2019 marked two milestones with different starting points: 50 years since Heuer launched the Monaco watch in 1969, and 90 years since the first Monaco Grand Prix in 1929. The anniversaries share a motorsport setting, but they commemorate separate histories—not 90 annual editions of the race.
Why did both anniversaries fall in 2019?
| Milestone | Starting point | 2019 anniversary |
|---|---|---|
| Heuer Monaco watch | Launched in 1969 | 50 years |
| Monaco Grand Prix | First race held in 1929 | 90 years elapsed since the inaugural race |
The dates mark a watch launch and a race’s beginning. The Grand Prix figure is elapsed time from 1929 to 2019, not a count of annual editions.
What made the original Heuer Monaco different?
TAG Heuer’s official magazine dates the original watch’s release to March 3, 1969, in Geneva. The brand describes it as the first water-resistant square-faced automatic chronograph. Its unconventional design stood apart from the round, light-dial watches common at the time.
- A square case with a metallic blue dial and domed glass
- A red central seconds hand
- A crown positioned on the left side of the case
- Calibre 11, an automatic chronograph movement
The left-side crown was a visible cue to the automatic movement: unlike a manually wound watch, it did not need the same routine winding. The Monaco’s shape and dial made it recognizable, while Calibre 11 gave it a distinct mechanical identity. TAG Heuer’s official history and its official magazine account describe the launch and design.
How did Monaco become a motorsport name?
The name was part of a wider naming approach. The Automobile Club de Monaco says Jack Heuer’s interest in racing instruments in the late 1950s inspired him to name watches after races, including Monza, Silverstone, Montreal and Monaco. The watch’s identity therefore connected it to motorsport from its inception.
Its best-known screen appearance came later: TAG Heuer’s magazine recounts that Steve McQueen chose a Heuer Monaco for his character in the 1971 film Le Mans. That association should not be confused with the Monaco Grand Prix; the film is set around a different race.

What happened at the first Monaco Grand Prix?
The Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) traces the race’s origins to a challenge facing the club, founded in 1890. Its competitions took place outside Monaco, making it harder to gain recognition. The club’s General Commissioner, Antony Noghès, conceived a race through Monaco’s streets. Prince Pierre inaugurated the circuit on April 14, 1929, ahead of the first Grand Prix.
The ACM’s official history says: “Just six months later, on April 14, 1929, Prince Pierre inaugurated the circuit ahead of the 1st Monaco Grand Prix, performing a lap of honour in a Voisin Torpedo driven by Race Director Charles Faroux.”

In the ACM’s account, 16 cars started the inaugural race. “Williams” won in a green Bugatti 35B after 100 laps, in 3 hours, 56 minutes and 11 seconds, at an average speed of 80.194 kph. These figures describe the first race; they are not a measure of later editions. The ACM’s history page gives the event’s origins and these race details.
How did TAG Heuer mark the watch’s 50th anniversary?
TAG Heuer’s official history says the brand released five limited-edition Monaco models in 2019, each drawing on a different decade of the watch’s story. The editions used distinct color schemes rather than presenting a single anniversary design:

How did the relationship continue after 2019?
In May 2020, the ACM announced TAG Heuer as official sponsor and timekeeper of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, and reported that the brand introduced a special Monaco watch for the event. This was a later continuation of the watch’s connection to Monaco motorsport, not part of the 2019 anniversaries. The ACM announcement is dated May 8, 2020.
