For the 2025 model year, the Honda Africa Twin remains a credible adventure motorcycle (ADV) choice because one 1,083cc platform comes in two clearly different configurations, and each is available with either a six-speed manual or an automatic dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The standard Africa Twin is built for off-pavement work. The Adventure Sports ES is built for longer road days. That split lets a buyer match the bike to the riding they actually do without leaving the Africa Twin lineup.
This is a fit-based case, not a ranking of the class. The figures below come from Honda’s own 2025 U.S. materials, and the article explains why those features matter to different riders. Honda’s 2026 brochure keeps the same standard-versus-Adventure-Sports structure, so the logic carries past 2025, but the specifications discussed here are the 2025 ones.
What the 2025 range includes
Honda’s 2025 U.S. lineup had four Africa Twin variants: the Africa Twin, the Africa Twin DCT, the Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES, and the Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT. All four share the same engine, a 1,083cc liquid-cooled Unicam parallel twin with a 92.0 x 81.5 mm bore and stroke and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. The manual versions use a six-speed manual gearbox, and the DCT versions use a six-speed automatic dual-clutch unit. Standard versus Adventure Sports ES
The configuration choice matters more than the engine choice. The two trims use the same powerplant but differ in wheel size, suspension, fuel capacity, seat height, and fairing. The table uses Honda’s 2025 U.S. figures.

Standard Africa Twin: geometry for off-pavement riding
Honda describes the standard model as the slimmer, more maneuverable, off-road-oriented configuration. The 21-inch front wheel, longer suspension travel, and 9.8-inch ground clearance all point in the same direction: rolling over rough ground and clearing obstacles. The trade-off is a 5.0-gallon tank, which means more frequent fuel stops on long routes, and a seat that sits higher than the Adventure Sports ES.

Adventure Sports ES: longer road days and wind protection
The Adventure Sports ES moves the balance toward touring. The 19-inch front wheel, electronic Showa EERA suspension, 6.6-gallon tank, and lower seat height are all aimed at longer distances on paved or mixed roads. Honda says the fairing is designed to improve wind protection. The trade-offs run the other way: the bike is heavier in manual form, and its shorter front travel and smaller front wheel give up some of the standard model’s off-road reach.
Manual or DCT
The transmission choice is a separate decision from the trim. The manual keeps conventional clutch and gear control. The DCT shifts automatically but still allows manual intervention. Honda’s explanation is that the DCT can let riders concentrate on line selection and throttle control off road, which is a rationale from the manufacturer rather than an independent test result.

Honda also reports that approximately half of Africa Twin customers choose the DCT versions. That figure is from Honda’s 2025 features release and refers to global customers. Neither transmission is the better choice for every rider. The article does not claim a performance or reliability advantage for either gearbox.

Which configuration fits which rider
- Off-road-first riding: the standard Africa Twin, for its 21-inch front wheel, longer travel, and higher ground clearance.
- Long paved or mixed-road distances: the Adventure Sports ES, for its larger tank, lower seat, fairing, and electronic suspension.
- Preference for conventional control: a manual version of either trim.
- Preference for automatic shifting with manual override: a DCT version of either trim.
Fit and the low-seat option
Honda’s 2025 features material describes tool-free high and low seat adjustment and identifies an accessory Low Seat for the Africa Twin. The low positions in the table are the starting point for a rider who needs a lower saddle. Confirm that a given accessory is listed for your model year and trim with a Honda dealer or authorized parts retailer before buying, because compatibility is not established by the product concept alone.
