Toshiba’s TX4964FG was an automotive display system-on-chip introduced in 2007 for instrument clusters and rear-view camera displays. It combined a CPU, graphics hardware, TFT-LCD control, camera input and 4 MB of embedded DRAM in one device, with the aim of reducing the external chips, board area and system complexity needed to build an in-car display.
What is Toshiba’s automotive display SoC?
The TX4964FG was designed to drive and manage small TFT-LCD panels in medium- to high-end vehicles. Electronic Design reported on July 5, 2007 that Toshiba positioned it for applications ranging from backup-camera displays to full-size, reconfigurable instrument clusters. The intended display range was typically three to five inches, at resolutions up to VGA.

It was not simply a video-interface converter: the TX4964FG combined computing and display functions that would otherwise require several separate ICs. Toshiba’s stated integration replaced four ICs, consolidating a processor, graphics controller, dedicated accelerator functions, peripherals and interfaces.

- CPU: A 64-bit, MIPS-based Toshiba TX49/L4 core running at 120 MHz.
- Graphics hardware: A hardware graphics engine supporting up to 32-bit RGBA color, plus an accelerator for display output and anti-aliasing.
- TFT-LCD panel controller: The display-control function for the target automotive panels.
- Camera input: A digital-camera interface and frame grabber able to handle multiple input formats, including rear-view monitoring use.
- Memory: 4 MB of embedded DRAM for the frame buffer, avoiding the need for external RAM ICs.
- Package: A 176-pin QFP.
Integrating frame-buffer memory and display functions could reduce board area and system-level power by eliminating external components. The design addressed a practical engineering trade-off: a cluster or rear-view display needs graphics and video handling, but using separate processing, memory and display-control chips increases component count and design complexity.

These are the specifications stated in the 2007 coverage; they describe the TX4964FG as introduced, not a statement about current production or availability.
How does it compare with Toshiba’s later automotive display-interface chips?
Toshiba later announced automotive infotainment (IVI) bridge ICs. They address a different problem from the TX4964FG: translating video between display and processor interfaces rather than integrating a CPU, graphics engine and frame buffer for a cluster-style display.
