The Wild Land Safari Cruiser is a pickup-bed topper that electrically raises an upper tent while leaving usable space beneath it. Packed down, it sits around cab height; raised, it creates a two-level camp. That unusual layout could suit buyers who want a lower driving profile than a permanently elevated rooftop tent, but the reported 550-pound weight, limited lower headroom, manual bed extensions and uncertain current availability make vehicle fit and seller support essential questions.
How the Safari Cruiser works
New Atlas described the Safari Cruiser on February 1, 2024 as a bed-rail-mounted pickup topper combined with a rack and rooftop tent. An electrically actuated double-lift raises the upper sleeping area above the truck bed. The maker’s concept is to retain a relatively low profile on the road, then use the bed as a sheltered lower-level area at camp.
In the reported setup, a battery pack mounted at the bed wall powers the lift, which the user operates with a keychain remote. An interior ladder connects the bed to the upper tent. The design also includes a panoramic mesh panel, a clear skylight hatch and a wraparound awning system that can be outfitted with an annex tent. What the two-level layout offers—and what it costs in space
A low profile while driving
The appeal is the combination of a topper-like packed height and an elevated sleeping platform when parked. That may be attractive to a driver who wants to avoid keeping a permanently raised tent on the truck. The reported account does not give a precise packed height or quantify aerodynamic, fuel-use or handling effects, so “around cab height” should be treated as a general description rather than a vehicle-specific measurement.

A separate sleeping level
When raised, the upper area becomes the sleeping space, while the pickup bed remains below. The upper platform’s reported 87 × 55 in dimensions are achieved only after manually unfolding its front and rear floor extensions. Buyers should account for that extra setup step rather than assuming the powered lift alone makes the bed ready to use.
Limited standing room below
The lower space is reported to have approximately 59 in of height over most of the bed. That is not enough for most adults to stand upright, so it is better understood as covered storage or a low sheltered area than as a conventional walk-in camper interior. New Atlas also noted that the rear apparently is not fully enclosed; the report does not establish the degree of weather protection in different conditions.

Tradeoffs to check before considering one
- Payload and fit: At the reported 550 lb, the camper would use a substantial share of a truck’s available payload before occupants, cargo and other accessories are counted. Confirm the specific truck’s payload, bed-rail compatibility and any installation constraints with the manufacturer or an authorized seller.
- Roof loading: The reported crossbar limit is up to 66 lb. Verify how that limit applies to the exact configuration and whether any intended roof cargo is compatible.
- Setup effort: The lift is powered, but the upper floor extensions must be unfolded manually, and the report describes an interior ladder between levels.
- Wind exposure: New Atlas raised concern about the tall, broad sides being less suitable in windy weather. This is a reported concern, not a field-test result; ask the seller for operating guidance and do not assume the report establishes a safe wind limit.
- Enclosure: The lower area’s modest headroom and apparently open rear may not meet expectations for a fully enclosed camper. Inspect the actual configuration and weather-sealing details before purchase.
Availability and price: the 2024 figures are not a current offer
New Atlas reported that Wild Land had launched the Safari Cruiser in China, was seeking distributors and planned to show it in the United States at the 2024 Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. The same article estimated a US$10,000 base retail price and warned that the figure could change by launch. That is historical 2024 reporting—not a current quote, confirmation of a U.S. launch, or proof that the camper can be bought in any particular market today. The report does not establish a current seller, warranty, delivery timeline or present price.
Before making a buying decision, request a current written quote and confirmation of local availability, warranty coverage, installation support and truck-specific fit from Wild Land or an authorized seller. Confirm the current specifications as well, particularly weight, payload implications, roof loading and the bed-rail mounting requirements.

Who the Safari Cruiser may suit
The concept may interest pickup owners who value a low packed profile but want a raised sleeping area and a distinct lower bed space at camp. It is a less obvious fit for anyone who needs to stand comfortably inside, expects a fully enclosed rear living area, wants minimal setup, or cannot spare substantial payload. Whether it is a practical alternative to a conventional topper or rooftop tent depends on those priorities—and on verified compatibility and current local support, neither of which the 2024 report settles.
