A charger’s advertised kilowatts are its maximum capability, not a promise that every car will receive that power throughout a charging session. Your EV has its own charging limit, and battery charge level and temperature, station condition, and shared site power can all reduce the rate further.
What the charger’s advertised kW actually means
The station rating describes the maximum output it can offer under applicable conditions. The power your car accepts at a given moment—often shown on the vehicle or charger screen as session power—may be lower. The U.S. Department of Transportation explains that charging speed depends on the vehicle and charging equipment, while the U.S. EPA notes that the vehicle’s charging capability is a limiting factor (DOT: Charger Types and Speeds; EPA: Plug-in Electric Vehicle Charging: The Details).
For example, an EV with a 50 kW maximum DC acceptance rate will not charge at 150 kW simply because that is the station’s rating. A higher-rated charger can still be useful for a different vehicle or a future charging session, but it does not raise this car’s limit. Chevrolet describes this as the vehicle’s acceptance rate: it can be below the station’s maximum available power, and the vehicle may receive the station’s full output only briefly to protect its battery (Chevrolet: DC Fast Charging Station Rates).
AC and DC ratings are not interchangeable
First establish whether you are using AC charging or DC fast charging. With AC, the vehicle’s onboard charger limits how quickly power can be converted for the battery. A high AC station rating cannot override that onboard limit. For DC fast charging, compare the station’s output with the EV’s documented maximum DC acceptance rate. Consult the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s charging guidance for the specific model and charging type.

Why the rate changes during a session
Battery charge level and charging taper
As the battery fills, the vehicle generally reduces charging power. This taper protects the battery and means that a station’s peak rating is not an expected rate for the entire session. Chevrolet says the reduction is significant around 80% state of charge, but that is a manufacturer reference, not a universal cutoff: the shape and timing of the curve vary by vehicle and battery management system (Chevrolet: How to Charge EV at Public Charging Station).
Starting charge can matter too. Some vehicles may not reach their best rate from a very low or high state of charge. Note both the starting percentage and when the rate falls; compare those observations with the model-specific charging curve rather than assuming every drop indicates a fault.

Battery temperature and preconditioning
Fast charging is generally strongest when the battery is within its suitable temperature range. A cold or otherwise non-ideal battery can prompt the vehicle to limit power. Chevrolet’s guidance says DC fast charging is fastest in moderate temperatures and at lower battery charge levels. If your vehicle offers DC fast-charge preconditioning, use its navigation-based or manual procedure as described in the owner’s instructions; availability and effect are model-specific. Recent driving and ambient conditions can also shape the battery’s temperature (Shell USA: Shell App EV FAQs).
Station limits and power sharing
A station may be unable to provide its full rated output because of equipment condition, installation or grid constraints, or power distribution among dispensers and vehicles. Some charging sites dynamically share available power, so another connected vehicle—or a site-reported limitation—can affect your session. The exact behavior depends on the equipment and site (DOT: Charger Types and Speeds; BMW via NHTSA: BEV – Reasons For No/Slow DC Charging Complaint, October 2023).

Displayed power, battery energy, and charging time
The power shown during charging is not identical to the energy ultimately stored in the battery. Thermal management and charging losses use some of the delivered energy, and cabin climate control can draw power or affect how long charging takes. IONITY explains that these factors can contribute to a difference between station-indicated power and energy going to the battery (IONITY Support: Why did my car charge less than the station indicated?).
How to check a slower-than-expected session
- Match the charging type and limits. Confirm whether the station is AC or DC, then check its rating, connector compatibility, and your vehicle’s documented limit for that charging type. A high station rating alone does not establish what the car can accept.
- Record the charge level and timing. Note the battery percentage when you plug in and when the power drops. A decline as the battery fills is commonly expected; interpret the approximate 80% reference in light of your vehicle’s own charging curve.
- Consider temperature and preconditioning. Think about whether the battery may be cold or otherwise outside its preferred range, and whether the car supports and completed fast-charge preconditioning. Follow the model-specific instructions rather than assuming preconditioning is available or will resolve every slow session.
- Check the site and neighboring stalls. Look for a station fault or reported limitation and see whether another vehicle is connected to equipment that may share power. If the site offers another suitable dispenser, a comparison there may help distinguish a station-specific issue.
- Compare at another suitable charger if the result still seems unusual. A low rate at a low-to-mid charge level and suitable battery temperature warrants a comparison at a different compatible station. BMW’s 2024 charging-time guidance also identifies using a known-good DC charger as a way to investigate suspected app or network configuration (BMW via NHTSA: Charging. Charging Times., 2024).
If rates remain unexpectedly low across suitable stations and conditions, consult the vehicle maker or a qualified service provider. One session alone is not enough to diagnose battery degradation or a vehicle fault.

Compare charging options by more than peak kW
When choosing between two real charging options, consider the factors that shape the session together:
- Available output and compatibility: the station’s usable output and connector must suit the vehicle.
- Vehicle acceptance: the car’s maximum for AC or DC charging sets its own ceiling.
- Battery conditions: starting charge and expected battery temperature affect the rate the car may accept.
- Site constraints: shared dispensers or limited site power can make nominal ratings a poor guide to current output.
- Your purpose: a brief road-trip stop and routine home charging have different priorities; a public DC peak is not a measure of home AC performance.
There is no broadly applicable statistic establishing how often EV drivers receive less than a charger’s advertised peak. The useful benchmark is your own vehicle’s documented capability and charging curve, interpreted alongside the conditions of the session.
