The KF51 Panther is Rheinmetall’s main battle tank development program, not a tank that the available official record confirms is in operational service. The vehicle Rheinmetall displayed in 2022 was a 130 mm concept demonstrator; the Hungarian Panther KF51 EVO announced in 2023 was specified with a 120 mm gun. Rheinmetall was still reporting further development work in October 2025.
What Rheinmetall showed in 2022
Rheinmetall unveiled the KF51 Panther at Eurosatory on 13 June 2022 as a new main battle tank concept. The displayed concept specified a Rheinmetall 130 mm Future Gun System and an autoloader holding 20 ready rounds. Rheinmetall also described a digital architecture connecting the weapon systems, optics and fire-control computer. These are company-announced design specifications, not independently verified test results. Rheinmetall’s 2022 announcement
How the Hungarian EVO differs
On 15 December 2023, Rheinmetall announced a contract with Hungary to develop the Panther toward production readiness and construct and qualify a demonstrator. The announced contract value was around €288 million; Rheinmetall named Hungarian state-owned holding company N7 as a project partner. Rheinmetall’s contract announcement
The Hungarian Panther KF51 EVO is not simply the 2022 concept with the same gun. Rheinmetall said the EVO would use a 120 mm L55A1 smoothbore gun, aligning with Hungary’s Leopard 2 fleet. The announced turret architecture would allow a later retrofit of the 130 mm gun.

| Configuration | Gun | Purpose and relationship | Status in the cited announcements |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 KF51 concept | 130 mm Rheinmetall Future Gun System; 20 ready rounds in the autoloader, as specified by Rheinmetall | Concept displayed by Rheinmetall at Eurosatory | Concept announcement; the source does not establish operational service |
| Hungarian Panther KF51 EVO | 120 mm L55A1 smoothbore gun, with provision for a later 130 mm retrofit | Development configuration announced for Hungary; the 120 mm gun was described as aligning with its Leopard 2 fleet | Contracted development, including demonstrator construction and qualification |
The 120 mm specification should not be attributed to the 2022 concept, and the 130 mm specification should not be presented as the EVO’s announced starting configuration.
What the development program is intended to do
Rheinmetall described the Hungarian work as taking the Panther toward production maturity. Its 2024 annual report also characterized the program as development to series-production readiness, including construction and qualification of a demonstration product. These descriptions identify intended development work; they do not establish that the demonstrator qualification was completed or that series production began. Rheinmetall 2024 annual report

Current development status
In an update dated 9 October 2025, Rheinmetall said additional engineering capacity at Zalaegerszeg would support further development of both the Lynx KF41 and Panther KF51. The announcement cited 80 additional engineering jobs and €1.4 million in Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency funding for the investment; these figures describe engineering capacity and funding, not tanks produced. The official material cited here supports continued development activity as of that update. It does not establish serial production, delivery to Hungary, or entry into operational service. Nor does it confirm completion of the planned demonstrator work by 7 October 2026.
