Not according to Mazda’s announced plans. The company’s MAZDA ICONIC SP concept and production MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV both use a rotary engine to generate electricity; Mazda has not announced a next rotary model in which the engine mechanically drives the wheels. Its latest statements describe continued rotary development, not a direct-drive vehicle or launch schedule.
What Mazda has actually announced
The distinction is between a rotary engine that generates electricity and one that mechanically turns the wheels. In the first setup, an electric motor provides the drive; the rotary engine supplies electrical power. Mazda has described that generator role for both its rotary concept and its production rotary plug-in hybrid.

Mazda unveiled the MAZDA ICONIC SP on October 25, 2023, as a compact sports-car concept. Its two-rotor rotary engine is used for power generation in an electric-drive system, and Mazda said it could run on carbon-neutral fuel. The announcement did not describe the rotary engine as mechanically driving the wheels or announce the concept for production.

Mazda published a maximum output of 370 PS and an electric-drive range of 200 km for the ICONIC SP. These are specifications for the concept, not confirmed figures for a production car or evidence of a direct-drive system. Mazda’s ICONIC SP announcement
The production example: MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV
Mazda introduced the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV in January 2023 as a plug-in hybrid. Its rotary engine works as a generator alongside the electric motor and generator; Mazda does not describe it as mechanically driving the wheels. The company’s announcement discussed introduction in Japan and Europe at that time, which should not be read as confirmation of current sales availability in either market. Mazda later said mass production of rotary-engine vehicles had resumed in June 2023, about 11 years after RX-8 production ended in 2012. It identified the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV as the model then introduced in Japan and Europe. More rotary-engine development
On February 1, 2024, Mazda reinstated its RE Development Group. The company said the team would continue evolving rotary engines used as generators and research regulatory compliance in major markets and the application of carbon-neutral fuels. Those priorities show continued rotary work, but Mazda did not announce a direct-drive car, production decision or timetable in that release.

Emissions work in the 2025 strategy
In its Multi-Solution Briefing 2025, Mazda said combustion-improvement technologies developed before and during SKYACTIV-Z work would also inform rotary-engine emissions development. Other planned vehicles do not fill in the gap
Mazda’s 2025 strategy says SKYACTIV-Z will be combined with its proprietary hybrid system in the next-generation CX-5 by the end of 2027. It also describes a battery EV using Mazda’s first dedicated EV platform as planned for 2027. Neither announcement identifies a direct-drive rotary vehicle or supplies its launch timing.

A rotary generator can contribute power to an electric-drive system without mechanically turning the wheels. Calling either announced Mazda vehicle a direct-drive rotary would therefore go beyond the architecture Mazda has described. A future direct-drive model remains possible, but it is not confirmed by these announcements.
