General Motors discontinued the GMC TopKick in 2009 as it wound down its medium-duty truck business, which also included the Chevrolet Kodiak. GM had spent years exploring a sale of the operation, but a proposed deal with Navistar fell through. The available contemporary sources document that business context; they do not establish one exclusive reason for the decision.
What the GMC TopKick was built to do
The TopKick was a medium-duty commercial truck, not a conventional consumer pickup. It shared GM’s medium-duty line with the Chevrolet Kodiak and was designed to accommodate vocational bodies and equipment for business and public-service work.
GM’s 2009 fleet guide describes C4500 and C5500 TopKicks in several wheelbases and regular- or crew-cab configurations, with gasoline or diesel engines and standard Allison six-speed transmissions. Listed applications included wreckers, snow plows, fire and rescue vehicles, ambulances, shuttles and school buses. The guide’s figures are specific to that period, not current specifications:
- The C4500 was listed with gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) options up to 17,500 lb; the C5500 was listed up to 26,000 lb.
- Listed engines included a Vortec 8.1L V8 rated at 325 hp and 450 lb-ft, and Duramax 6.6L V8 diesel versions rated at 300 hp and 520 lb-ft or 330 hp and 620 lb-ft.
GM’s 2009 fleet guide is a model-year brochure, so its specifications should not be applied to every TopKick year or configuration.

Why GM stopped making the TopKick
GM announced in June 2009 that it would wind down its medium-duty truck operations after working with multiple potential buyers for four years, according to Commercial Carrier Journal’s report. The company said production of the Kodiak and TopKick at its Flint facility would cease by July 31, 2009. A reproduced GM announcement likewise stated that production would cease by that date, as reported by Contractor Magazine.
The unsuccessful effort to sell the business is part of the documented explanation. In December 2007, Navistar tentatively agreed to acquire GM’s medium-duty truck business, including certain assets and manufacturing rights. In August 2008, the companies said they would not renew their memorandum of understanding, citing “significant marketplace and economic changes.” GM said it would continue the medium-duty business while reviewing strategic options, according to Commercial Carrier Journal’s account of the deal’s end.

By the time GM announced the wind-down, the automaker was in its bankruptcy-era restructuring. Taken together, the sources show the failed sale effort and the broader restructuring as context for the decision. They do not support reducing it to a single proven cause, such as bankruptcy alone, or assigning a specific financial or market-performance explanation.
How the wind-down affected orders and support
GM said it would fill sold orders through the end of July 2009 and continue incentives and warranty programs during the phase-out. In August 2009, trade reporting quoted GM’s medium-duty leadership as promising parts, service and support for trucks already sold; see Commercial Carrier Journal’s report on support commitments. Those were assurances made at the time. They do not establish present-day parts inventory, service coverage or availability at every dealer.

GM’s announced production deadline at Flint was July 31, 2009, for both the GMC TopKick and Chevrolet Kodiak. That date refers to the planned end of production at the facility, not necessarily the date every dealer’s inventory was exhausted or the model-year label on a particular truck.
