These 10 picks are organized by intended use, drawing on a direct 2026 250F motocross comparison and manufacturer information for trail and enduro models. They are U.S.-focused options, not a universal ranking; the available head-to-head test does not compare all ten or declare an overall winner.
10 dirt bikes to consider by riding style
The 2026 motocross candidates below come from Dirt Rider’s seven-bike 250F test, published March 9, 2026. The remaining picks fill different needs: Yamaha’s enduro-oriented two-stroke and Honda trail bikes. A manufacturer’s category and feature descriptions help establish intended use; they are not independent proof that a bike outperforms its rivals.
| Pick | Best fit | Why it belongs on the list | Published U.S. price information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda CRF250R | 250F motocross | One of the seven bikes in Dirt Rider’s 2026 250F comparison. Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2026 guide notes Showa suspension, Nissin brakes, a cable clutch and Pirelli tires. | $8,399 base price in Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2026 guide; not an out-the-door quote. |
| KTM 250 SX-F | 250F motocross | Included in the same direct 2026 250F comparison. It is a race-focused option to assess alongside the other bikes in that class, rather than a general trail recommendation. | $10,699 base price in Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2026 guide; not an out-the-door quote. |
| Yamaha YZ250F | 250F motocross | Included in Dirt Rider’s comparison and Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2026 guide. Consider it as a motocross candidate, not as a substitute for Yamaha’s cross-country YZ250X. | $8,899 base price in Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2026 guide; not an out-the-door quote. |
| GasGas MC 250F | 250F motocross | One of the seven bikes in Dirt Rider’s 2026 comparison. The available comparison information establishes its place in the field, not that it won the test. | Not stated in Dirt Bike Magazine’s cited 2026 guide. |
| Kawasaki KX250 | 250F motocross | Included in Dirt Rider’s comparison. Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2026 guide describes dual-injector EFI, selectable power modes, traction-control settings and smartphone connectivity. | $9,099 base price in Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2026 guide; not an out-the-door quote. |
| Triumph TF 250-X | 250F motocross | One of the seven machines in the direct comparison, making it a relevant option for buyers comparing current 250F motocross bikes. | $9,495 base price in Dirt Bike Magazine’s 2026 guide; not an out-the-door quote. |
| Husqvarna FC 250 | 250F motocross | Included in Dirt Rider’s 2026 250F comparison. Do not confuse it with the Husqvarna TC250 two-stroke discussed separately in Dirt Bike Magazine’s buyer guide. | Not stated in Dirt Bike Magazine’s cited 2026 guide for the FC 250. |
| Yamaha YZ250X | Cross-country and enduro | Yamaha describes this 249cc two-stroke as tuned for enduro, with a wide-ratio five-speed transmission for terrain from tight woods to open fire roads. | Not stated in the cited Yamaha model information. |
| Honda CRF300F | Adult trail riding | Honda’s CRF/F line is its trail-bike family. The CRF300F has a 294cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, a six-speed transmission and fuel injection, according to Honda. | Honda’s current U.S. CRF/F page lists a $4,999 base MSRP for the CRF300F and states destination separately; confirm the model-year listing and total with a dealer. |
| Honda CRF110F | Youth and family trail riding | Honda describes it as a step up from the CRF50F, with electric start, fuel injection and an automatic clutch. Rider fit still needs to be checked in person. | Not stated in the cited Honda trail-bike information. |
The 2026 prices in Dirt Bike Magazine’s guide are listed base prices, not guaranteed dealer prices or delivered totals. Honda’s current CRF/F page uses a different model-year and price presentation; its base MSRP excludes the separately stated destination charge. Taxes, assembly, freight and other local costs may change what a buyer pays.
Choose the category before choosing a model
Closed-course motocross
Motocross bikes are intended for tracks and racing, not chosen simply because they have a competition name or high performance. Honda explicitly distinguishes its CRF/R motocross line from its CRF/F trail line. The seven 250F bikes in Dirt Rider’s March 2026 comparison—Honda CRF250R, KTM 250 SX-F, Yamaha YZ250F, GasGas MC 250F, Kawasaki KX250, Triumph TF 250-X and Husqvarna FC 250—are a useful comparison pool if you specifically want a 250 four-stroke motocross bike. The test’s reported field does not support a universal winner or a ranking against trail and enduro bikes.

Trail riding and family use
Honda identifies its CRF/F models as trail bikes and offers a size range rather than one bike for every rider. Its lineup includes the CRF50F, CRF110F, CRF125F, CRF125F Big Wheel and CRF300F. Honda calls the CRF50F a first-bike option and describes the CRF110F as a next step. Those are manufacturer descriptions; they do not replace a fit check or an assessment of a rider’s experience, strength and control.
Cross-country and enduro
A motocross bike and a cross-country model may share a brand or displacement but serve different terrain. Yamaha describes the 2026 YZ250X as a cross-country/enduro machine: its 249cc two-stroke engine is tuned for enduro, and its wide-ratio five-speed transmission is intended for both tight woods and fire roads. That configuration makes it a more directly supported candidate for those uses than assuming a motocross model will suit them equally well.

How to narrow the choice
- Match the bike to the place you ride. Decide whether the priority is a motocross track, casual trails, technical woods, cross-country racing or youth riding. A bike built for one setting may be a poor match for another.
- Check rider fit, not just displacement. Consider the rider’s size, experience, seat and control reach, and whether the starting and clutch arrangement are manageable. Honda’s range demonstrates that trail models differ in size and features; sit on the actual bike and assess fit before buying.
- Compare the engine and equipment that matter for your use. Two-stroke and four-stroke designs, displacement, fueling, gearing, suspension, brakes and starting arrangements vary by model. For example, Yamaha identifies the YZ250X as a 249cc two-stroke with a wide-ratio five-speed, while Honda lists the CRF300F as a 294cc air-cooled single with six speeds and fuel injection.
- Use the right kind of evidence. A head-to-head test can compare motocross competitors within its tested class. Manufacturer pages are useful for specifications and intended category, but a maker’s description is not an independent performance verdict.
- Confirm the full purchase terms. Check the model year, local inventory, dealer charges, destination or freight, taxes, assembly and local registration requirements. A published base MSRP alone does not establish your total cost.
Safety belongs in the buying decision
Kawasaki’s official KX250 page advises riders to wear a helmet, eye protection and proper apparel. Choose protective equipment appropriate to the riding activity and make sure it fits; no particular gear model is evaluated here.
