A car heated blanket that will not turn on may not be faulty: the vehicle outlet could be unpowered, the plug may not be making contact, or a fuse or model-specific safety feature may have interrupted operation. Start with the checks below, in order. Do not use a wet or damaged blanket, cord, or plug, and do not open the blanket to repair its heating wires.
1. Check whether the vehicle outlet has power
Some 12V outlets work only when the ignition is in the accessory position; others behave differently. Check your vehicle owner’s manual for the outlet’s operating conditions. For example, the Kmart manual for its keycode 43235681 travel blanket notes that the ignition may need to be in accessory mode. The Schumacher 1222U manual says to use that blanket while the vehicle is running. These are model-specific instructions, not universal rules for every car or blanket. If the outlet still seems dead, check whether another suitable device works in it, following the vehicle manual and without exceeding the outlet’s limits. If the outlet itself does not work, use the vehicle manual to identify its fuse and the correct replacement rating; do not guess or install a higher-rated fuse.
2. Unplug and reseat the blanket plug
With the blanket disconnected, look for dirt, corrosion, looseness, melting, or other damage on the vehicle outlet and blanket plug. Reinsert the plug fully so it makes firm contact. The Schumacher and Kmart manuals both direct users to check the connection and outlet condition. Do not clean the adapter with a metal tool, and do not use a plug, outlet, or cord that is damaged. 3. Check the blanket plug’s fuse, if replaceable
Some blanket plugs have a user-replaceable fuse. Disconnect the blanket before checking it, and follow the instructions for your exact model. Replace a blown fuse only with the same type and rating specified by the blanket maker. The ratings below illustrate why there is no safe universal fuse value:

4. Check the vehicle fuse for the outlet
The vehicle outlet has its own circuit protection, separate from any fuse in the blanket plug. Use the vehicle owner’s manual to locate the correct fuse and identify its required rating. Blanket instructions can recommend checking the vehicle fuse panel, but cannot establish the fuse location or rating for every vehicle. Replace a vehicle fuse only with the specified type and rating; if it blows again, stop using the outlet and seek qualified automotive help rather than fitting a larger fuse. The KickAss manual also directs users to check the vehicle fuse panel if the controller LEDs do not light. KickAss manual.
5. Check for a model-specific protection condition
Lay the blanket fully open and flat, and check its controller indicators against the product manual. Folding or bunching can trigger protection on some designs: Schumacher warns that using its 1222U folded or scrunched can overheat it and trip its internal circuit breaker. KickAss says to check that its blanket is completely unfolded if all three controller lights keep flashing. Indicator meanings and reset procedures differ by model, so allow the blanket to cool and use only the reset steps in its own manual. Schumacher 1222U manual; KickAss manual.

6. Stop if the blanket, plug, or cord is damaged
Do not use a wet blanket or one with damaged fabric, wiring, plug, or cord. Do not cut into the blanket or attempt to repair its internal heating wires. The KickAss manual limits user servicing to fuse replacement; if the prescribed checks do not restore operation, contact the manufacturer or take the unit out of service. If the outlet works, the plug is seated and undamaged, the applicable fuses are correct, and the blanket is laid out as instructed—but it remains unresponsive—stop troubleshooting and consult the manufacturer. A recurring blown fuse or a vehicle outlet that remains dead needs attention at the vehicle circuit, not an improvised blanket repair. If replacing the unit, confirm its input voltage (12V or 24V), connector and outlet fit, fuse specification, controller behavior, and care instructions are compatible with your vehicle and intended use.
