U.S. dealerships used paper forms and manual workarounds because a June 19, 2024 cyber incident at CDK Global took major dealer-management systems offline. The outage did not close every dealership, but it disrupted sales, deliveries, inventory, customer records, accounting, service, parts, repairs and warranty work while CDK restored access in stages.
What happened to CDK Global?
CDK Global supplies dealer-management software (DMS) used by automotive retailers. After a cyber incident began on June 19, 2024, CDK suspended systems serving dealership customers. CDK described the event as a “ransom event,” a statement quoted by CBS News.

The company restored services in phases rather than bringing every function back at once. Group 1 said CDK advised that restoration would take “several days and not weeks.” That timetable referred to restoring access, not instantly clearing every paper backlog or correcting every downstream delay.
This was a third-party outage
The disruption was not confined to one dealer’s computers. AutoNation, Group 1 Automotive and Sonic Automotive filings described effects on dealer-management, customer-relationship, sales, inventory and accounting systems. A federal court description of DMS functions also includes sales, parts, service, repairs and warranties.

Why dealerships reached for pen and paper
A DMS normally keeps the records and workflows that connect a customer, vehicle, technician, salesperson and payment. When those systems were unavailable, dealers could remain open only by recreating parts of the process manually.
| Dealership function | Effect of the outage | Typical continuity workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Sales and finance | Staff could not reliably retrieve customer, deal or accounting records. | Paper worksheets, manual approvals and later data entry. |
| Vehicle delivery | Completed transactions and delivery paperwork could be delayed. | Handwritten checklists and scheduling outside the DMS. |
| Inventory | Vehicle locations, status and availability were harder to track. | Physical counts, spreadsheets or whiteboards. |
| Customer records and CRM | Staff had limited access to contact histories and follow-up tasks. | Phone logs, printed records and locally maintained lists. |
| Service and repairs | Repair orders, technician assignments and job histories were interrupted. | Paper repair orders and manual dispatching. |
| Parts and warranties | Parts, warranty and claim workflows could not move normally through the system. | Manual tickets, calls and deferred system entry. |
| Accounting | Posting, reconciliation and reporting were slowed or performed outside normal workflows. | Offline records followed by reconciliation after restoration. |
These workarounds kept some operations moving, but they added duplicate entry, slower customer handoffs and a risk that records would have to be reconciled later.

Did the CDK cyberattack stop car sales and repairs?
Sales continued, but transactions and deliveries were disrupted
The evidence does not support a blanket shutdown of U.S. car sales. Dealers stayed open, yet many could not process a sale or delivery through their normal system. Public-company filings describe negative effects on transactions and operating results rather than a total halt across every store.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA dealership could still speak with a buyer, inspect a vehicle or prepare paperwork. The difficulty was completing the connected administrative work: verifying inventory, recording the deal, coordinating finance and scheduling delivery. That is why a store might appear open while taking longer to deliver a vehicle or temporarily limiting certain transactions.

Service departments and repairs also felt the outage
Service, parts, repairs and warranty work depended on the same DMS environment or its connected workflows. A customer could bring in a vehicle, but the adviser and technician might have to create a paper repair order, check parts manually and postpone final entry until systems returned. The result was slower throughput and more difficult status updates, not proof that every repair facility stopped working.
How many dealerships were exposed?
Contemporaneous reporting put CDK’s customer footprint at roughly 15,000 North American dealerships. That concentration meant an outage at one software provider could reach many otherwise independent businesses at the same time.

The California New Car Dealers Association said CDK’s DMS had “substantial market penetration in California.” The incident therefore illustrated concentration risk: a dealer can have its own staff, buildings and local processes, yet still share a critical operational dependency with thousands of competitors.

| Negative operating effects | Transaction and operating impacts reported by AutoNation, Group 1 and Sonic | Company filings document disruption but do not establish one combined industry loss figure. |
The practical cost included delayed or lost transactions, labor spent on manual processing, slower service throughput, inventory and accounting backlogs, and the expense of reconciling records after recovery. Which costs a particular dealer incurred depended on its transaction volume, duration of the interruption and ability to operate offline.
What happened after systems came back?
Service restoration did not end the dispute. A federal court opinion records insurer claims alleging that CDK halted access to vital business-management software after a catastrophic cyberattack. Those claims concern insurance responsibility and coverage, not a final finding that every allegation was proven.
A separate legal track involved antitrust claims about DMS and data-integration pricing. The DMS settlement administrator says eligible U.S. auto retailers could receive money from settlements totaling $129.5 million, including a proposed $100 million CDK settlement. Those amounts relate to alleged overcharges and are not a quantified reimbursement of dealers’ cyberattack losses.

What the outage changed for dealer technology planning
The incident made several continuity questions concrete for dealers evaluating a DMS or renewing contracts:
- Dependency: Identify which sales, service, accounting and warranty functions fail if one provider is unavailable.
- Offline capability: Maintain tested paper or local procedures for repair orders, deliveries, inventory counts and customer contact.
- Integration and data portability: Know how records can be exported and how essential systems can operate when the primary DMS is down.
- Recovery communication: Require clear status updates, restoration milestones and escalation contacts during a vendor incident.
- Insurance wording: Review whether cyber coverage includes dependent-business-interruption losses caused by a third-party provider, subject to the policy’s definitions, limits and eligibility.
- Total operational cost: Compare not just subscription price, but manual-continuity expense, recovery time and the cost of being unable to transact.
CDK’s 2024 outage showed why those questions belong in business-continuity planning, even when the dealership itself has not been directly breached.
