Zelenska didn’t buy a Bugatti hypercar for $4.8M: the claim is false. Bugatti said Olena Zelenska was not its customer, the named Paris dealership denied the sale and alleged invoice, and CBS News reported that the supporting salesman video was created using artificial intelligence.

The rumor combined a real newly announced Bugatti Tourbillon with a fabricated purchase narrative involving American taxpayer or Ukraine-aid money. The price varied across versions of the story, appearing as roughly €4.5 million, $4.5 million, or $4.8 million.

Key takeaways

  • Bugatti spokesperson Nicole Auger said in 2024, “Mrs. Zelenska is not a Bugatti customer.”
  • The Car Lovers Group, which operated the Bugatti Paris dealership named in the story, denied that the sale or invoice existed on July 2, 2024.
  • The alleged invoice contained missing legal details, an incorrect vehicle price, inconsistent option descriptions, and outdated graphics.
  • CBS News reported in 2024 that the alleged salesman video was created using artificial intelligence and had visible manipulation indicators.
  • The rumor began on a newly created website on July 1, 2024, before spreading through social media, Russian state media, and pro-Kremlin channels.
  • The Bugatti Tourbillon is a real hyper sports car unveiled by Bugatti on June 24, 2024, but the alleged Zelenska purchase was not real.

Did Zelenska buy a $4.8 million Bugatti?

No. Olena Zelenska did not buy or preorder a $4.8 million Bugatti hypercar. Bugatti said she was not a customer, while the named Paris dealership denied the transaction and called the alleged invoice fabricated. The supporting salesman video was also reported as AI-generated or digitally manipulated.

The viral story used several prices, including about €4.5 million, $4.5 million, and $4.8 million. Those differences do not change the central finding: there is no verified purchase, preorder, or evidence that American taxpayer money or Ukraine aid paid for a Bugatti for Zelenska. PolitiFact’s review of the claim included a direct statement from Bugatti’s spokesperson.

What evidence was used to support the Bugatti story?

The allegation relied mainly on three items: an alleged invoice, a video purporting to show a Bugatti salesman, and a story published by an obscure website. None survived direct verification.

Evidence in the viral story What it purported to show What verification found Assessment
Invoice naming “Mrs. Olena Zelenska” A preorder for a Bugatti Tourbillon in Paris The dealership identified missing mandatory legal details, an incorrect price, inconsistent option descriptions, and outdated graphics. Fabricated document
Video of an alleged salesman A dealership employee confirming the sale CBS News reported AI creation and noted limited head and neck movement and infrequent blinking. Manipulated or AI-generated video
Vérité Cachée article A June visit to France led to an order for the first of 250 planned cars The site was newly created, did not identify its editorial team, and lacked normal contact information. Unreliable origin, not transaction proof
Direct Bugatti and dealership statements Whether the named buyer and seller could confirm the transaction Bugatti said Zelenska was not its customer; the Car Lovers Group denied both the sale and invoice. Strong direct evidence that the claim was false

Was the Bugatti invoice real?

No. The Car Lovers Group, the company operating the Bugatti Paris dealership named in the allegation, issued a denial on July 2, 2024. The group stated: “The Car Lovers Group strongly denies both the existence of this transaction and, consequently, the existence of this invoice.”

The dealership also listed specific defects in the document. The alleged invoice lacked mandatory legal information, used the wrong vehicle price, described options inaccurately and inconsistently, and displayed outdated graphics. Those are document-authentication problems, not minor formatting errors.

The dealership said it filed a criminal complaint concerning forgery, use of forgeries, identity usurpation, and defamation. The Car Lovers Group’s July 2 press release provides the dealership’s account and denial.

The manufacturer’s statement is important because the alleged transaction concerned a highly distinctive, limited-production model and named a specific buyer. The dealership denial and manufacturer statement independently reject the two sides of the claimed sale: the supposed seller and the vehicle’s manufacturer.

Was the Bugatti salesman video a deepfake?

The alleged Bugatti salesman video was not reliable evidence of a purchase. CBS News reported that artificial intelligence was used to create the video and identified physical irregularities including unusually limited head and neck movement, rare blinking, and minimal natural motion.

Lead Stories reported that three AI-detection tools also flagged the purported testimony as inauthentic. AI-detection tools are not conclusive by themselves, but their findings aligned with the dealership’s direct denial and the invoice’s visible inconsistencies. CBS News’ investigation of the manipulated video describes both the video indicators and how the clip spread.

Where did the Zelenska Bugatti rumor start?

The claim appears to have first surfaced on July 1, 2024, on a newly created French-language website called Vérité Cachée. The website alleged that Zelenska attended a private Bugatti preview during a June visit to France, became interested in the car, and ordered the first of 250 planned vehicles.

Lead Stories reported that Vérité Cachée did not identify an editorial team or provide ordinary contact information, and that the site had been created only days before the claim went viral. A site’s age or lack of transparency does not automatically prove every article false, but those features make it a poor primary source for a multimillion-dollar purchase involving a public figure.

Researchers cited by CBS News linked the site to CopyCop, described as a Russian disinformation network that uses sham websites and AI tools to publish false claims. Wired reported that the allegation moved from an obscure site to widespread online attention in roughly 24 hours. Lead Stories’ fact check traces the website, invoice, and video problems.

How widely did the false claim spread?

CBS News reported that the manipulated video and related posts accumulated more than 20 million views across X, Telegram, and TikTok in 2024. The figure is CBS News’ reported total, not an independently verified tally from the platforms.

The allegation was amplified by Russian state media, pro-Kremlin Telegram channels, social-media accounts, and websites presenting themselves as legitimate news outlets. High view counts show how far the claim traveled; they do not validate the invoice, video, or purchase.

Is the Bugatti Tourbillon real?

Yes. The Bugatti Tourbillon is a real hyper sports car, but its existence does not authenticate the Zelenska purchase story. Bugatti’s official press release dated June 24, 2024, described the Tourbillon’s world-premiere events at the company’s Molsheim birthplace.

The Tourbillon has an all-new V16 engine and an electrified powertrain. A newly announced, exceptionally expensive car provided believable details for a fabricated rumor: readers could recognize the model, the Paris setting, and the luxury price. The real vehicle and the alleged customer transaction are separate claims. Bugatti’s official Tourbillon announcement confirms the car’s launch without supporting any Zelenska order.

What should readers conclude about the $4.8 million claim?

The claim that Zelenska spent American aid money on a $4.8 million Bugatti is false. The alleged invoice was rejected by the dealership, the manufacturer said Zelenska was not a customer, and the video presented as seller testimony was manipulated. No reliable original source confirmed an order, payment, or preorder.

The real Bugatti Tourbillon should not be confused with the fake sale. Readers looking for a physical reminder of the vehicle can find documented Bugatti Tourbillon scale-model products, including collectible models related to the real car. A scale model is a separate collectible and is not evidence that Zelenska bought the full-size hypercar.
