There is no verified, methodologically consistent “top 10” ranking in the available evidence, so naming ten SUVs as the worst would be misleading. For U.S. shoppers evaluating 2023-model-year SUVs, Consumer Reports flags the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, Subaru Ascent, and Hyundai Palisade as less reliable than other cars from the same model year. Those assessments are reasons to investigate a specific vehicle—not proof that every example is a bad buy or that these models belong in a particular order.
What the evidence says about 2023 SUVs
Consumer Reports provides model-year comparisons for six SUVs in the available source set. Its reliability descriptions are not a shared numerical score or a ranked list of the ten least reliable SUVs. The recall counts below are what the Consumer Reports pages reported when accessed on October 8, 2026; counts and records can change.

Each reliability description and page-reported recall count is from Consumer Reports: Tahoe, Ascent, Suburban, Palisade, Traverse, and Equinox. The evidence does not establish comparable repair costs, owner satisfaction, crash-test performance, or total cost of ownership for these models.
Why this is not a defensible top-ten ranking
The available comparisons cover six models, not ten, and do not provide one consistent ranked scale. They support reporting the four below-peer reliability assessments and the two contrasting assessments; they do not establish which SUV is “worst,” how the four compare with one another, or which six additional models belong on a list. An ordered top ten would imply evidence that is not available.

Reliability and recalls also answer different questions. A reliability comparison reflects reported vehicle problems and expectations about future dependability. A recall is a safety campaign addressing a specified defect or risk. A page’s recall count is not a reliability score, and a lower count does not by itself establish better reliability.
How to check a 2023 SUV before buying
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. Its recall tool supports general searches by year, make, and model as well as checks for a specific vehicle by VIN.
- Confirm repair completion. Ask the seller or a dealer whether every recall applicable to that VIN has been repaired, and request documentation where available.
- Review the individual vehicle’s records. Check its maintenance and repair history and arrange an inspection by a qualified mechanic. A model-level reliability description cannot tell you how a particular used SUV was maintained or what condition it is in.
- Match the vehicle to your needs. Consider the configuration and how you intend to use it; the cited comparisons do not settle which SUV is best for a particular buyer.
NHTSA says consumer complaints are considered alongside other data to identify possible safety trends. Complaint totals alone do not establish the chance of failure for an individual vehicle. NHTSA’s 2023 annual report records 94 vehicle recalls affecting 4,271,673 vehicles in calendar year 2023; that is an all-vehicle total, not an SUV-specific figure or a count for any model discussed here.
