It is designed to combine cruise speeds above 400 knots with vertical lift and the ability to operate from unprepared surfaces—but those are targets, not demonstrated flight results. DARPA says flight testing is planned for early 2028.
What is the X-76?
The X-76 is Bell’s designation for an experimental aircraft in SPRINT, short for Speed and Runway Independent Technologies. DARPA and U.S. Special Operations Command established the program to demonstrate aircraft technologies and integrated concepts that can deliver high speed without dependence on conventional runways. The X-76 is a proof-of-concept demonstrator, intended to validate technology that could be scaled to military aircraft of different sizes—not a production aircraft announced for procurement.

DARPA’s program timeline says SPRINT entered Phase 1 on November 1, 2023. Aurora Flight Sciences and Bell received Phase 1B awards in May 2024, and Bell received the Phase 2/3 contract in June 2025. DARPA announced the X-76 designation on March 9, 2026. DARPA’s SPRINT program page
How fast is the X-76 supposed to fly?
The announced objective is cruise above 400 knots. Bell describes a target range of 400 to 450 knots at relevant altitudes; DARPA describes the goal as exceeding 400 knots. These are program goals, not measured speeds achieved by a flying X-76. The announcements provide no independently verified X-76 performance statistics. How is the concept different from a conventional aircraft?
SPRINT is organized around a trade-off: fixed-wing aircraft can cruise quickly but normally need a runway, while helicopters can hover and use more confined landing areas but are not designed around the same high-speed cruise objective. The X-76 is meant to bring those capabilities together: fast cruise, vertical lift and operation from austere or unprepared surfaces. The public information establishes the intended combination, not comparative test results against particular aircraft.
Bell says the demonstrator incorporates “first-of-its-kind stop/fold technology.” The public releases do not explain the complete mechanism or provide a full technical specification, so details such as rotor operation, propulsion architecture, crew, payload, range and intended combat role should not be inferred from that phrase. DARPA’s program gallery identifies related images as artist’s concepts; renderings should not be mistaken for photographs of a completed aircraft.

As of the March 9, 2026 announcement, Bell had completed Critical Design Review and was moving into manufacturing, integration, assembly and ground testing. DARPA planned Phase 3 flight tests for early 2028. That schedule is a plan, not confirmation that testing has occurred; the aircraft was still entering build-phase work at the announced milestone. DARPA’s milestone announcement
Bell’s announcement describes the official X-76 designation as honoring the founding of the United States in 1776. The designation marks the demonstrator; it does not establish that an operational aircraft has been ordered.
What is not yet known?
The official announcements describe objectives, program milestones and a broad design concept, but not a complete aircraft specification or verified flight performance. Future speed, range, payload, operational suitability and the eventual schedule remain unresolved until further development and testing establish them.
