Yes—but it is a successor in role, not a mechanical clone. Yamaha used the four-cylinder YZF-R6 in World Supersport through the 2024 season, then entered the three-cylinder YZF-R9 as its “Next Generation” machine for 2025. The R9 takes over Yamaha’s middleweight supersport position with a larger, torque-focused engine, a dedicated aluminum chassis and electronics designed for both road riding and track use.
What Yamaha has officially confirmed
Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA announced the all-new 2025 YZF-R9 on October 9, 2024. The US announcement described it as “a new breed of performance street bike” and said dealer arrivals would begin in March 2025 at a $12,499 US MSRP.

Yamaha’s Japanese corporate announcement said the 2025 model was planned for North America, Europe and other markets, with Japan scheduled from spring 2025. Exact equipment, pricing and arrival timing can vary by market.
Why the R9 is considered the R6 replacement
Yamaha’s racing announcement provides the clearest evidence. It states that the 600cc, four-cylinder YZF-R6 contested World Supersport from its launch in 1999 through the 2024 season, and identifies the R9 as Yamaha’s “Next Generation” machine for 2025.

That establishes a succession of Yamaha’s WorldSSP and middleweight supersport role. It does not mean the R9 continues the R6’s engine layout, dimensions or high-revving character. The R9 changes displacement, cylinder count and the balance between track focus and everyday usability.

Engine character: torque replaces the R6’s rev-focused identity
The R9’s CP3 engine has 890cc and three cylinders, compared with the R6’s 600cc four-cylinder configuration. Yamaha’s stated goal is broad, usable performance rather than reproducing the R6’s particular high-revving feel. Riders should therefore expect stronger midrange drive and a different response when exiting corners, while accepting that the R9 will not sound or build power exactly like the R6.

Chassis: a purpose-built supersport platform
The R9 is not simply an R-series bodywork package around an existing street chassis. Yamaha specifies a dedicated aluminum supersport chassis with a gravity-cast Deltabox frame. Its suspension package comprises a fully adjustable 43mm KYB fork and an adjustable KYB rear shock, giving owners a setup range for road use, rider weight and track conditions.

Electronics: modern assistance without limiting the bike to beginners
A six-axis inertial measurement unit allows the R9’s rider aids to account for lean angle and changing conditions. The package includes traction, slide, lift and braking controls that operate with lean sensitivity, plus launch control and Yamaha Ride Control. These systems are intended to help manage the R9’s performance; their presence does not turn it into a low-performance motorcycle.

Can the R9 be ridden on the street and track?
Street use
Yamaha positions the R9 as a performance street bike with street-friendly ergonomics and a broad power delivery. Its 32.7-inch seat, 3.7-gallon tank and estimated 48 mpg figure are relevant to normal road use, while the rider-control systems add adjustable electronic assistance for changing surfaces and weather.
Track use
The R9’s dedicated frame, adjustable KYB suspension, Brembo Stylema calipers, aerodynamic winglets and lean-sensitive controls provide a foundation for track riding. A track setup still requires correct suspension sag, tire pressures, control settings and rider preparation; the standard motorcycle is track-capable, not automatically optimized for every circuit or rider.

What the R9 replacement means for R6 owners
- The mission continues: Yamaha retains a middleweight supersport and WorldSSP presence under the R9 name.
- The power delivery changes: the 890cc triple emphasizes torque and flexibility instead of duplicating the R6’s four-cylinder, high-revving behavior.
- The road brief is broader: Yamaha explicitly combines track capability with street accessibility and confidence-oriented handling.
- The platform is new: the R9 uses its own aluminum supersport chassis and updated electronics rather than being a direct continuation of the R6 hardware.
Bottom line for prospective buyers
The Yamaha YZF-R9 is the confirmed successor to the YZF-R6’s middleweight supersport and WorldSSP role beginning with the 2025 season. Calling it an R6 replacement is accurate when discussing Yamaha’s market and racing position; calling it an identical replacement would be misleading. The R9 trades the R6’s 600cc four-cylinder formula for an 890cc CP3 triple, more torque, a dedicated chassis and a wider street-to-track brief.
