The Yamaha YZF-R9 is no longer a speculative replacement for the R6. Yamaha announced the production motorcycle on October 9, 2024, began North American deliveries in March 2025, and now lists the R9 in its U.S. catalog as a 2027 model.
Its formula is different from the old R6: an 890cc CP3 inline-three engine, a dedicated aluminum Deltabox frame, fully adjustable KYB suspension, Brembo Stylema brakes, functional winglets and a substantial electronics package. Here is what Yamaha has actually confirmed, including the details that vary between U.S., European and Japanese specifications.

Yamaha has not announced a major mechanical redesign for the 2027 model. The currently published figures remain broadly consistent with the earlier R9 specifications.
Engine and performance
The R9 uses Yamaha’s CP3 engine, not the four-cylinder engine from the R1. In U.S. and European technical material it is described as an 890cc liquid-cooled, DOHC inline three-cylinder. Yamaha Japan lists the displacement as 888cm³; that difference reflects market-specific documentation and rounding rather than a fundamentally different engine.
| Specification | Confirmed detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | Liquid-cooled DOHC inline three-cylinder CP3 |
| Bore × stroke | 78.0 × 62.1 mm |
| Compression ratio | 11.5:1 |
| Fueling | Fuel injection with Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) |
| Transmission | Six-speed |
| Clutch | Multiplate wet assist-and-slipper clutch |
| Final drive | Chain |
| Fuel capacity | 3.7 U.S. gallons |
| European output | 119 PS at 10,000 rpm |
| European torque | 93.0 Nm at 7,000 rpm |
Yamaha says the R9 receives a model-specific ECU calibration, revised gear ratios and a tuned airbox. The goal is a broader, more torquey delivery than a conventional high-revving four-cylinder supersport. Yamaha’s published European figures are 87.5 kW, or 119 PS, at 10,000 rpm and 93.0 Nm at 7,000 rpm. Power and emissions figures can vary by market, so those numbers should not automatically be presented as universal U.S. specifications.
Dedicated chassis rather than a simple fairing conversion
The R9 uses a dedicated aluminum Deltabox gravity-cast frame. Yamaha describes it as the lightest aluminum frame used on one of its supersport models. The company also cites near-50/50 weight distribution.
That matters because the R9 is not simply an MT-09 with bodywork. Although it shares the CP3 engine family with other Yamaha models, the R9 has its own frame, suspension setup, riding position, aerodynamics and electronic calibration.
Suspension
Both ends use fully adjustable KYB components:
- Front: 43mm KYB inverted fork with preload, high- and low-speed compression, and rebound adjustment.
- Rear: KYB single shock with preload, high- and low-speed compression, and rebound damping adjustment.
- Front travel: 4.7 inches.
- Rear travel: 4.6 inches.
Brakes and tires
The front brake system combines dual 320mm hydraulic discs with Brembo Stylema monoblock calipers and a Brembo radial master cylinder. A 220mm hydraulic rear disc completes the system. ABS is standard.

- Low-profile tail tidy that eliminates the bulky stock fender

| Position | Equipment |
|---|---|
| Front brake | Dual 320mm discs, Brembo Stylema calipers, radial master cylinder |
| Rear brake | 220mm hydraulic disc |
| Front tire | 120/70ZR17 Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22F |
| Rear tire | 180/55ZR17 Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22R |
The motorcycle includes a rear-ABS-off function for track use. That is not the same as a universal ABS delete. Yamaha’s confirmation specifically concerns the rear system; it should not be described as permission to disable every braking aid in every riding situation.

These are the published U.S.-specification dimensions:
| Measurement | U.S. figure |
|---|---|
| Wet weight | 430 lb |
| Seat height | 32.7 in |
| Wheelbase | 55.9 in |
| Length × width × height | 81.5 × 27.8 × 46.5 in |
| Rake | 22.6 degrees |
| Trail | 3.7 in |
| Ground clearance | 5.5 in |
| Estimated fuel economy | 48 mpg |
European documents list approximately 195 kg wet weight, an 830mm seat height, a 1,420mm wheelbase and a 14-liter tank. Those small discrepancies are generally unit conversions and market documentation differences. They do not indicate a fundamentally different chassis.
R9 electronics explained
The R9’s electronics are managed through a six-axis inertial measurement unit and Yamaha Ride Control (YRC). The confirmed systems include:
- Four-level Power Delivery Mode (PWR).
- Nine-level lean-sensitive Traction Control System (TCS).
- Three-level Slide Control System (SCS).
- Three-level Lift Control System (LIF).
- Lean-sensitive Brake Control System (BC).
- Two-level Engine Brake Management (EBM).
- Back Slip Regulator (BSR).
- Launch Control (LC).
- Yamaha Variable Speed Limiter (YVSL).
- Third-generation Yamaha quickshifter.
- Cruise control.
- Rear-ABS-off capability.
YRC provides preset and customizable settings. The systems do not all have the same number of adjustment levels, and they do not all behave identically when switched off. Yamaha says the intervention levels can be adjusted and that listed aids can be disabled where permitted by the system. It is therefore misleading to describe the R9 as having one master switch that completely removes all electronic assistance.
Display, navigation and connectivity
A full-color 5-inch TFT display provides four street display themes, a dedicated track theme and vehicle-data screens. The revised handlebar switchgear controls the display and riding settings.

