That is a personal preference, not a claim that it is the best electric car for everyone. It also needs a qualification: “Cooper SE” refers to different generations and markets, with very different published range and charging figures.
What makes the Cooper SE my favorite?
The appeal is the combination of small-car scale and an electric powertrain in a car with a strong visual identity. For drivers who value a vehicle that feels suited to crowded streets and tight parking, that compactness can matter more than having the longest possible trip between charges. The case for the MINI is about the character of the package, not a universal ranking of EVs.
Independent coverage has described the newer Cooper SE as agile and entertaining, while also noting that range, charging pace and small-car practicality can limit its appeal on long journeys. Those are reviewers’ assessments, not my personal test impressions. WIRED’s review provides that outside perspective.
Which Cooper SE are we talking about?
The name alone does not identify one set of specifications. The original US Cooper SE and the newer Cooper SE described in BMW Group’s European-market materials differ in performance, range and charging details. The figures below are not directly interchangeable: they use different markets, units and range-testing contexts.

The original US figures come from MINI USA’s 2020 announcement; its 110-mile figure was explicitly preliminary. The newer specifications are from BMW Group’s overview of the new MINI family and its technical specifications valid from November 2023. The 402 km figure is a WLTP result, not a US EPA estimate, and these sources do not establish that the newer version is offered in the United States.
What is the range and charging time?
There is no single answer without the model generation and market. For the original US Cooper SE, MINI USA announced a preliminary 110-mile EPA range and DC fast charging up to 50 kW. The announcement also described charging from a 120-volt household outlet, a wall-mounted charger or public charging equipment, but the cited material does not provide a universal charging-time figure for those options.

For the newer Cooper SE, BMW Group lists a 402 km WLTP range. WLTP is a different testing cycle from EPA, so that figure should not be read as an equivalent US range or compared directly with the original model’s preliminary EPA estimate. The cited newer-generation technical figures do not state a charging rate or charging time.

It may suit a driver whose regular journeys fit comfortably within the range of the specific version they are considering, who can charge conveniently, and who prizes an engaging compact car over long-distance flexibility. It is a less obvious fit for frequent long trips, where limited range in some versions and charging pace can mean more planning, or for buyers who need more passenger or cargo room than a small car offers.

- Consider it if: compact dimensions, distinctive styling and lively character are high on your list, and your normal routine works with the car’s market-specific range.
- Look closely at alternatives if: you often travel long distances, need substantial cargo or rear-seat space, or cannot charge where the car is usually parked.
- Before deciding: confirm the exact model year and market, check the official range and charging specifications for that version, and match them to your driving and charging routine.
Price and current availability depend on region and date; the sources cited here do not establish either. This is a preference-led case for the Cooper SE, not a current-market buying recommendation or a claim that it outranks other EVs on a like-for-like comparison.
