The fourth-generation BMW M3 Coupe, known as the E92, has a persuasive claim to “best M car ever” status: it combines the compact M3 coupe formula with the first V8 fitted to a series-production M3. Its naturally aspirated 4.0-liter S65 rewards revs, while adjustable vehicle settings let drivers tailor the car’s responses. That makes it a distinctive M car—not an objectively proven winner over every other generation.
What makes the E92 the V8 M3?
BMW’s fourth-generation M3 family included three body styles: the E92 Coupe, E90 Sedan and E93 Convertible. The E92 is the coupe version, and its S65B40 was the first V8 installed in a series-production M3, according to BMW’s March 2007 technical brief and BMW M’s retrospective.
The engine’s character is central to the car’s appeal. It is a 3,999 cc naturally aspirated V8 designed to deliver its performance high in the rev range, rather than relying on turbocharging. That gives the E92 a particular place in M3 history: it retained the model’s performance-coupe role while adopting a larger, higher-revving engine than the earlier four- and six-cylinder M3s. BMW’s sources establish the E92’s specifications and design, but do not provide a comparative study proving it is superior to every M generation.
What are the V8’s power figures?
BMW published different power figures for different markets and conventions. Keep them distinct rather than combining them:

The differing horsepower and engine-speed figures reflect what the respective BMW materials specify for their markets and conventions; they are not one blended specification. The US launch release also describes the chassis as “faster than its engine”—a vivid expression of BMW’s engineering intent, not an independent comparative test result.
Why does the engine feel distinctive?
High-revving, naturally aspirated delivery
The S65’s 8,300-rpm peak-power figure in BMW’s US launch material, paired with its 8,400-rpm redline, captures the engine’s high-revving brief. BMW’s global technical brief lists a maximum engine speed of 8,300 rpm. These are source-specific figures, so the market and publication should stay attached to them.

Individual throttle butterflies and variable valve timing
BMW’s technical description identifies eight individual throttle butterflies and double-VANOS variable camshaft control. The eight throttles provide a separate intake path for each cylinder; double-VANOS varies camshaft timing to help manage engine response across operating conditions. BMW also describes ion-flow engine control and an oil supply designed for dynamic driving in its 4th Generation M3 Complete Vehicle technical training manual. These are engineering details that explain the V8’s character and design brief; they do not, by themselves, establish an objective ranking against other M cars.
How does the car give the driver control?
BMW documented driver-adjustable dynamic settings for the M3 Coupe, including settings affecting engine response, damping, stability control and steering. The point is not simply that the car has selectable modes: it is that the driver can change how several systems respond rather than accept one fixed calibration. The available manual and dual-clutch transmissions also offered different ways to interact with the powertrain, a distinction that comes down to preference rather than a universal best choice. BMW’s 2007 North American debut announcement describes the configurable features.

What does the E92’s lightweight design add?
For the M3 Coupe, BMW said its carbon-fiber roof reduced weight by 44 lb compared with the optional steel roof with moonroof. That comparison applies to those specific roof configurations; it is not a claim about every E92’s weight or a measured performance advantage. It does show how the coupe’s technical brief included attention to weight as well as engine output.
How does it fit the M3’s history?
BMW traces the original M3 to a road-going homologation car for entry into the German Touring Car Championship. The company says the model’s popularity helped it evolve toward a mix of driving dynamics, comfort and luxury. In that lineage, the E92 is a compelling turning point: an M3 still presented as a usable performance coupe, but with a V8 that gave this generation a distinct mechanical identity. BMW’s historical account provides context, not proof that every generation should be judged by the original homologation mission.

BMW’s 2007 launch materials described the first V8 in a series-production M3 as a defining step for the Coupe and Sedan. The broader generation also included the E93 Convertible, giving buyers different body-style priorities within the same M3 family. The E92’s strongest historical case is therefore specific: it paired a high-revving V8 with the established M3 coupe format, rather than representing the only valid interpretation of what an M car should be.

That depends on what “best” means. If the deciding qualities are a naturally aspirated V8, high-revving character, configurable driver controls and a distinctive position in M3 history, the E92 has an unusually strong case. If the answer requires a universal ranking across all M cars, the available BMW specifications and historical material cannot establish one. “Best” remains an enthusiast judgment, and other drivers may value different engines, body styles, generations or forms of performance.