Smartphone connectivity is provided through Yamaha’s free Y-Connect app. When paired with an aftermarket Bluetooth headset, the system supports calls, messages and music. Turn-by-turn navigation is available through the Garmin StreetCross app.
The Bluetooth headset is not included with the motorcycle. It is an additional aftermarket accessory requirement for the headset-based call, message and music functions.
Aerodynamics and styling
The R9 uses Yamaha’s R-series M-shaped front duct, angled LED position lights, a tail wing and front winglets inspired by MotoGP development.

The winglets are functional rather than purely decorative. Yamaha says they are intended to increase front-end stability and downforce while limiting aerodynamic drag. However, Yamaha has not published a simple standalone downforce figure in the production announcement. Claims assigning a specific number of pounds or kilograms of downforce need separate test data.
Full LED lighting is standard, along with the winglets, cruise control, quickshifter, Brembo front braking hardware, adjustable KYB suspension and the IMU-based rider-aid package.

Yamaha Japan announced a blue 2026 YZF-R9 ABS for Japanese release on May 15, 2026. Japan also announced a 70th Anniversary Edition, limited to 200 units, with sales beginning January 30, 2026.
The anniversary motorcycle uses white-and-red graphics inspired by Yamaha’s 1964 RD56 world-championship machine. Yamaha’s U.S. material describes the version as having throwback white-and-red speed-block graphics, gold tuning-fork emblems and an anniversary badge. Availability and equipment should be checked against the local Yamaha catalog because color and special-edition offerings are market dependent.
2027
Yamaha’s current U.S. catalog lists the standard R9 as a 2027 model with a $12,499 starting MSRP. The published specification sheet continues to show an 890cc engine, 430-lb wet weight, 32.7-inch seat height, 55.9-inch wheelbase and estimated 48-mpg fuel economy. Yamaha’s public information does not identify a major mechanical redesign for this model year.

Common claims that need correcting
| Claim | What Yamaha has confirmed |
|---|---|
| The R9 is still only a rumor. | Incorrect. Yamaha announced the production motorcycle in October 2024 and now lists it as a 2027 U.S. model. |
| It has a 900cc engine. | That is a casual approximation. Official U.S. and European documents identify it as 890cc; Yamaha Japan lists 888cm³. |
| It uses the R1’s four-cylinder engine. | Incorrect. The R9 uses Yamaha’s CP3 inline-three engine. |
| The winglets are just styling. | Incorrect. Yamaha describes them as functional aerodynamic devices. |
| There is no ABS-off capability. | Incomplete. Yamaha confirms a rear-ABS-off function, primarily for track riding. |
| $12,499 is the all-in U.S. price. | Incorrect. It is the starting MSRP. Yamaha’s current U.S. page lists a separate $700 destination charge, with taxes and other charges extra. |
| An MT-09 recall automatically applies to the R9. | Unsupported. Owners should check recall coverage by VIN rather than infer it from the shared engine family. |
Market details also require care. Power figures, colors, emissions equipment, prices and model-year labels can differ between the U.S., Europe and Japan. A specification should identify its source market instead of combining figures from several Yamaha catalogs into one supposedly universal sheet.

FAQ
Is the Yamaha R9 a real production motorcycle?
Yes. Yamaha officially announced the production YZF-R9 on October 9, 2024, with North American dealer arrivals planned for March 2025. Yamaha’s U.S. catalog now lists it as a 2027 model.
How much does the Yamaha R9 cost in the U.S.?
Yamaha’s current U.S. catalog lists a starting MSRP of $12,499 for the 2027 R9. A $700 destination charge is listed separately, and taxes, title, registration, dealer preparation and accessories are additional.
What engine does the Yamaha R9 use?
It uses Yamaha’s 890cc CP3 liquid-cooled DOHC inline-three engine in U.S. and European documentation. Yamaha Japan lists the engine as 888cm³. It is not the R1’s four-cylinder engine.
Can the Yamaha R9’s ABS be turned off?
The R9 has a confirmed rear-ABS-off function intended for track use. That should not be interpreted as a complete, universal ABS delete or as proof that every braking aid can be disabled in every situation.
The Bottom Line
The Yamaha R9 is a production supersport built around the CP3 inline-three engine rather than an R1-derived four-cylinder. Its strongest confirmed features are the dedicated Deltabox chassis, fully adjustable KYB suspension, Brembo Stylema brakes, functional aerodynamics and unusually comprehensive IMU-controlled electronics. For U.S. buyers, the current reference point is the 2027 model at a $12,499 starting MSRP before the $700 destination charge and other purchase costs. Check the local Yamaha catalog for final pricing, colors, emissions equipment and output figures.
