The claim traces to a July 2025 online article that says development was confirmed, but the Yamaha announcements reviewed describe updates to the current R1 and R1M, plus a 2026 color change and a limited anniversary model in Japan. No launch date, engine redesign, transmission change or feature list for a new-generation bike is established by those announcements.
Where the next-generation claim comes from
The headline echoes a July 2025 article titled along the lines of “The Next-Gen YZF-R1 Has Been Confirmed.” That article goes on to ask what new features to expect and when the new bike will arrive. Those are questions the article raises, not answers Yamaha has given. The piece does not link to an official Yamaha statement confirming development, and its predictions about features, pricing and timing should be treated as speculation.
Readers searching for this story are usually looking for one of three things: whether a new-generation R1 exists, what changed on the current bike, and what it costs. The sections below address each in that order.

Japan, 2025 model year: updates to the R1 and R1M
On March 14, 2025, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announced the YZF-R1M ABS and YZF-R1 ABS for Japan. The engine is described as a 997 cm³ liquid-cooled, four-stroke, DOHC inline-four with a crossplane crankshaft. Both models gained winglets and a new seat surface. The standard R1 also received a new KYB front suspension with SDF damping and Brembo Stylema front calipers paired with a radial master cylinder. Yamaha presented these as changes to existing models.
Japan, 2026 model year: a new color and a 70th Anniversary Edition
Yamaha’s Japanese 2026 announcement covers a new color for the YZF-R1 ABS and a 70th Anniversary Edition limited to 200 units. The release gives April 17, 2026 as the release date for the color model and January 30, 2026 for the anniversary edition. It again lists the engine as 997 cm³. Both models are sold as Japan-exclusive bikes through Yamaha Sales Partners (YSP), so they do not indicate what is sold elsewhere.

United States, 2026 model year: prices and dealer timing
Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. published its lineup announcement on November 4, 2025. It lists the 2026 YZF-R1 at a $19,199 MSRP and the 2026 YZF-R1M at a $27,899 MSRP, with dealer arrivals beginning in December 2025. The same release states that the remaining R-Series models return unchanged for 2026. These figures are U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail prices from that announcement. They are not a guarantee of current dealer stock or of prices after the model year changes.
Why the confirmation claim does not hold
Three things separate what Yamaha announced from what the headline implies. First, every official release reviewed concerns the current R1 or R1M, either as a model-year update, a color change or a limited edition. Second, none of them names a new generation, a development program or a future release window. Third, the only quotable material is corporate press-release text. No named Yamaha executive was found making a statement about a next-generation R1 in the sources reviewed.

The newest Yamaha announcements reviewed are dated 2026. A later model-year lineup, if Yamaha has issued one, falls outside what this article covers. Until Yamaha publishes a dedicated announcement, the accurate statement is that the current R1 and R1M are the models on sale, and their details are the ones listed below.

What to check before you act on this
- Confirm the country. Japanese releases cover Japan-exclusive editions and do not state U.S. or European pricing.
- Confirm the model year. The U.S. prices above apply to the 2026 model year only.
- Confirm the variant. The R1M carries a higher price in the U.S. and is the only one of the two listed with the same 2026 U.S. MSRP difference of $8,700 over the R1 ($27,899 minus $19,199).
- Check the dealer. Official prices and arrival dates are not a substitute for current stock or dealer-set pricing.
If you already own an R1
Yamaha’s official product page lists its YZF-R1 fender eliminator as compatible with R1 model years 2015 through 2026. Check the page against your year and model before ordering, because fitment is listed by model year rather than by variant.
What would change this picture
A genuine next-generation announcement would come from Yamaha’s own press channels in the relevant market, with a named model, an official release date and specifications attributed to Yamaha. Until such a release exists, articles that list expected features, price ranges or launch windows for a new R1 are repeating speculation rather than reporting confirmed news.
For now, the R1 and R1M sold in each market are the bikes to compare, using the market, model year and price data above.
