No public city source reviewed confirms that Dodge Chargers will replace NYPD cars. NYPD has discussed replacing aging vehicles and requested funding, but that is not an announcement naming the Charger—or any particular replacement model.
Will Dodge Chargers replace NYPD cars?
That claim is not established by the available public record. NYPD’s vehicle information page describes its fleet and equipment without naming the Dodge Charger as a replacement model. The department’s March 2025 City Council testimony addressed vehicle condition and a funding request, not a Charger order. City fleet updates published in April 2026 describe NYPD electric vehicles and a broader law-enforcement electrification effort, but do not announce a Dodge Charger procurement for NYPD.
That distinction matters: a request to replace vehicles is not a purchase award, and a citywide fleet plan is not an NYPD model selection. The evidence reviewed does not rule out a later, unpublished, or not-yet-indexed procurement; it simply does not establish that the Charger has been chosen.

What NYPD told the City Council
At a March 11, 2025 City Council hearing, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kristine Ryan said about 72% of the department’s vehicles were beyond their lifecycle, adding, “which is really not manageable.” That percentage describes NYPD vehicles as presented at the hearing; it is not a count of cars and does not identify what models the department would buy.

Ryan also described a $35,306,000 executive budget request for vehicle replacement. A budget request indicates a funding need, not that the full amount was approved, spent, or tied to a specific vehicle contract. The hearing record does not make it evidence of a Charger order.
What the published fleet information says
NYPD’s public vehicle page lists a fleet of 9,000 vehicles and 115 motorcycles, but does not name the Charger as a replacement. Those are figures from the department’s undated page, accessed in 2026; they are not a current count of cars alone.

What cars is the NYPD getting?
New York City’s Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) reported on April 2, 2026 that NYPD had nearly 500 electric vehicles in its portfolio. That is a department-specific figure. DCAS separately said more than 1,000 electric vehicles were assigned across 15 city law-enforcement agencies, a larger total that should not be attributed to NYPD alone.
Across city law-enforcement agencies, DCAS identified Chevrolet Blazer EVs, Chevrolet Bolts, Ford Mustang Mach-Es, Ford Lightning pickups, Chevrolet Silverado EVs, and Ford E-Transit vans. The announcement does not say that every model belongs to NYPD, nor that these vehicles were competing bids against a Dodge Charger.

Accordingly, the public information does not establish a single new model as the answer to “What cars is the NYPD getting?” It documents a growing electric-vehicle portfolio and examples of models used across agencies, rather than a named Charger replacement program.
Why police vehicle replacement is more than choosing a model
Police vehicles need mission-specific equipment and configuration. DCAS cites examples including shielding, emergency lights and sirens, radio and computer systems, heavy-duty suspension, and partitions. A vehicle’s suitability therefore depends not just on its nameplate or powertrain, but also on whether it can be outfitted for the intended role and supported in service.

For electric vehicles, DCAS also identifies charging access and emergency backup power as continuing challenges. Those operational needs are part of deployment; the existence of EVs in a city portfolio does not by itself establish a replacement schedule for every NYPD vehicle.

NYC’s fleet plans provide useful context, but they are citywide rather than a direct NYPD Charger schedule. DCAS’s April 22, 2026 Clean Fleet Transition Plan announcement projected that 61% of on-road vehicle types would have electric options within three years and 86% within five years, and cited 195 makes and models in the Tier 1 segment. These are market-availability projections, not NYPD purchase commitments.

The City’s Fiscal 2025 Mayor’s Management Report counted 28,768 vehicles in the city fleet at the close of that fiscal year. It also described Local Law 140’s targets: complete electrification of the light- and medium-duty fleet by 2035 and the heavy-duty fleet by 2038, subject to commercial availability and reliability. These citywide figures do not identify which NYPD vehicles will be replaced, when they will be replaced, or whether any will be Dodge Chargers.
What would confirm a Charger replacement?
A definitive answer would require an NYPD or DCAS announcement, solicitation, award, or fleet schedule that names the Dodge Charger and specifies its role. General testimony about aging vehicles, a requested replacement budget, purchases by other agencies, or citywide electrification targets are not substitutes for that evidence.
