Yes, according to Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius in 2024 reporting: the next S-Class line is planned to include both combustion and electric models, with the electric S-Class taking the EQS’s place after the EQS’s first generation. That is a reported product plan, not a current launch announcement. Mercedes-Benz is still updating the EQS for the 2027 model year, and the company’s cited official materials do not set a definitive launch date or specifications for the future electric S-Class.
What Mercedes has said about the electric S-Class
In a report published August 30, 2024, Car and Driver quoted Mercedes-Benz Group CEO Ola Källenius as saying: “There will be two S-classes in the future—ICE and electric.” The report described the electric S-Class as the successor to the EQS name after the EQS’s first generation.
The reported strategy is to bring the electric model into the S-Class family rather than continue the EQS as a separate nameplate indefinitely. It does not mean Mercedes has already discontinued the EQS, nor does it establish that the combustion and electric cars will share a platform.
Is the EQS being discontinued now?
No. Mercedes-Benz USA announced a refreshed 2027 EQS on April 13, 2026, and said it was expected at U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2026. Mercedes-Benz also described the new EQS as supporting its all-electric growth in its Q1 2026 report. The EQS therefore remains part of the current lineup while the company develops its longer-term S-Class strategy.

The announced 2027 EQS 450+ figures are manufacturer WLTP measures, not U.S. EPA range estimates or specifications for a future S-Class EV:
- Mercedes-Benz cites up to 925 km of WLTP range.
- DC fast charging is rated at up to 350 kW.
- The company says up to 320 km of WLTP range can be added in as little as 10 minutes; actual charging depends on conditions.
- More than a quarter of the new EQS’s components are described by Mercedes-Benz as newly developed, updated, or refined.
Mercedes-Benz separately said optional steer-by-wire would be available on the new EQS a few months after launch. That feature is configuration- and market-sensitive; the company described it as the first such offer by a German automaker on a production car.
When could the electric S-Class arrive?
The timing is unsettled. The 2024 Car and Driver report said the future electric and combustion S-Class models were expected around 2030. A shareholder counterproposal included in Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 annual-meeting materials says an all-electric S-Class is not due until 2028. Neither is a definitive current company launch commitment, and the two dates do not amount to a confirmed schedule.
Mercedes-Benz’s official materials cited here do not publish a launch date, price, range, charging rate, or technical specification sheet for the future electric S-Class. Those details should not be inferred from the refreshed EQS.

How the 2026 S-Class update fits in
The 2026 S-Class is a major update to the combustion model, not the announced electric successor to the EQS. Mercedes-Benz says more than 50 percent of the car—around 2,700 components—was newly developed or re-engineered.
The company’s January 29, 2026 press kit says the S-Class, Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, and all-electric EQS are currently produced flexibly on one line at Factory 56 in Sindelfingen. That shared production arrangement is a current manufacturing detail; it does not confirm the future electric S-Class’s platform or production plan.

Is the EQS really a “slow seller”?
“Slow sellers” is the characterization used by the author of a shareholder counterproposal in Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 annual-meeting materials. It refers to the EQS and EQE and their SUV counterparts, but it is not an official Mercedes-Benz sales statement. The sources cited here do not provide a model-specific EQS sales figure that verifies the label, so it is more accurate to attribute the description than to state it as a measured fact.
What remains unknown about the replacement
A useful comparison between the EQS and a future electric S-Class will have to wait until Mercedes publishes specifications for both relevant model years. The comparison should use the same market and range test cycle, and account for charging conditions, dimensions and passenger or cargo space, platform and drivetrain, technology, availability, and price. No future S-Class values for those points are established in the cited materials.
