There is no evidence-backed universal winner among 2018 crossovers: safety awards and fuel-economy rankings measure different things. A useful shortlist includes the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Kicks, GMC Terrain, Honda HR-V, and Mazda CX-3—but the right pick depends on the exact vehicle’s equipment, condition, and price.
How to read this 2018 crossover shortlist
This is a criteria-based shortlist, not a single ranked top ten. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) identifies vehicles that met specified crash-test and equipment requirements; Kelley Blue Book (KBB) ranks vehicles by fuel economy. Neither source establishes an overall winner across safety, efficiency, space, value, and condition.
The models below are drawn from those two distinct kinds of evidence. The order is not a claim that one is better than another. Use the safety and fuel-economy sections to narrow the field, then compare the precise trim, drivetrain, passenger and cargo needs, local price, and condition of vehicles available to you.
Which 2018 crossovers have IIHS safety-award evidence?
IIHS’s 2018 small-SUV award list includes the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4, as well as other models. An award is meaningful evidence against the IIHS’s stated criteria, but it does not apply indiscriminately to every vehicle carrying the same model name. Headlights, optional crash-prevention equipment, and production date can determine eligibility. Check the specific vehicle’s build date and installed equipment against the IIHS 2018 small-SUV award listing.

What the 2018 award levels required
For Top Safety Pick+, IIHS required good ratings in the driver-side small-overlap, moderate-overlap front, original side, roof-strength, and head-restraint tests; an acceptable or good passenger-side small-overlap rating; advanced or superior front crash prevention; and good headlights. Top Safety Pick had the other specified crash-test requirements and at least acceptable headlights, but the passenger-side small-overlap threshold was not listed as a requirement. If front crash prevention was optional, a vehicle qualified only when equipped with it.
Model-specific conditions matter
- Honda CR-V: the award was tied to optional front crash prevention and specific headlights.
- Hyundai Kona: Top Safety Pick+ applied to vehicles built after May 2018, with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights.
- Mazda CX-5: Top Safety Pick+ applied to vehicles built after March 2018 with specific headlights.
- Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4: the listed award conditions specify particular headlights.
- Subaru Forester: the award depended on optional front crash prevention and specific headlights.
The award list also includes the BMW X2 (built after July 2018), Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-3, and Mitsubishi Outlander, with equipment or production-date qualifications detailed by IIHS. Confirm eligibility for the specific vehicle rather than assuming the model name guarantees an award.

What the passenger-side crash test says—and what it does not
In an April 4, 2018 release, IIHS said the CR-V and CX-5 were the only small SUVs evaluated up to that point to earn good structural ratings in its passenger-side small-overlap test. That is a finding about the evaluated group at that time and one specific test, not a complete safety ranking of all crossovers or an overall verdict on either vehicle.
The test sends a vehicle at 40 mph toward a barrier with 25 percent of its front end overlapping it; the passenger-side version places the overlap on the right and uses a passenger dummy. The same release reported good passenger-side test ratings for the BMW X1, Chevrolet Equinox/GMC Terrain, Jeep Compass, and Mitsubishi Outlander; the Outlander Sport was rated marginal and the Ford Escape poor. Which 2018 crossovers rank well for fuel economy?
KBB’s list titled “Most Fuel Efficient SUVs of 2018” displays these combined fuel-economy figures. They are the values shown on that KBB page, not figures independently verified here against EPA records; the page content reviewed does not establish a publication year or specify the applicable trim and drivetrain for each displayed number.

How to choose among the models
Start with the kind of evidence you value
If crash-test evidence is your first filter, start with the IIHS award list and verify its configuration conditions on the particular vehicle. If fuel economy is the priority, use KBB’s list as a starting point, then verify the exact vehicle’s rating for its engine and drivetrain. These are separate filters: a model’s appearance on one list does not establish its place on the other.
Match the vehicle to passengers and cargo
Decide how many people regularly ride in the vehicle and what you carry, then inspect the actual cabin and cargo area. The sources cited here do not provide comparable capacity figures, so they do not support a model-by-model cargo or seating ranking. Bring child seats, mobility equipment, luggage, or other regular cargo to a viewing if fit is decisive.

Evaluate the used vehicle, not just the model
For a used 2018 crossover, trim, installed safety equipment, build date, mileage, maintenance and accident history, overall condition, and local asking price all affect the choice. Confirm the features on the vehicle itself and compare the asking price with comparable local listings. A model-level award or fuel-economy position cannot establish the condition or value of an individual car.
What this shortlist can—and cannot—settle
The available evidence supports comparisons of IIHS award eligibility and KBB’s displayed fuel-economy ranking. It does not establish a universal top ten, a current used-price ranking, or comparative conclusions about reliability, ownership costs, warranties, cargo capacity, or the condition of vehicles for sale. Treat the models as candidates to investigate, not as a substitute for checking the specific vehicle.
