That combination—not a proven lap time or production-car test result—is what makes the reveal a striking performance story. The GR GT remains under development, and Toyota’s published output, torque and launch timing are targets rather than final specifications.
What Toyota revealed
Toyota GAZOO Racing and Lexus unveiled the GR GT, GR GT3 and Lexus LFA Concept on December 5, 2025. The GR GT is the road-legal sports car and new GR flagship; the GR GT3 is a separate race car being developed from it for customer competition. The LFA Concept is a battery-electric sports-car concept, not a confirmed production model. Toyota’s global announcement presents the three vehicles as part of a broader effort to carry performance-car engineering skills into a new generation.
The reveal’s scale is notable: Toyota is not simply previewing a powerful road car. It is developing that car alongside a customer racer, with the road model’s architecture and engineering linked to competition use. Toyota also frames the project as a successor in spirit to the Toyota 2000GT and Lexus LFA. That is a heritage positioning, not a claim that the GR GT reproduces either car.
Is the GR GT a hybrid, and what are its performance targets?
Yes. Toyota specifies a newly developed 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 paired with a single electric motor. The GR GT has a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a rear-mounted transaxle. Toyota’s global technical description lists an eight-speed automatic transmission, mechanical limited-slip differential and dry-sump lubrication for the V8. Toyota’s announcement describes the arrangement, while the Toyota Europe release supplies the headline development targets.

- Brand new box. Authentic detail. Real rubber tires. Detailed wheel design. Detailed under-chassis. Detailed interior, exterior. Comes in a blister pack. Officially licensed product. Die-cast metal body and chassis. Dimensions approximately L-2.75 inches long.
Toyota Europe gives target maximum system output of at least 650 DIN hp (641 bhp/478 kW) and target maximum system torque of at least 850 Nm. These are prototype development targets published in 2025, not independently tested results or certified final production figures. The “at least” wording is part of Toyota’s stated target, not evidence of a measured minimum in a production car.
What makes the engineering approach unusual?
A low, rigid platform
Toyota identifies three engineering priorities for the GR GT: a low centre of gravity, low weight with high rigidity, and aerodynamic performance. The chassis uses the company’s first all-aluminium body frame, with carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic and other materials used for body panels. These are design and construction details announced during development; Toyota has not yet published final curb weight or certified production specifications in the cited releases.

Aerodynamics before styling
Toyota says the exterior process began with an ideal aerodynamic form. Designers and aerodynamic engineers then worked together to shape the body while supporting cooling needs. This reverses the familiar impression that a finished styling theme is simply refined for airflow: Toyota describes aero goals as an early constraint on the shape itself. The Toyota UK GR GT page also emphasizes this aerodynamic-first narrative.
How is the GR GT different from the GR GT3?
| Vehicle | Intended use | What Toyota has disclosed |
|---|---|---|
| GR GT | Road-legal GR flagship | Hybrid V8, front-engine and rear-wheel drive, with a rear transaxle; development is ongoing. Toyota Europe’s 2025 release gives target launch timing around 2027 and target system output of at least 650 DIN hp (641 bhp/478 kW) and torque of at least 850 Nm. |
| GR GT3 | Customer racing under FIA GT3 regulations | A separate race car based on the GR GT project. Toyota says it is preparing customer support for international GT3 competition; Toyota Europe’s 2025 release gives target launch timing around 2027. |
The pair share development and a V8 engine family, but they are not two trims of one car. The GR GT is intended for road use; the GR GT3 is designed for regulated competition and customer racing. Toyota has not provided final race-car performance figures in the cited material. The launch timing and road-car targets in the table are Toyota’s development aims, not confirmed production-market specifications.

Why the project carries more than a performance message
Toyota describes the programme as “Toyota’s Shikinen Sengu,” using the idea of preserving and passing on expertise to explain how experienced car builders teach the next generation. The company says veterans involved in developing the Lexus LFA passed skills and techniques to younger members. The announcement also names Chairman Akio Toyoda, known as Master Driver Morizo, professional drivers, a gentleman driver, in-house evaluation drivers and engineers as participants in development.
This makes the GR GT more than a new flagship in Toyota’s telling: it is also a way to retain hands-on sports-car and motorsport knowledge. Toyota places it in the lineage of the 2000GT and LFA, while the related GT3 programme gives that knowledge a direct competition application. Those are Toyota’s stated intentions and framing; they do not establish how the finished cars will perform.

When will the Toyota GR GT go on sale?
There is no confirmed retail on-sale date, price, final specification or market-by-market availability in the cited announcements. Toyota Europe’s December 5, 2025 release says development is ongoing and targets launches around 2027 for both the GR GT and GR GT3. Treat “around 2027” as a development target, not a guaranteed delivery date. The GR GT is therefore not yet a production-market purchase on the information Toyota has published.
Why it stands out among 2025 performance reveals
The GR GT is a compelling surprise because Toyota’s announcement combines a hybrid V8 road car, a purpose-built GT3 sibling and a stated plan to pass sports-car engineering skills between generations. The company’s positioning of the GR GT as a “circuit-ready, everyday driver” is promotional language, not an independent road or track assessment. No tested performance figures or driving impressions are established by the cited official materials.
