Xiaomi’s YU7 is a credible new rival to Tesla’s Model Y in China: it arrived in 2025 at lower launch list prices than the Model Y versions reported at the time, and Xiaomi says the YU7 Series had reached 232,000 cumulative deliveries by April 30, 2026. That is evidence of competitive scale, not proof that the YU7 caused Tesla sales to fall. The comparison also needs a date attached: Xiaomi added 2026 YU7 variants, so the original launch prices and specifications are no longer a current lineup snapshot.
Why Xiaomi’s YU7 matters to Tesla in China
Unveiled on May 22, 2025, the YU7 was Xiaomi’s first SUV and was positioned directly against the China-market Tesla Model Y. Xiaomi described it as a mid-to-large all-electric SUV, with a 4,999 mm length, 1,996 mm width, 1,600 mm height and 3,000 mm wheelbase. Xiaomi’s debut announcement
The competitive threat is straightforward: Xiaomi entered a high-profile vehicle category with a large SUV, aggressive launch pricing and specifications that looked strong on paper. Xiaomi’s reported delivery total later showed the model had reached meaningful scale. But competition and displacement are not the same thing. The sources available here do not establish a matched, causal analysis showing that YU7 sales produced a decline in Model Y sales.
What the 2025 launch comparison showed
At the June 26, 2025 launch, CnEVPost reported three YU7 trims and the China Model Y prices then used for comparison. These are launch-era list prices, not current quotes, transaction prices or a statement of today’s available trims. CnEVPost’s June 26, 2025 launch report

On that dated comparison, the original YU7 Standard was RMB 10,000 below the reported Model Y RWD price, and the YU7 Max was RMB 33,600 above the RWD but RMB 16,400 below the Long Range AWD. The original YU7 Pro price sat between the two Model Y prices. Price alone does not make these exact equivalents: trim equipment, drivetrain, incentives, delivery timing and ownership costs can change the comparison.
Range and performance claims need their test-cycle labels
CnEVPost’s launch report listed the original YU7 Standard and Pro with 96.3 kWh LFP batteries and the Max with a 101.7 kWh ternary lithium battery. It reported CLTC ranges of 835 km, 770 km and 760 km, respectively. The same report gave 593 km for the Model Y RWD and 719 km for the Long Range AWD. These are CLTC figures, not independently measured real-world driving ranges; they should not be read as a guarantee of distance in everyday conditions.

The launch report also contrasted Xiaomi’s claimed 800-volt electrical system with a 400-volt system for the Model Y and presented model-specific acceleration and battery specifications. Such headline figures are useful only when the trim, test method and conditions match. Charging speed in actual use also depends on the vehicle, charger, battery temperature and charging curve, not voltage architecture alone.
At the launch, Xiaomi founder, chairman and CEO Lei Jun said the “the Xiaomi SUV outperforms the Tesla SUV in every aspect.” That is a promotional claim from the company’s chief executive, not a neutral finding supported by independent testing. “Every aspect” is especially broad: a fair assessment would need to define the versions compared and evaluate range, charging, interior space, driver assistance, service, price and ownership experience separately. The YU7 lineup changed in 2026
Xiaomi’s Q1 2026 report describes two further lineup developments, so neither should be folded into the 2025 Standard, Pro and Max figures:
- New Standard: starting price RMB 233,500, with a company-stated CLTC range of 643 km.
- YU7 GT: launched May 21, 2026 at RMB 389,900, with a 101.7 kWh battery, company-stated CLTC range of 705 km and 0–100 km/h acceleration in 2.92 seconds.
The figures are company-reported specifications for different versions. They are not a direct update to the original Standard’s 835 km CLTC claim, and the lower-priced 2026 Standard’s stated range cannot be compared as if it were the original trim. Xiaomi’s report also says the YU7 Series reached 232,000 cumulative deliveries in its first 10 months after launch, as of April 30, 2026, citing CPCA. What the evidence does—and does not—say about Tesla
The scale of reported YU7 deliveries supports the conclusion that Xiaomi established a substantial competing product in China. It does not show how many buyers switched from Tesla, would otherwise have bought a Model Y, or entered the electric-SUV market for another reason. Establishing displacement would require comparable Model Y and YU7 sales over the same periods, with consistent definitions and enough context to account for price changes, incentives, supply and broader market conditions.
Market conditions were also difficult: Xiaomi’s 2026 interim report said mainland China passenger-vehicle retail volume fell 20% year over year in the first half of 2026. That provides context for the competitive environment, but it does not identify which brand gained or lost share. Xiaomi 2026 interim report

The same interim report said the YU7 Series ranked first among one-year major pure-electric vehicles in the July 2026 China Vehicle Value Retention Ratio Research Report, with an 82.8% one-year value-retention ratio, as reported by Xiaomi and attributed to the China Automobile Dealers Association and Jingzhengu. How to make a fair YU7–Model Y comparison
For a purchase decision or a claim about which vehicle is better, pin down the specific versions and date first. Then compare the factors that affect both cost and daily use:
- Price: use the same date, currency and market, and distinguish list prices from incentives or transaction prices.
- Size and use: compare exterior dimensions and wheelbase, then check cabin, cargo and seating needs in person where possible.
- Drivetrain and battery: match drive layout, battery capacity and chemistry by trim.
- Range: compare the same test cycle, and separate manufacturer-reported ratings from independent or real-world measurements.
- Charging: look beyond voltage architecture to charging rate, charging curve, compatible infrastructure and access on the routes you use.
- Ownership: verify warranty terms, service access, delivery timing and total cost for your location and intended use.
