No imminent U.S. 4G LTE shutdown affecting cars is established by the carrier information reviewed. AT&T said in its FAQ that it had not announced an LTE turn-down date, while T-Mobile for Business forecast around 2021 that LTE would not be expected to sunset until sometime in the 2030s. That forecast is not a binding schedule. The vehicle-service disruptions already documented are mainly tied to 3G retirements or automakers ending particular connected services—not a current, universal LTE shutdown.
Those changes can still matter: an affected car may lose its embedded emergency call, crash notification, tracking, or app-based remote functions. The car itself is not necessarily “bricked,” and features such as Bluetooth or built-in navigation may continue. What happens depends on the exact vehicle hardware and service.
What a cellular shutdown can—and cannot—do to a car
A car’s cellular connection usually supports telematics: services such as an embedded SOS button, automatic collision notification, stolen-vehicle location, roadside assistance, or commands from a phone app. If the modem can no longer connect, the affected connected functions may stop working.
That does not automatically disable the car’s engine, driving controls, or every infotainment feature. Mercedes-Benz says navigation, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM were outside its mbrace service and were not affected by the cited service changes; Toyota says built-in navigation continued after certain 3G services ended. These examples do not guarantee that every model works the same way, so check the automaker’s notice for your vehicle.

Three different events are often confused
- Network retirement: a carrier stops operating a network generation, such as 3G.
- Hardware incompatibility: a vehicle’s telematics unit cannot use a surviving network, or relies on a retired network for part of its connection.
- Connected-service termination: an automaker or provider ends a platform or subscription even though the cellular network remains available.
Mercedes-Benz’s mbrace termination, effective January 1, 2026, is an example of the third event—not proof of an LTE network shutdown.
Why 3G shutdowns affected some cars that had LTE capability
“LTE-capable” does not always mean a device can connect independently of 3G. AT&T’s 3G device impact brief described a subset of 4G LTE modules that requested 3G voice services to activate data-only service and lacked Voice over LTE (VoLTE). Those devices could lose service when 3G was retired, despite having some LTE capability. This is a compatibility issue caused by a 3G shutdown, not evidence that LTE itself is now being shut down.

AT&T said its 3G network was shutting down in February 2022. In a separate FAQ, AT&T stated that it had not announced a 4G LTE turn-down date. T-Mobile for Business forecast around 2021 that LTE would not be expected to sunset until sometime in the 2030s; that is a forecast, not a confirmed industry-wide deadline. Neither statement establishes a universal date for every carrier or vehicle.
Examples of vehicle services that ended
Automaker notices show why owners should check the exact model and service rather than infer what will happen from the model year alone.

| Vehicle or service | What the notice says ended | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz factory telematics, model years 2000–2016 and select 2017 models | Mercedes-Benz says these vehicles relied on 3G modules. Potentially affected services included automatic collision notification, emergency and roadside calls, stolen-vehicle tracking, remote services, and MB Apps. The company says navigation, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM were not mbrace services and would not be affected. | This is historical 3G-retirement guidance. It does not mean every Mercedes-Benz in those model years lost every listed feature; check the vehicle and service details. |
| Mercedes-Benz mbrace, affected active subscriptions in 2017 and certain 2018 vehicles | mbrace ended January 1, 2026. The notice lists Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance, and SOS/Emergency Call among the discontinued services for affected subscriptions. Some 2018 GLE and C-Class vehicles with Digital Extras option code 1P5 are not affected. | This was a service-platform termination, separate from a carrier LTE shutdown. The notice’s equipment and subscription exceptions matter. |
| Tesla Model S built before June 2015 without an LTE-capable modem | Tesla says features listed in its support guidance required Wi-Fi unless the vehicle received an LTE modem upgrade or Infotainment Upgrade after AT&T’s 3G retirement. An in-car LTE indicator identifies vehicles the page describes as unaffected. | The example concerns a particular build population and the end of 3G, not the end of LTE. |
| Selected Toyota models, model years 2010–2018 | Toyota discontinued specified Safety Connect and Entune App Suite services on November 1, 2022 because of 3G shutdowns. Named losses included Automatic Collision Notification, the Emergency Assistance button, and Stolen Vehicle Locator. Certain Prius Plug-in, RAV4 EV, and Mirai app features, including Remote Climate and Vehicle Finder, also ended. | Toyota says there are no retrofit options to restore the affected services, while built-in navigation continues to work. |
| 2015 and 2016 Kia Soul EV | Kia’s U.S. notice says Kia Connect services ended December 31, 2022 following Verizon’s 3G retirement. The discontinued set included 911 Connect, roadside assistance, and stolen-vehicle recovery. | This notice applies to the selected Soul EV years and services; it should not be generalized to all Kia vehicles. |
How to check whether your car is affected
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record its model year, production date, market or country, trim, and installed options. Model year alone may not identify the telematics hardware.
- Find the named connected service. Check the automaker’s current model-specific or VIN-specific guidance and identify the service name—such as Safety Connect, mbrace, or Kia Connect—rather than relying on a general “3G” or “LTE” label.
- Ask which functions are affected. Get a clear list covering SOS/emergency calling, automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, stolen-vehicle tracking, app controls, and any other feature you use. Confirm whether the issue is network compatibility, a discontinued platform, or an expired subscription.
- Ask about an approved retrofit. Confirm whether the automaker offers one for your exact hardware and what services it restores. Toyota’s cited notice, for example, says no retrofit is available for its affected services; options differ by automaker and vehicle.
- Check whether the service is active now. Do not rely on an embedded SOS button as your only emergency plan until the automaker or service provider confirms that it is currently supported for your vehicle.
Can an upgrade or an aftermarket tracker restore the features?
Possibly, but only when the automaker supports a compatible retrofit for that specific vehicle. Tesla’s guidance describes an LTE modem upgrade or Infotainment Upgrade for the affected pre-June 2015 Model S population. That example is not a general upgrade path for other makes or models.
Mercedes-Benz’s historical 3G guidance names Verizon Hum, an OBD cellular device, as an alternative for some functions such as vehicle tracking. That does not establish that the product is currently available, nor that an OBD tracker restores factory SOS, automatic crash notification, or all manufacturer-specific remote controls. Treat aftermarket tracking as a limited substitute unless the device maker confirms the exact function and vehicle compatibility.

Which features may still work without the car’s cellular service?
Some functions rely on a phone connection or local vehicle hardware rather than the embedded telematics connection. The Mercedes-Benz notices say navigation, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM were not affected by the specified mbrace changes; Toyota says built-in navigation continued after the named 3G services ended. Your vehicle’s manual and service notice are the best guides to what remains available in your particular configuration.
Phone navigation may also remain usable through the phone itself, but that is distinct from the vehicle’s embedded emergency and remote services. Check any feature you depend on individually rather than assuming that all connectivity—or none of it—will survive.
