Why the Suzuki Carry Appeals to Some U.S. Farm and Property Owners

The Suzuki Carry’s compact bed and some four-wheel-drive configurations suit certain property jobs, but U.S. import, registration and farm-use rules depend on the individual truck and where it will be used.

The Suzuki Carry’s appeal is practical: it is a compact Japanese-market kei truck with a pickup bed, and some configurations offer four-wheel drive. That can make it handy for moving tools and supplies around a property where a larger pickup feels cumbersome. But “farm-friendly” does not mean every Carry is suited to every task, or automatically legal on public roads in the United States.

What makes the Suzuki Carry useful around a farm?

The Carry belongs to Japan’s kei-truck category. Tire Rack describes kei trucks as compact vehicles with a genuine pickup bed and lists the Carry alongside the Honda Acty, Daihatsu Hijet, Subaru Sambar, and Mitsubishi Minicab; some examples have four-wheel drive. Those traits can suit bounded jobs such as carrying tools, supplies, or materials across a property.

That usefulness has limits. The available information does not establish one payload, set of dimensions, engine specification, or fuel-economy figure for all Carry generations. Before judging whether a particular truck can handle a job, get records for its exact year and chassis, and check its condition and drivetrain configuration. A compact bed and available four-wheel drive do not make it a substitute for every full-size pickup.

Why do some Americans want kei trucks?

Reporting and retailer coverage point to practical appeal, not a measured national market. Tire Rack describes kei trucks as having work and agricultural uses and says hobbyist interest has increased. In a 2024 Associated Press report, a Texas brewery owner said, “You just can’t get an affordable pickup truck here in Texas,” and, “And this kei truck fits most everything we need.” AP also described interest in places such as Nantucket, where some residents see kei trucks as an alternative to larger vehicles.

Those examples show why a small truck may appeal to some buyers; they do not establish a U.S. Suzuki Carry sales or ownership total. No authoritative figure for nationwide Carry ownership, sales, or popularity is available in the cited sources.

Can I import a Suzuki Carry to the USA?

Federal eligibility depends on the specific vehicle. NHTSA says a motor vehicle at least 25 years old may be imported without regard to whether it meets all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). The 25-year period runs from the vehicle’s manufacture date, not simply the model-year label.

HLSFWDRIVE RC Kei Truck WPL D14 RC Car Drift Off Road 4WD Suzuki RTR
  • 【New Release WPL RC】1/10 Scale RC car WPL D14 2024 release, licensed by Suzuki features a highly detailed and realistic design, just like the real Kei truck. It has a newly revised chassis, upgraded to four-wheel drive over the WPL D12. The front suspension is independent with adjustable ride height, camber, caster, and toes. The rear suspension is a leaf spring with a solid axle. A massive steering angle helps a big turning radius.
  • 【New Features】It also has lots of other improvements. The new lower arms reduce the chance of hitting the ground, the new steering knuckle with double ball bearing, new engine cover, front open diff and rear full lock, front IFS rear solid axle, 280 brushed motor, and front-mounted 17g digital servo, new D receiver with light functions, revised stall protection less interruption, the Kei truck RC is now less jumpy over uneven terrain.
  • 【Improved Performance】It is marketed more as a drift truck with a large steering angle and speed drift ability. Because of the four-wheel drive upgrade, it handles some off-roading better than the earlier WPL RC car, allowing the WPL D14 to handle various terrains, including off-road conditions, with ease. This system ensures all four wheels receive power, improving control and performance.
  • 【Proportional Throttle Steering】This remote control Kei truck has dual rate adjustable for both throttle and steering and is capable of speed drift and 45° for easy climbing with anti-vibration chassis, powerful brushed 280 motors, large angle steering, and front-mounted 17g servo. The remote control car is equipped with proportional throttle and steering and offers precise control over speed and direction.
  • 【RC Car 4WD RTR】This is an RTR version RC Car 4x4 with a remote, battery, and charger. Just plug and play out of the box! A younger vehicle that was not built and certified to U.S. standards generally cannot be permanently imported unless NHTSA determines it eligible. NHTSA makes that determination by make, model, and model year; nonconforming vehicles generally must be brought in through a registered importer or someone contracted with one. Check the truck’s age documentation, import declarations, and applicable EPA requirements before buying or shipping it. See NHTSA’s Importation and Certification FAQs and EPA’s vehicle and engine import guidance.

Are kei trucks street legal?

There is no nationwide yes-or-no answer for an individual Carry. Federal permission to import a vehicle and permission to register or drive it on public roads are separate questions. NHTSA notes that registration and licensing are generally governed by state law; check the current rules with the DMV or equivalent authority in the state where you intend to use the truck before purchase.

A 2024 AP report described differing state approaches, including highway-use restrictions and a Massachusetts registration controversy. That reporting is a dated illustration of policy variation, not a statement of today’s requirements in any particular state. Confirm the rules directly with your state motor-vehicle agency, including whether the vehicle can be titled, registered, insured, and used on the roads you have in mind.

Can I use a kei truck on my farm?

“Farm use” is not a blanket federal exemption for an ordinary road-capable imported Carry. In a 2009 interpretation, NHTSA discussed a narrow category of non-certified mini-trucks treated as outside its motor-vehicle safety standards jurisdiction when they were used solely off-road and had a maximum speed of 25 mph. The agency cited farms and closed sites as examples, while cautioning: “Because these vehicles are not manufactured to meet U.S. safety standards, NHTSA cannot endorse their use on public highways.” The interpretation does not establish that every Carry qualifies.

EPA also describes a specific nonroad mini-truck category in its guidance: small trucks or vans with spark-ignition engines below 1,000 cubic centimeters, maximum power below 30 kilowatts, and a governed maximum speed no higher than 25 miles per hour. EPA says unique certification requirements apply before importation. These criteria describe a constrained regulatory category, not a rule that can be assumed to cover every Carry generation or use. Review NHTSA’s 2009 mini-truck interpretation and EPA’s import guidance, then confirm the requirements for the specific vehicle and intended use.

What should I check before buying a Carry?

  • Identity and age: Match the chassis and manufacture-date records to the truck. Do not rely on a model-year label alone for the federal 25-year import threshold.
  • Import pathway: Verify the applicable NHTSA route and EPA requirements, and make sure the import documentation matches the vehicle.
  • Registration and use: Ask your state motor-vehicle agency about title, registration, and road-use rules before committing to a purchase. For off-road farm use, establish that the specific truck meets the relevant requirements and will actually be used within the permitted scope.
  • Work requirements: Get vehicle-specific information for payload, dimensions, engine, and drivetrain, then compare it with the loads and terrain on your property.
  • Condition and parts: Inspect the truck and check the availability of parts for its particular year and chassis. Do not assume specifications or parts interchange across generations.

What size tires does a kei truck use?

145/80R12 is a commonly encountered kei-truck tire size, according to Tire Rack, but it is not a guaranteed fit for every Suzuki Carry. Before ordering, verify the truck’s own tire specification, wheel dimensions, and required load rating. Prior modifications and differences in year or configuration can affect fitment. Tire Rack’s kei-truck tire guide provides category context, but the individual vehicle’s specifications should determine what you buy.
