alongside the Voyager in Kawasaki’s 2026 U.S. catalog. It is a distinct candidate for riders drawn to a lower-profile touring setup, but the available source confirms the current listing without supporting a detailed feature-by-feature comparison. Check Kawasaki’s Vulcan 1700 Vaquero ABS page for current model information and confirm the specific year and equipment before deciding.

6. Indian Roadmaster

The Roadmaster is Indian’s full-dress touring choice in this list. Its 2026 U.S. page specifies a Thunderstroke 116 V-twin, more than 36 gallons of weatherproof storage, a heated and cooled two-up seat, powered windshield, three ride modes, cruise control, ABS, tire-pressure monitoring and a seven-inch display with navigation features. Indian states a U.S. MSRP of $34,999, subject to change and excluding destination and handling, tax, title, license and registration. These are manufacturer-published details; check the 2026 Roadmaster page for the current configuration and pricing.

Indian also lists branded saddlebag and trunk liner travel bags for the Roadmaster. Treat these as model-specific accessories: their listing does not establish fitment on other motorcycles or current availability through a particular retailer. See the Indian luggage accessories page and verify compatibility by model year and trim.

7. Indian Pursuit

The Pursuit is one of Indian’s current touring families in the 2026 U.S. lineup. It belongs on a buyer’s comparison list if a full touring motorcycle from Indian is of interest, but the cited lineup-level information does not establish trim-specific specifications or equipment. Use Indian’s touring lineup page to identify current versions, then confirm the exact features of the model and trim offered by a dealer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Indian Challenger

The Challenger is a current Indian bagger family, distinct from its full touring families. It is a reasonable candidate for riders comparing bagger-style options, but the lineup information alone is not enough to make precise claims about a particular trim’s equipment or performance. Check the current Indian touring lineup and the individual model details for the year you plan to buy.

9. Indian Chieftain

The Chieftain is another current Indian bagger family. Because the available lineup-level listing does not establish a complete trim-by-trim specification set, compare the exact model you find with the Challenger and other baggers rather than assuming their equipment is interchangeable. Indian’s touring lineup page is the starting point for current model information.

10. Indian Roadmaster PowerPlus

Indian lists the Roadmaster PowerPlus alongside its other touring families. It should not be confused with the Thunderstroke-powered Roadmaster described above: the model name identifies a distinct option, and its precise features should be checked against the year and trim on offer. The cited 2026 touring lineup establishes its place in the family but does not provide enough detail here for a reliable specification comparison.

What the manufacturer information can—and cannot—tell you

Published specifications help identify a motorcycle’s layout and included touring equipment, but they do not settle how it will feel on a long trip. The available manufacturer pages do not provide a consistent dataset for independent fuel economy, real-world range, wet weight, rider and passenger comfort, reliability, or controlled long-distance performance across these ten models. Do not infer a cross-country range from engine size or treat a manufacturer’s fuel-economy figure as a test result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a model-family page may confirm that a motorcycle is in the current lineup without documenting the equipment on every trim. Verify the model year, trim, options and price for the actual motorcycle you intend to buy.

How to evaluate your finalists

  1. Choose the right category first. Decide whether you want a bagger with touring features or a full-dress touring motorcycle with more integrated luggage and passenger equipment. Consider the Gold Wing Tour as a distinct, adjacent touring formula.
  2. Ride in your normal setup. Sit on or test ride the motorcycle with your usual passenger, if applicable. Assess reach, posture, low-speed balance and how the windshield directs airflow at your riding height.
  3. Check real luggage needs. Bring or measure the items you expect to carry and check how they fit in the actual cases. Ask whether any liner or accessory is approved for that motorcycle’s model year and trim.
  4. Compare the full transaction. Request an itemized out-the-door quote rather than relying on an advertised starting price or MSRP. Confirm which options, fees and accessories are included.
  5. Plan for the route, not just the showroom. Consider the service locations available to you and whether the riding position, wind protection and passenger setup remain comfortable after an extended ride. No single specification can answer those questions for every rider.
