Will Tesla Insurance Rates Skyrocket Because of Vandalism?

Tesla has not said vandalism caused its reported California rate increase. Learn what the available figures mean, what can affect your premium, and how to investigate a renewal change.

There’s no evidence that Tesla insurance rates are about to skyrocket because of vandalism. Tesla reports a 12.4% general rate increase approved in California for policies effective on or after August 11, 2025, but it does not attribute that increase to vandalism. A separate report of rising premiums across Tesla’s insurance business measures the insurer’s total premium volume—not how much any individual owner’s rate rose.

What the available figures do—and don’t—show

Figure What it measures What it does not establish
12.4% Tesla says California regulators approved a general Tesla Insurance rate increase for policies effective on or after August 11, 2025. Tesla’s coverage information describes the increase. Tesla does not say vandalism caused the increase, and the figure is not a forecast of every policyholder’s renewal change.
40.7% S&P Global Market Intelligence reports Tesla’s total direct premiums written rose from $970.8 million in 2024 to $1.37 billion in 2025. Its account attributes the growth to a shift toward direct underwriting and substantial growth in California. This is premium volume for Tesla’s insurance business, not a 40.7% rate increase for an individual customer. It does not isolate vandalism as a cause.

Vandalism can lead to an insurance claim, but the available sources do not provide a Tesla-specific vandalism claim count, loss-cost analysis, or rate filing that measures vandalism’s contribution to premiums. It is possible in principle for claims costs to affect future rates; that possibility is not evidence that vandalism has driven a broad Tesla premium surge.

What determines the price of Tesla Insurance?

Tesla says premiums may depend on the vehicle, garaging address, mileage, and the coverage selected. Model, trim, and model year can affect repair costs or the vehicle’s value. In states where Tesla’s Real-Time Insurance product applies, monthly Safety Score and FSD (Supervised) usage may also affect the premium. Tesla describes that product as pricing based on driving behavior: “Your premium is determined by actual driving behaviors, not factors outside of the control of drivers that other insurance providers may use.” That statement is about Real-Time Insurance, not every Tesla policy or state.

Availability and pricing rules vary by state and can change. Tesla says Real-Time Insurance is not available in California, and its California product does not use Safety Score to set the monthly premium. Its Real-Time Insurance explanation and insurance overview provide details; confirm current availability and terms with Tesla before relying on them.

For context, EV insurance can also reflect repair complexity, parts and battery costs, and repair-shop availability, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Those are general EV underwriting considerations, not evidence of a Tesla surcharge tied to vandalism.

How to find out why your renewal increased

  1. Compare the renewal with your current declarations. Check the policy term, premium, coverages, limits, deductibles, and any listed discounts or surcharges.
  2. Check for changes in the risk details. Confirm the garaging address, drivers, vehicle configuration, and annual mileage. If your policy uses telematics, review any applicable score or driving data.
  3. Ask the insurer what changed. Request an explanation of the renewal calculation and whether a filed rate change, a changed risk detail, or a coverage adjustment affected your price. In California, the Department of Insurance explains that premiums are based on filed rates and characteristics of the insured risk in its consumer guide to comparing premiums.
  4. Get comparable quotes. Use the same drivers, garaging ZIP code, vehicle configuration, coverage limits, comprehensive and collision deductibles, optional rental or roadside coverage, and policy dates. Compare claim handling and repair-network arrangements where reliable local information is available; a lower price alone does not show that policies offer the same protection.

Tesla says its app can be used to get a quote, purchase and manage a policy, and submit a claim. Tesla’s listed insurance states include Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia, but availability may change; check Tesla’s current insurance information.

What if your Tesla is vandalized?

Tesla’s claims instructions say a glass-only claim may be filed when vehicle glass is damaged by vandalism. That does not mean every vandalism loss is covered under every policy or that a claim will be worthwhile after the deductible. Check your policy’s coverage and deductible, then follow the insurer’s claims process. Tesla’s instructions are on its claims page.
