Consumer Reports gives it a 93 reliability score and J.D. Power gives it 81/100 for quality and reliability. Because the 2025 Forester is redesigned and the rating is carried over from the prior model year, treat that result as encouraging evidence—not a guarantee for every new component.
If you need a traditional, body-on-frame 4×4 with serious trail hardware, choose the Jeep Wrangler instead. Its 85/100 J.D. Power score is strong, but purchase and running costs can be much higher than those of a compact crossover.

How this ranking works
This is a U.S.-market, 2025 comparison. “Affordable” uses Consumer Reports’ under-$30,000 screening idea as a reference, while recognizing that trim, options and local transactions can push a vehicle above that figure. A new-car MSRP, a J.D. Power people-paid price and a used-car price are different measures, so they are not interchangeable.

Power’s quality-and-reliability measure reflects defects, malfunctions and design flaws reported by verified owners, with ratings updated each September. Consumer Reports publishes its own reliability scores and recommended lists. The numbers below should be compared within their source, not treated as a single universal scale.

1. Subaru Forester
The Forester leads because it has the best combination of published reliability evidence in this group. Its Consumer Reports score is exceptionally high, while J.D. Power also places it above the RAV4. The important qualification is model-year continuity: Consumer Reports’ 2025 figure applies the previous model year’s rating to the redesigned vehicle. Buyers should obtain the exact warranty, recall and service information for the 2025 vehicle before committing.

2. Honda CR-V
The CR-V is the best mainstream value when a buyer wants a compact crossover and a documented transaction range that starts in the mid-$20,000s. Select the drivetrain first, then compare the resulting trim price; not every configuration has the same AWD availability or equipment.

3. Jeep Wrangler
The Wrangler is the clear choice when “4×4” means a real off-road system rather than an AWD crossover. Its body-on-frame construction and selectable 4×4 focus explain its high placement despite a wide price spread. Budget for tires, fuel, insurance and specialized maintenance as well as the purchase price.

4. Toyota RAV4
The RAV4 remains a practical compact-crossover option, but its J.D. Power score trails the Forester and CR-V. The people-paid range spans more than $19,000, so the badge alone does not identify an affordable configuration. Compare actual dealer transactions and verify the AWD system on the vehicle you are inspecting.
5. Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid
The plug-in hybrid has stronger Consumer Reports reliability evidence than the regular RAV4 and can reduce fuel use for drivers who can charge regularly. Its higher purchase cost makes payback dependent on electricity access, driving distance and local energy prices; it is not automatically the budget choice.
Rank #4

6. Honda CR-V Hybrid
Consumer Reports recommends the CR-V Hybrid, but the available evidence does not provide a directly comparable numeric reliability score here. Treat it as a promising efficiency choice, then confirm AWD availability, battery coverage and the complete out-the-door price for the selected trim.
7. Subaru Forester Hybrid
The Forester Hybrid is also Consumer Reports recommended. Because the hybrid powertrain is newer, there is less long-term owner history than for established gas versions. Buyers who value proven service patterns should compare the hybrid’s warranty and local technician support with the conventional Forester.

8. Jeep Compass
The Compass appears in Consumer Reports’ 2025 SUV ratings, but the available evidence does not justify a precise numeric reliability position. Verify the current model’s drivetrain, safety equipment, incentives and owner-reported reliability before treating it as a bargain.
9. Ford Bronco
The Bronco is included in J.D. Power’s 2025 dependability study and can deliver the hardware many buyers mean by 4×4. Affordability is especially trim-sensitive: larger engines, removable-roof equipment, heavy-duty axles and option packages can move the transaction far beyond a base-model advertisement.
10. Ford Maverick
The Maverick is included for shoppers willing to use a compact pickup instead of an SUV. Consumer Reports reports separate reliability scores for the gas Maverick and Maverick Hybrid, with the hybrid scoring lower. Confirm whether the exact truck has AWD or another 4×4 configuration; front-drive and AWD versions are not equivalent for traction or ground clearance.

AWD, 4WD and “4×4” are not interchangeable
- AWD: Usually designed to distribute torque automatically on paved roads and in moderate slippery conditions.
- Selectable 4WD: Lets the driver choose a drive mode for loose surfaces; operation and speed limits vary by system.
- Low range: Provides gearing for slow, controlled work on steep or technical terrain. Many crossovers do not have it.
- Ground clearance and approach angles: Determine whether the vehicle can pass obstacles without striking the body, suspension or underbody.
Before buying, read the specification sheet for the exact trim. A vehicle marketed with “4×4,” “AWD” or “traction control” may not provide the same hardware or capability.
How to choose among the top four
- Pick the use case: Choose the Forester for a reliability-first compact crossover, the CR-V for broad value and availability, the Wrangler for genuine off-road 4×4 hardware, or the RAV4 when its specific trim, pricing and efficiency fit your needs.
- Set a transaction budget: Include taxes, registration, financing, insurance, tires, fuel and likely maintenance. Use the people-paid figures as market context, not as a promise for your local dealer.
- Confirm drivetrain hardware: Check the window sticker and owner’s manual for AWD/4WD mode, low range, differential equipment, tow rating and clearance.
- Check service support: Identify a nearby dealer or independent shop that can service the engine, hybrid system and drivetrain you are considering.
- Price an equivalent used vehicle: Compare model year, mileage, accident history, maintenance records and remaining warranty rather than comparing badges alone.
Buying a used affordable 4×4
- Request maintenance records and verify the vehicle identification number against title, accident and recall information.
- Inspect the transfer case, differentials, axles, underbody and suspension for leaks, impact damage or corrosion.
- Check that all four tires are the same size and have similar tread depth; mismatched tires can stress some AWD systems.
- Test every drive mode at the speed and surface specified by the owner’s manual, without forcing a system that will not engage.
- Have an independent mechanic perform a pre-purchase inspection, including a scan for stored fault codes.
- For hybrids and plug-in hybrids, obtain battery-health information and confirm warranty eligibility before purchase.
What “most reliable cheap 4WD SUV” means in practice
For the strongest published reliability case at a compact-SUV price, start with the Forester, but account for the redesign caveat. For a traditional 4×4, start with the Wrangler and accept its potentially higher acquisition and operating costs. The CR-V and RAV4 can be sensible affordable choices when the exact AWD trim, transaction price and service history check out. Lower-ranked models remain viable, but their available evidence here is less complete or their affordability depends more heavily on configuration.
