For a lower-risk choice based on clearly documented U.S. model-year specifications, the 2023 Honda Grom is the better-supported pick. The CFMOTO Papio XO-1 offers six transmission speeds to the Grom’s five and a distinctive dual-headlight design, but the available official XO-1 figures here are regional and do not verify a U.S.-spec 2023 model. Treat the numbers as a comparison of documented versions—not a head-to-head road test.
Start with the model year and market
The Honda figures below come from American Honda’s official U.S. 2023 specification sheet. CFMOTO’s Taiwan page identifies its XO-1 as a 2024 model, while a Korean page gives another regional reference. CFMOTO’s U.S. Papio is described by a San Francisco dealer as the model called XO-1 in other markets, but that dealer account is not an official U.S. 2023 XO-1 specification sheet.
That distinction matters: regional equipment, regulations, model names and specifications can differ. Confirm the model year, trim and equipment on the actual motorcycle before using the comparison to decide what to buy.
How the documented specifications compare
| Specification | 2023 Honda Grom (U.S.) | CFMOTO Papio XO-1 (regional reference) |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 124cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder four-stroke; PGM-FI. Honda 2023 specification sheet | Taiwan: 124.5cc, air-cooled single, Bosch EFI. Taiwan lists 7kW/9.5PS at 8,250rpm and 9.2Nm at 6,500rpm for its 2024 model. CFMOTO Taiwan |
| Transmission | Five-speed | Six-speed |
| Weight | 223lb curb weight for the listed base model; Honda’s announcement separately gives 231lb for an ABS version. Confirm trim. Honda specifications Honda announcement | Taiwan: 114kg equipped weight (about 251lb). The source uses a different weight label and market, so this is not a perfectly like-for-like comparison. CFMOTO Taiwan |
| Seat height | 30in | Taiwan: 760mm (about 29.9in) |
| Fuel tank | 1.6gal | Taiwan: 7L (about 1.85gal) |
| Brakes and ABS | 220mm front and 190mm rear discs. Honda describes an ABS version; confirm the trim on the bike being considered. Honda specifications Honda announcement | Taiwan page lists 210mm front and 190mm rear discs and dual-channel ABS in its feature text. Verify equipment on the local bike. CFMOTO Taiwan |
| Fuel economy | 166.5mpg estimate under EPA exhaust-emission measurement procedures; Honda says actual mileage varies with riding conditions. Honda specifications | No matching official XO-1 MPG figure established in the regional pages cited here. |
The Korean distributor’s XO-1 reference lists 124cc, 7kW, 9.3Nm, six speeds, 114kg, a 7L tank, a 760mm seat and ABS. It also warns that configuration can vary with local law and regulation; do not combine its numbers with Taiwan’s into a single universal specification. CFMOTO Korea

Where each bike has an advantage
Transmission and engine
The clearest paper advantage for the XO-1 is its six-speed transmission versus the Grom’s five. That gives the CFMOTO one additional ratio, but the published specifications do not establish which bike accelerates faster, cruises better or feels more engaging. The regional engine figures are not a controlled comparison, and there is no head-to-head test behind this recommendation.
Size and everyday fit
On the cited figures, the seat heights are nearly identical: 30in for the Grom and about 29.9in for the Taiwan XO-1. The XO-1’s stated tank is larger, but tank capacity alone does not establish greater range. Honda’s 166.5mpg figure is an estimate with an explicit real-world-variation caveat; there is no corresponding official XO-1 figure here to support a fuel-economy winner.

Weight needs more caution. Honda’s 223lb curb figure is for the listed base model, with its announcement giving 231lb for an ABS version. CFMOTO Taiwan calls the XO-1’s 114kg figure equipped weight. Different trims, markets and labels make these values unsuitable as a precise weight contest.
Styling and equipment
The XO-1’s dual headlights give it a more unusual look than the Grom, making styling a genuine point of differentiation rather than a measurable performance advantage. CFMOTO Taiwan also lists an optional LED pixel-screen kit and USB port; availability and fitment outside that market are not established. Honda describes an ABS version of the Grom, so buyers should compare the actual trims rather than assume every example has the same equipment.

Price, availability and ownership support
A San Francisco CFMOTO dealer describes the U.S. Papio as the model called XO-1 in other global markets, gives a $2,999 starting MSRP for the original Papio, and says supply of that original is limited. This is dealer context, not a dated, official 2023 XO-1 price. CFMOTO Taiwan lists NT$109,900 for its regional XO-1 and marks it sold out; neither the currency nor that market’s availability establishes U.S. pricing or stock. SF Moto dealer article CFMOTO Taiwan

Honda says the Grom has a healthy aftermarket, a replaceable oil filter, and an exhaust made in separate downpipe and muffler pieces. Its announcement also describes a transferable one-year limited warranty. Those are useful ownership considerations, not proof that the Grom will be more reliable or cost less to own. CFMOTO Taiwan says its distributor offers after-sales and warranty service; confirm the terms, parts access and dealer support with the seller in your market. Honda announcement CFMOTO Taiwan
Quick Recap
Best Value
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Grom if a clearly documented U.S. 2023 specification, Honda’s stated aftermarket support and an established local Honda dealer network matter most to you. Check whether the specific bike is the base or ABS version.
- Consider the XO-1 if you prefer its styling or value having six speeds, and you can verify the exact market version, equipment, warranty and parts support available locally.
- For either bike, compare actual local purchase offers and sit on or test ride the specific motorcycle if possible. Published specifications cannot tell you which one feels better to you, and the cited evidence does not establish a comparative winner for acceleration, handling, braking, reliability or resale.
