What is Yamaha Y/AI?
Y/AI is a futuristic race-bike concept designed by Yamaha Motor for Tokyo Override, a science-fiction anime set in Tokyo 100 years in the future. Yamaha later built a full-scale concept model and displayed it at Motor Expo 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand, during the event’s November 29–December 10 run.
That makes Y/AI quite different from a normal motorcycle prototype. Yamaha has not announced production specifications, a price, a release date, or a road-legal version. There is also no evidence that the company developed a retail illuminated-tire system for the bike.
The glowing wheels are the visual centerpiece
The most eye-catching feature is the wheel treatment. Design coverage describes Y/AI’s wheels as spokeless and semi-transparent, with blue illumination that makes them appear to glow as the motorcycle moves.
Images can make the effect look like a set of luminous tires, but that is not the same thing as a documented production tire technology. Yamaha’s material establishes the design concept and the full-scale show model; it does not establish a road-approved lighting system, a production wheel construction, or a retail motorcycle fitted with glowing tires.

The rest of the design follows the same minimalist direction. The bodywork is reduced to a narrow, futuristic silhouette, while the powertrain appears visually concealed within the structure between the wheels. Instead of displaying a conventional engine, fuel tank, and frame in familiar motorcycle proportions, Y/AI presents the mechanical core as part of a single sculptural form.
That visual language is effective for a fictional future race bike, but it should not be read as a specification sheet. Yamaha has not published a production motor, battery, output figure, range, top speed, suspension layout, or homologation plan for Y/AI.

Tokyo Override imagines Tokyo a century from now, in a society where artificial intelligence is integrated into everyday life and much of urban living is automated. The story follows characters connected to a motorcycle-riding outcast group, giving motorcycles a larger role than simple background transportation.
Yamaha’s involvement went well beyond licensing a logo or supplying a familiar bike for an animated scene. According to Yamaha, the company supplied 3D data, images, and recorded sounds from the YZF-R1 and VMAX. It also helped with the fictional world’s ideas about future mobility and racing, supervised motorcycle-related elements, and designed Y/AI as the future race machine ridden by the character Amarin.
That process explains why Y/AI feels related to a real Yamaha motorcycle while remaining far more radical than anything in the company’s current showroom lineup. The concept is an original design made for the story’s future—not a modified R1 hidden beneath anime-style bodywork.

A futuristic bike built around human control
The most interesting part of Y/AI is not necessarily the blue lighting. It is the contradiction at the center of the design.

Tokyo Override is set in a world shaped by artificial intelligence, yet Y/AI’s rider is characterized as someone who insists on piloting the motorcycle herself rather than surrendering control to AI. Yamaha’s later design discussion says the team focused on preserving sensations that matter to a human rider.
One example is the use of a mechanical spring setup rather than electronic suspension control. The stated goal was to retain a more direct, physical connection between rider and machine. In other words, the concept imagines advanced technology without treating automation as the only desirable future.
That gives Y/AI a stronger design rationale than “futuristic bike with glowing wheels.” Its appearance communicates a highly automated world, while its rider relationship argues for mechanical feedback, physical sensation, and deliberate human control.
How the YZF-R1 and VMAX fit into the project
The two principal real-world Yamaha references behind the anime are very different motorcycles:

| Motorcycle | Role in the project | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| YZF-R1 | Real Yamaha supersport motorcycle whose 3D data, imagery, and sound were supplied for the production. | It is not the production version of Y/AI and does not come with Y/AI’s glowing wheels. |
| VMAX | Real Yamaha muscle cruiser that also contributed data, images, and recorded sounds to the anime. | It is not the basis for a retail Y/AI conversion kit or a Y/AI production model. |
Yamaha continues to identify the YZF-R1 separately as a real supersport model. That separation matters: the R1 is a production motorcycle, while Y/AI is a concept designed inside the fictional world of Tokyo Override.
Can you buy the Yamaha Y/AI?
No—not as a production motorcycle. Yamaha’s available announcements describe Y/AI as a concept model and an original race bike created for the anime. They do not announce retail availability, pricing, production numbers, road certification, or an order process.
The full-scale machine shown in Bangkok was an exhibition model. “Full-scale” means it was built at approximately motorcycle size; it does not mean Yamaha put the concept into series production.
It is also safer to call the feature “blue-lit wheels” or “glowing-looking wheels” rather than claim that Y/AI has commercially available glowing tires. The published information does not establish how a production version would generate the effect, how it would meet road-lighting rules, or whether the displayed concept was rideable.

A physical alternative for Yamaha superbike fans
If Y/AI sends you looking for a physical Yamaha superbike collectible, the Yamaha YZF-R1 model kit from Tamiya is a related option based on one of the real Yamaha motorcycles behind the project. Tamiya documents a 1/12 plastic assembly kit, item 14073, with reproduced bodywork, a detailed liquid-cooled four-cylinder engine, plated frame and swingarm parts, an interchangeable seat cowl, and a racing stand.
This is an adjacent product, not a Y/AI replica and not a Tokyo Override kit. Availability, seller, price, and U.S. ordering options can change, so those details should be checked before purchase.

Why the concept matters
Y/AI is notable because Yamaha treated the anime as a design and world-building project rather than merely a place to insert existing motorcycles. The company brought production-bike data and sound into the series, then created a machine that could represent a radically different future of racing.
Its design also avoids a simple “AI replaces the rider” message. The bike belongs to an automated future, but the character who rides it values the act of riding. The mechanical spring detail reinforces that idea: even in an imagined era of advanced control systems, the designers wanted room for physical feedback and human choice.
