The Toyota Hilux is not sold new in the United States because Toyota serves that market with the Tacoma, while tariffs on imported trucks and differences in U.S. buyer expectations make a separate North American-built pickup a more competitive fit. The Hilux was sold in America decades ago, and it is not categorically banned—but importing a newer one involves federal safety-compliance rules.
Was the Toyota Hilux ever sold in the U.S.?
Yes. Toyota’s own history dates the Hilux’s U.S. introduction to June 1969. Its later absence is not because it was never offered in America. Toyota’s corporate timeline also records a U.S. truck-bed assembly agreement with Atlas Fabricators beginning in 1972.

Those milestones concern the Hilux’s historical U.S. presence. They do not mean that the current Hilux sold in other markets is the same vehicle as the truck Toyota sold here decades ago. Toyota’s Hilux milestones and its North America company history provide the historical record.

Why isn’t the Hilux sold new in the U.S.?
The available evidence points to a combination of trade costs and market strategy, not one publicly confirmed explanation from Toyota. The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) described both the tariff disadvantage for imported light trucks and the differences between U.S. truck demand and other markets.

The tariff can make imported pickups less competitive
In a 2018 report, the USITC said that the 25 percent tariff on imports of vehicles for the transport of goods “likely plays a significant role in reducing the competitiveness of light trucks produced outside of North America.” That is the commission’s assessment of the tariff’s commercial effect, not a statement that Toyota named it as the sole reason for its product strategy.
The report describes Toyota’s shift from a “global” pickup: it produced the Tacoma for the U.S. market and Hiluxes in Thailand for other markets. A truck built outside North America can therefore face a substantial tariff disadvantage when competing in the United States. The cited rate and analysis are from 2018; they should not be treated as confirmation of the current tariff schedule or the duty that would apply to a particular import. See the USITC’s 2018 report.

Toyota serves U.S. buyers with a market-specific pickup
The USITC also found that U.S. light trucks tend to be larger and more expensive than trucks sold in other markets. It noted that foreign manufacturers supplying the U.S. often design a truck specifically for this market and build it in North America. That market analysis helps explain why a manufacturer might offer a different model here rather than import its global pickup.

Hilux and Tacoma: different market roles, not interchangeable trucks
The USITC’s comparison is about where the trucks serve and how market conditions shape that strategy. It does not establish that today’s Hilux and Tacoma are equal or different in reliability, capability, fuel economy, or safety performance.
| Question | Hilux | Tacoma |
|---|---|---|
| Market role described by the USITC | Produced in Thailand for markets outside the U.S. (USITC, 2018) | Produced for the U.S. market after Toyota introduced it (USITC, 2018) |
| Exposure to the cited tariff analysis | A light truck built outside North America could face the 25 percent tariff on goods-transport vehicles discussed in the USITC’s 2018 report; check the current tariff schedule for a specific case. | The report describes Tacoma as Toyota’s U.S.-market pickup; the cited passage does not state a Tacoma tariff rate. |
| U.S. market fit | The cited sources do not give current Hilux size, price, or feature comparisons. | The USITC says U.S. light trucks tend to be larger and more expensive than those in other markets, and describes Toyota’s Tacoma as the truck for the U.S. |
Toyota announced a $32,145 starting MSRP for the 2026 Tacoma, before delivery and handling fees, and identified the model as using its TNGA-F platform. That is a manufacturer-announced model-year price, not a current transaction price or a like-for-like comparison with a Hilux. Details are in Toyota’s 2026 Tacoma announcement.

Is the Toyota Hilux banned in the United States?
No. “Banned” is too broad. Federal rules generally require a vehicle less than 25 years old to comply with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and carry the original manufacturer’s certification before it can be imported for unrestricted use. A nonconforming vehicle may be permanently imported only through NHTSA’s eligibility and modification process. Registration and licensing are separate state-level matters.
These rules concern whether a particular vehicle meets U.S. import requirements; they do not show that every Hilux is illegal to bring into the country. Nor do the cited sources establish that current Hilux emissions compliance is the decisive reason Toyota does not sell the model new in the U.S. Consult NHTSA’s Importation and Certification FAQs and interpretation 09-001270as for the federal framework.

Can you import a Toyota Hilux into the U.S.?
Possibly, but the answer depends on the specific vehicle’s age, certification, and eligibility—not just its model name. Before arranging a purchase or shipment, establish whether it is already certified to applicable U.S. standards or whether it would need to qualify for NHTSA’s nonconforming-vehicle process. That process is not a blanket permission to import any Hilux, and federal import compliance does not guarantee state registration.
Quick Recap
- For a newer, nonconforming truck: Check NHTSA’s eligibility and modification requirements before importing. Do not assume that a seller’s assurance or a vehicle’s road legality in another country makes it eligible in the U.S.
- For a vehicle at least 25 years old: NHTSA’s general under-25-year compliance rule has an age threshold, but import and state registration questions still need to be checked for the individual vehicle.
- For any specific import: Verify the applicable federal requirements with NHTSA and check registration and licensing rules with the relevant state. Separately verify the tariff and other import costs for the vehicle and circumstances; the USITC’s 2018 tariff finding is not a current vehicle-specific duty determination.
