Mazda has not confirmed a production RX-9. Its Iconic SP and RX-VISION are concepts, not announcements of a model, launch date, price, or production specification. Still, the Iconic SP gives enthusiasts a concrete reason to watch: Mazda has shown how a modern rotary sports car might work, with a two-rotor engine generating electricity in a rotary EV system. Whether that idea becomes a road car remains unknown.
Has Mazda confirmed the RX-9?
No. Mazda’s official materials identify the Iconic SP and RX-VISION as concepts; they do not confirm a production RX-9, its approval, release date, price, specifications, or availability. The RX-9 is therefore a possibility enthusiasts may hope for—not a car buyers can count on.
The distinction matters because Mazda has explored rotary sports-car ideas before. A striking concept can show design direction and technical ambition, but it is not evidence that the company will put that vehicle into production. The 2015 RX-VISION release, for example, described a rotary sports-car concept and said mass production of rotary engines was then on hold while research continued. Mazda’s RX-VISION announcement was not a production commitment.
What is the Mazda Iconic SP?
Unveiled at Japan Mobility Show 2023 on October 25, the MAZDA ICONIC SP is a compact sports-car concept. Mazda’s proposal pairs a two-rotor rotary engine with an electric-drive system: the engine generates electricity rather than serving as a conventional direct-drive powerplant. Mazda says the system’s batteries can also be charged using renewable energy.

Mazda says the rotary engine can use varied fuels, including hydrogen, and describes carbon-neutral fuel and renewable electricity as conditions for driving the concept in a virtually carbon-neutral state. Those are Mazda’s conditional descriptions, not independently verified lifecycle-emissions results.
Iconic SP concept specifications
| Published figure | What it describes |
|---|---|
| 370 PS | Mazda’s stated maximum output for the Iconic SP concept |
| 1,450 kg | Mazda’s stated weight for the Iconic SP concept |
| 4,180 × 1,850 × 1,150 mm | Concept length × width × height |
| 2,590 mm | Concept wheelbase |
Mazda also describes a roughly 50:50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity as design aims. These details make the concept more than a styling sketch, but none should be treated as a specification for a future RX-9. Mazda’s 2023 Iconic SP release and its U.S. Iconic SP page, dated October 21, 2024, both present it as a concept.

Why a new rotary sports car has appeal
The rotary has a distinctive place in Mazda’s sports-car story. Mazda’s history records the Cosmo Sport—sold overseas as the 110S—as the world’s first volume-production sports car powered by a two-rotor rotary engine. It launched on May 30, 1967. Mazda lists period specifications of 491 cc × 2 capacity, 110 PS maximum power, a 185 km/h top speed, and 16.3 seconds over 400 metres.
That heritage helps explain the emotional pull of another rotary-powered sports car: it would connect a recognizable part of Mazda’s past with a new approach to electrification. But history is context, not a promise. The Iconic SP’s proposed rotary EV arrangement is an intriguing concept, not proof that Mazda will revive the rotary for a production sports car. Mazda’s corporate history documents the Cosmo Sport’s place in that lineage.

Is the Iconic SP likely to become the RX-9?
The available official information does not establish that the Iconic SP will be produced or renamed RX-9. It also does not settle whether a future rotary sports car would share the concept’s design, powertrain, output, weight, or dimensions. The concept is meaningful evidence that Mazda has presented a rotary sports-car vision; it is not a forecast buyers can use to plan around a confirmed vehicle.
Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro said at the 2023 unveiling, “Mazda will always deliver vehicles that remind people that cars are pure joy and an indispensable part of their lives.” That expresses a broad company philosophy, not a commitment to build the Iconic SP or an RX-9.

Should you wait for an RX-9 or buy a Mazda sports car now?
If you need a car on a real timetable, buy based on vehicles Mazda actually offers in your market. Waiting for the RX-9 means accepting uncertainty about whether it will exist, when it might arrive, what it might cost, and what form it might take. There is no confirmed RX-9 price or specification to compare with a production car.
Mazda’s June 26, 2026 announcement covers updated Roadster and Roadster RF models in Japan—not an RX-9. Mazda said reservations opened that day and expected sales to begin in early September 2026. The Roadster is a current Mazda sports-car option for buyers who do not want to wait, but it is not an RX-9 substitute in engineering or body style. Availability and pricing vary by market.

Japan-market Roadster prices in Mazda’s 2026 announcement
| Model | Japan-market price listed by Mazda |
|---|---|
| Roadster | ¥2,959,000–¥4,070,000 |
| Roadster RF | ¥3,850,000–¥4,697,000 |
These are prices Mazda listed for Japan in its June 26, 2026 release, not U.S. prices or a guide to pricing elsewhere. The same release describes a PS special edition and equipment including RAYS 16-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, and Bilstein dampers. Mazda also reported more than 1.26 million cumulative Roadster sales; its release footnote says the production total is based on Mazda’s own research. Check your local Mazda market for current model availability and pricing. Mazda’s Japan-market Roadster announcement has the release details.
What would make waiting worthwhile?
Waiting makes sense as an enthusiast’s choice if you enjoy following Mazda’s rotary-car development and do not need a replacement vehicle by a particular date. The Iconic SP offers a specific concept worth watching: compact sports-car proportions and a rotary engine used as an electricity generator. The appeal is real even while the production question remains open.
If you are making a purchase decision, treat any RX-9 timing, price, performance, or specification claim as unconfirmed unless Mazda announces it officially. The soundest choice is to compare cars you can actually buy with your own needs—not to assign a presumed value to a hypothetical model.
