ペダルではなくスロットルで走る
一般的な電動アシスト自転車は、ペダルを踏む力をモーターが補助します。これに対してMUは、右手のスロットルグリップを回すだけで発進・加速します。ペダルを漕ぐための駆動力を補助する車両ではないため、操作感も法的な扱いも電動アシスト自転車とは別物です。
車道モードの最高速度は約20km/h。歩道モードでは約6km/hに制限されます。電源を入れた直後は歩道モードになり、車道モードへ切り替える際はいったん停止する必要があります。車道と歩道を頻繁に行き来する使い方では、モード切り替えの手順を理解しておく必要があります。
走行距離は、測定方法によって約40kmまたは約47kmとされています。約40kmは電動アシスト自転車の業界統一テストに準じた数値、約47kmはJEMPAの測定方法による数値です。気温、乗員の体重、坂道、停止・発進の回数などで実際の距離は変わるため、どちらも実走行距離を保証する値ではありません。

バッテリーは車体から取り外して屋内で充電できます。通常の充電時間は約5時間で、容量の80％までの急速充電にも対応します。保管場所にコンセントがない場合でも、バッテリーだけを室内へ持ち込める点は、集合住宅や屋外駐輪場で使う際の利点です。
坂道発進時のウイリーを抑える制御
パナソニックは、乗車重量65kgを想定した場合、12度の斜面を登る能力を訴求しています。坂道でスロットルを急に開けた際には、加速度センサーで出力を抑制し、前輪が浮き上がるウイリーを軽減する制御も採用しました。

ただし、12度という性能値は一定の条件下でのものです。荷物を多く積んだ場合や、濡れた路面、砂利、段差のある坂道では、発進性能や安定性が変わります。MUの最大積載は乗員と荷物の合計75kgなので、買い物などで荷物を載せる場合は重量にも注意が必要です。
「免許不要」でも公道走行には手続きがある
特定小型原動機付自転車は、運転免許を必要としません。ただし、運転できるのは16歳以上です。16歳未満の人が運転することは禁止されており、16歳未満の人に車両を貸したり提供したりすることもできません。

車道・歩道の通行ルール
車道と歩道の区別がある道路では、原則として車道の左側端を通行します。自転車道は通行できます。一方、歩道を走れるのは、歩道通行が認められる標識・標示がある場合に限られます。

- 歩道通行が認められる標識・標示があること
- 歩道モードで最高速度を約6km/hに制限すること
- 最高速度表示灯を点滅させること
- 歩行者を優先し、通行を妨げる場合は一時停止すること
歩道モードの約6km/hは、車道モードの約20km/hとは別の上限です。「歩道なら20km/hのまま走れる」「歩道ならどこでも走れる」という理解は誤りです。
信号、右折、ヘルメットの扱い
MUは原動機付自転車として信号機に従う必要があります。信号機のある交差点で右折する場合は、原則として二段階右折を行います。自動車のように交差点の中央を横切って右折する方法は取れません。
ヘルメットは法律上の努力義務です。着用しなくても直ちに着用義務違反になる制度ではありませんが、警察庁は事故時の頭部被害を軽減するため着用を推奨しています。飲酒運転と二人乗りは禁止です。

特定小型原付としての条件
「電動で、最高速度が20km/h以下」であれば、どの車両でも特定小型原動機付自転車になるわけではありません。主な基準は以下のとおりです。

MUは、パナソニックが「特定小型原付性能等確認制度適合」と表示しているモデルです。基準を満たさない車両は、見た目が電動キックボードや自転車に似ていても、別の原動機付自転車などとして扱われます。
購入後の保証と盗難補償
製品保証は、本体が1年、フレーム・フロントフォーク・駆動ユニットが3年です。製品登録を完了すると、バッテリーも3年間の保証対象になります。
購入から3年以内に盗難に遭った場合は、車体価格の30％と組立手数料4,400円（税込）で、同タイプの新車を購入できる盗難補償優遇制度があります。利用条件や必要な手続きは購入時に販売店で確認しておくべきでしょう。
