Tesla Protests and Vandalism Surge as FBI Investigates Incidents Including Las Vegas

The FBI said Tesla vehicles and properties were attacked in at least nine states during a period of anti-Musk protests. Here is what is confirmed—and what is not.

A wave of protests against Elon Musk and Tesla in 2025 coincided with a separate series of arson, gunfire and vandalism incidents at Tesla vehicles and properties. The FBI said on March 21, 2025, that known attacks had occurred in at least nine states and appeared to have been carried out by lone offenders.

That distinction matters for Tesla owners, dealership employees and anyone covering the story: lawful demonstrations and criminal attacks are not the same event, and the FBI has not announced evidence that the protest movement organized the violence.

What the FBI is investigating

The FBI’s March 21 public-service announcement described attacks on several types of Tesla-related property:

The FBI said the known criminal incidents appeared to have been committed by lone offenders. That is a limited assessment, not proof that every incident was unrelated or that investigators had identified every participant. It also does not establish a connection between the attacks and Tesla Takedown, the protest campaign that organized demonstrations against Musk’s role in the Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency.

Why Tesla Takedown protests are part of the story

The protests focused on Musk’s political influence and his leadership of Tesla. Demonstrators held rallies outside Tesla locations and encouraged pressure on the company, including through demonstrations and calls to reduce support for the brand.

Organizers described the protests as peaceful and publicly opposed violence and property destruction. A protest outside a showroom, a damaged Cybertruck and an overnight arson attack may all appear in the same news cycle, but they require separate evidence and should not be treated as one organized operation without a documented connection.

The Las Vegas Tesla collision-center attack

The most detailed federal case began with an attack at a Tesla collision business near 6260 West Badura Avenue in Las Vegas. Authorities said the incident occurred at about 2:45 a.m. on March 18, 2025.

According to the Justice Department, the attacker used Molotov cocktails and a .30-caliber AR-style firearm. Five Tesla vehicles were damaged or destroyed, and the word “Resist” was spray-painted on the building.

Investigators included the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Clark County fire investigators. Police arrested Paul Hyon Kim on March 26, 2025. The initial federal complaint accused him of arson and unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm; those allegations were subject to the presumption of innocence at that stage.

Kim later pleaded guilty to two counts of arson of property used in interstate commerce, one count of attempted arson of property used in interstate commerce and one count of unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm. The Justice Department said the charges carried a five-year mandatory minimum and an aggregate statutory maximum of 70 years. Sentencing was postponed for 90 days and, according to the latest cited report, was scheduled for August 27, 2026, while the court addressed a report and restitution issues. Nevada state charges were dropped while the federal case continued.

Other federal Tesla-property cases

On March 20, 2025, the Justice Department announced charges in three separate cases. The allegations were:

Location Allegation announced by prosecutors
Salem, Oregon A defendant allegedly threw about eight Molotov cocktails at a Tesla dealership while carrying a suppressed AR-15-style rifle.
Loveland, Colorado A defendant allegedly tried to ignite Teslas and possessed materials prosecutors said could be used to make additional incendiary devices.
Charleston, South Carolina A defendant allegedly wrote profane messages near Tesla charging stations and set the stations on fire.

Federal prosecutors said each of those cases involved charges carrying a minimum sentence of five years and a possible maximum of 20 years. Those announcements described criminal allegations, not convictions. The outcome of each case must be determined through the court process.

What this means for Tesla owners

The FBI warning is relevant even when a car is parked away from a Tesla showroom. Owners should treat threats against a specific vehicle, charging site or business as a potential safety issue rather than as ordinary online political argument.

  1. Do not confront a suspected vandal. Move away and call 911 if there is an immediate threat, fire, weapon or attempt to enter a restricted area.
  2. Preserve evidence safely. Photograph damage only from a safe location. Save relevant security-camera footage, messages and timestamps without approaching a dangerous scene.
  3. Report specific threats. The FBI listed threats naming Tesla properties, attempts to bypass security, unusual photography of security equipment or personnel, surveillance and attempted entry as reportable warning signs.
  4. Contact insurance and Tesla or site management. A damaged vehicle, charging stall or building may require separate police, insurer and property-owner reports. Do not move a vehicle if doing so could destroy evidence unless emergency personnel direct you to move it.
  5. Use official reporting channels. Emergencies go to 911. The FBI also listed 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324) and tips.fbi.gov for threat information.

Owners should also avoid reposting unverified claims that identify a protest group or an individual as responsible. A political slogan, a protest sign or a social-media post does not by itself prove who committed an attack.

How to describe the story accurately

Several common summaries overstate what investigators have established:

Avoid saying More accurate wording
“Tesla protests caused the attacks.” Protests and criminal attacks occurred during the same period; a causal link has not been established by the FBI’s public alert.
“The FBI proved the attacks were coordinated.” The FBI said known incidents appeared to have been carried out by lone offenders.
“All Tesla protesters were involved in vandalism.” Organizers said their demonstrations were peaceful and opposed property destruction.
“Every incident was domestic terrorism.” Officials used that phrase in public statements, but individual cases still depend on specific criminal charges and court findings.
“There were [a specific number of] attacks nationwide.” The FBI publicly identified incidents in at least nine states but did not provide a complete national total in its PSA.

The wording is more than a technicality. Tesla owners, employees and protest participants can be affected by the reporting, while an unsupported claim of collective responsibility can wrongly attach violent crimes to people who attended lawful demonstrations.

What remains unanswered

The FBI’s announcement did not provide a complete incident list, a nationwide total or a finding that Tesla Takedown coordinated the attacks. It also did not say that every person involved in the incidents acted alone as a matter of proven fact; it described the bureau’s assessment of the known attacks at that point.

For that reason, the responsible account is narrower: Tesla properties and vehicles were targeted in multiple states by arsonists, shooters and vandals, while anti-Musk protests were taking place. Some suspects have faced federal charges, and at least one Las Vegas defendant has pleaded guilty. The broader relationship between the attacks, online rhetoric and the protest movement requires case-by-case evidence.

FAQ

Were the Tesla protests responsible for the vandalism and arson attacks?

That has not been established. Tesla Takedown organizers said their demonstrations were peaceful and opposed violence and property destruction. The FBI said the known criminal incidents appeared to involve lone offenders, but it did not announce that every case was unrelated to the protest movement.

How many Tesla attacks were there nationwide?

The FBI said incidents had occurred in at least nine states, but its March 21, 2025, alert did not publish a complete nationwide incident count.

What happened at the Las Vegas Tesla facility?

Authorities said an attacker used Molotov cocktails and a .30-caliber AR-style firearm at a Tesla collision business near 6260 West Badura Avenue at about 2:45 a.m. on March 18, 2025. Five Tesla vehicles were damaged or destroyed, and “Resist” was painted on the building.

What should I do if I see a threat against a Tesla location?

Do not investigate or confront anyone. Call 911 for an immediate emergency. For non-emergency threat information, the FBI listed 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324) and tips.fbi.gov. Preserve messages, links and timestamps if doing so is safe.

The Bottom Line

The 2025 Tesla violence story combines two separate developments: political protests aimed at Elon Musk and criminal attacks on Tesla vehicles, facilities and charging sites. The FBI reported incidents in at least nine states and said the known attacks appeared to involve lone offenders. Until investigators or courts establish a specific connection, coverage should not attribute the arson and vandalism to Tesla Takedown or to protesters as a group.
