The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe’s advertised 56 MPGe is not 56 miles per gallon from its gas tank. MPGe measures energy use in electric operation; the label separately gives gasoline MPG for driving after the battery is depleted. Confusing those figures—or comparing a label estimate with a different model year, route, or charging pattern—is a common reason the numbers seem not to match.
What the 4xe’s advertised fuel-economy numbers mean
A plug-in hybrid has two distinct fuel-economy figures because it can use electricity and gasoline in different ways. The EPA’s PHEV label explainer describes the electricity figure as MPGe, or miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent. It is an energy comparison, not gasoline consumption. EPA uses 33.7 kWh as the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline and includes charging losses in MPGe; its accounting assumes Level 2 AC charging. See EPA’s fuel economy and EV range testing explanation.

The label’s gasoline MPG figure is different: EPA says it reflects fuel economy when the battery is emptied and the vehicle is using gasoline. That is the relevant label figure for charge-depleted driving, rather than the MPGe figure.

| Example and source | Electricity figure | Gasoline-only figure | Range or test context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe listing, ENERGY STAR/fueleconomy.gov | 56 MPGe combined | 23 MPG combined | 26 miles city and 26 miles highway electric range |
| 2025 model-year FCA US LLC EPA/DOT label, fueleconomy.gov | 56 MPGe | 23 MPG gasoline-only | 0–25 miles all-electric range, as shown on the label |
| Consumer Reports 2024 road-test report, Consumer Reports | Not stated | 21 mpg overall after electric power was depleted | One road-test result; the available report excerpt does not state further test conditions |
These are figures from different model years and sources, not competing promises for every 4xe. The Consumer Reports figure is one test result, not a forecast for every owner or a replacement for the EPA label rating.

Why your real-world result can differ
How often you charge changes the energy mix
The MPGe rating is most useful when the vehicle is regularly plugged in and using electric energy. If you make a long trip after usable battery charge is depleted, gasoline MPG is the more relevant measure. A trip with both electric and gasoline driving may combine both energy sources, so a single dashboard number may not be directly comparable to either label figure.
Trips do not reproduce EPA test conditions
EPA ratings are standardized estimates, not guarantees for individual trips. Manufacturers submit fuel-economy data using prescribed procedures, and EPA confirms approximately 15% of test results. The procedures generally use five cycles: city and highway tests without HVAC, a more aggressive high-speed cycle, a 95°F test with cooling, and a 20°F test with heat and defrost. Results are combined and weighted to estimate average use. EPA identifies driving behavior, maintenance, air conditioning and other accessories, weather, road conditions, and vehicle load as factors that can change actual fuel economy.

- [Vehicle Compatibility]: Only compatible with American car brands produced after 2008 as shown in the product image, and Japanese cars and European car brands produced after 2005 (not compatible with all pure electric vehicles)
- [Important]: (Not all car brands support reading oil temperature and transmission temperature and pressure data), a few car brands can display these data using custom PIDs with the assistance of our engineers. Please keep in mind that due to the variation of car brands and production dates, we cannot guarantee that all vehicles can be successfully upgraded
- [Working Principle]: The obd2 meter is connected to the car's 16-pin OBD2 interface via the OBD2 line, and can monitor in real time (water temperature, boost pressure, fuel consumption, speed and other car ECU data). The displayed data is related to the corresponding sensor. Without the corresponding sensor, no data can be read
- [Visual/auditory alarm]: When important ECU data such as water temperature, turbo pressure, exhaust temperature, etc. exceed dangerous values, the driver will be reminded through pop-up windows and sound alarms to prevent greater damage to the vehicle. It also has common fault code clearing and reminder functions
- [Ultimate Customization]:You can upgrade the instrument program, customize different display data combinations, display the data you want on various work interfaces, change the display color, and even personalize your car logo
The engine can run even when the vehicle is in Electric mode
Jeep’s 2024 Grand Cherokee 4xe Hybrid Supplement says the engine can propel the vehicle, provide cabin heat, power electrical loads, or charge the high-voltage battery. It also says a heavily depressed accelerator or power request beyond the electric drivetrain’s limits causes the engine to run. Sustained high-speed driving in Electric mode can be less efficient than engine use. Engine activation on its own therefore does not establish that something is wrong.
Charging may take longer than expected
The same Jeep supplement estimates approximately 12–13 hours for Level 1 (120 V) charging and 2–3 hours for Level 2 (240 V) charging. These are estimates, not fixed guarantees: actual time depends on state of charge, EVSE, ambient and battery temperature, available current, and thermal protection. Charge schedules can also delay charging. EPA’s label comparison time assumes 240 V; it should not be treated as a promise for every outlet or condition.

How to check an unexpectedly low reading
- Identify the metric. Check whether the number is gasoline MPG, MPGe, electric range, or a combined energy-use reading. Do not treat MPGe and gasoline MPG as interchangeable.
- Note the starting charge state. Record whether the battery began charged, whether the vehicle was plugged in regularly, and whether the trip continued after usable electric power was depleted.
- Compare like with like. Track a series of comparable trips and note route, trip length, city/highway mix, speed, weather, HVAC use, and vehicle load. Reset or record the trip metric consistently so unlike journeys are not being compared.
- Check charging settings and conditions. Review charge schedules and the owner information for your model year. Account for outlet or EVSE type, available current, and temperature when judging whether charging completed as expected.
- Seek vehicle-specific diagnosis if the concern persists. If readings remain unexpectedly low under comparable conditions, consult the vehicle-specific owner information and an authorized dealer. A low reading alone does not prove a defect; diagnosis depends on the vehicle’s circumstances and service status.
How to compare 4xe fuel-economy claims fairly
Before comparing an owner report, road test, or another model year’s label, establish the model year and trim, starting charge and charging frequency, whether the figure is gasoline MPG or MPGe, the route and conditions, and whether the number comes from an EPA label, a road test, or an owner’s log. Do not average MPGe and MPG together without an explicit energy-use calculation. The figures above are U.S.-specific examples and do not establish results for every year, trim, climate, or driving pattern.
